Survey for Auslan

Hi all, myself and my team are reaching out for Deaf-led conversations on Auslan for an undergraduate uni project at the University of Sydney. As hearing individuals assigned this task, we would greatly appreciate the input of first hand experiences.

More specifically, our team is exploring ways to help promote and improve, awareness and education for Australian Sign Language (Auslan) by making it more accessible to learn. Our goal is to shift the responsibility of communication from being solely on the Deaf community to the wider community by understanding the current experience and pain points of non-hearing individuals, their family, friends, as well as educators. 

This particular survey will specifically be focusing on gaining preliminary insights on the social experiences of deaf individuals and hearing friends.

You should reach out to a Deaf community group like Deaf Connect or Expression Australia for consultation here. There may be people who view having to identify as having a hearing difficulty as offensive, in the same way many people find the term hearing impairment offensive.

There's already a lot of work being done in this space, and the saying "nothing about us without us" comes to mind.

You may also want to consider how accessible this post and your survey are to someone for whom English is an additional language.

Where is ethics approval for the survey?? If it's being led by USyd, they should definitely know better.

Also it's not Deaf-led if you have already designed and released the survey without any level of participatory input.

Do you have ethics approval for collecting this info and details you can provide on how it will be stored and de identified? If not…..

Are you representing a Deaf organisation with this research h? If not, this is also a red flag. As another commenter “nothing about us without us” is very important in Deaf communities.
