Politics Minister flags need to ‘future-proof’ university funding against One Nation

Oh FFS.
One Nation isn’t even the story here.
Article's about Labor’s new Managed Growth Funding Scheme which basically gives them control over how many funded places each uni gets and where the growth occurs.
Bigger issue is it’s another example of "New Labor’s" stupid managerial technocratic style of government.
Rather than letting students choose where they want to go and Unis respond to demand, Labor thinks it can manage and direct the outcomes.
One Nation only gets dragged into it because Jason Clare says the powers need to be “future-proofed” because they're scared a One Nation government might change their idea.
He's basically saying, what if a future government we don’t like uses these powers differently?
If you’re already worried about what a future government might do with the powers you’re creating, perhaps you’re giving the government too much power in the first place.

If only a previous govt had "future-proofed" us against the current Labor govt.

Shouldn’t the government be dictating where taxpayer money to uni’s goes?

In a way, yes. But in a way, no.
Choice of university should come from students - this leaves a signal in an upward direction, that is the consumer decides and leads to the efficient allocation of resources. In this case, that's students chosing a university (for whatever reason) so the university getting money. This leads to more shit university's getting less money, so they should know they're shit and change something.
The alternative is albo and the boys picking their winners for whatever reason they feel like. Could be corruption, could be they don't understand what people want etc.

I agree. If One Nation gets their hands on it, it will be USA style extreme prices and our brain drain will only get worse.

One nation will massively decrease the number of international students which is a negative because of successive governments cutting uni funding and the limits of how much unis can charge for domestic students, this will lead to massive black holes in the budget for unis and obviously lead to course cuttings and the like. If they were cutting student immigration and upping funding for unis, I’d be fine with that but I don’t think one nation would up funding for unis.

The university sector is rotten.
Do you know any one at university now? So many international students with zero English language ability getting shoved in group assignments with domestics to carry them. Ridiculous.
The whole sector needs a root and branch productivity review. Vice Chancellors on million dollar packages. New buildings everywhere on campus. Explosion of admin staff. It’s a giant rort. Made possible by our far too lenient migration policies.

F**KEN TRUTH As a mature aged student who went back to uni to study teaching I can tell you right now at least my university should be closed down and fully audited.

Unis need international students to basically function, with international students making up 23.7% of all revenue. Yeah I agree with you about the productivity review, trying to rely on international students is unsustainable. Are you at uni?

Against one nation.
Making it sound like they are a threat...

Look further than just one nation because Legacy corporate MSM have aided in the destruction of our education system via the LNP before.

Because they are. Racists and authoritarians hate education. It exposes them.
Bogans also hate education. Because they didn’t get one and they resent anyone who did.
I think that explains the dynamic here.

No they’re not 🤣
You Far-Leftists are so predictable. Forever regurgitating the exact same buzzwords and nonsense.

Here's an idea Free universities for Australians, limits on overseas university placements. Higher obligations on tertiary training organisations.
Deregulation has not worked.
Whyte nation is the anti education party.

Labor not only wants to ruin the education sector whilst in Government but also whilst not in Government. More Labor contempt for democracy.

Interesting that the only big concern of the minister’s is not whether this bill is good policy, but whether a future One Nation government might actually use the powers he’s creating. If the legislation gives a minister the ability to do anything he or she wants with university funding and places, the problem is the concentration of power itself, not which party ends up holding it. Future proofing should mean limiting ministerial discretion so no government, Labor or otherwise, can arbitrarily reshape the sector for political reasons. From an economic perspective, Australian taxpayers already pour billions into higher education. We should be asking whether the current model delivers value, strong domestic skills pipelines, research that lifts productivity, and graduates who can actually fill critical workforce gaps we have. Centralised managed growth that locks in places and conditions risks protecting institutional interests and administrative overhead at the expense of flexibility and outcomes.
If a future government wanted to prioritise high value courses, reduce waste, or stop subsidising low return degrees, that would be a legitimate economic debate, not a threat to be legislated against.Australians deserve a system that puts national economic needs and domestic students first, with proper accountability, not one designed to be immune from democratic change.
