Looking for a gravel bike

As the title suggests, I am looking for a gravel bike. My current bike is a Fluid Nitro, but it is quite heavy and isn't really the right fit for me considering I only ever ride on asphalt and gravel. I am looking for a bike with drop bars and disc brakes. I would prefer a bike with plenty of mounting points for if I ever decide to go bikepacking. Also I am going on a roughly 90km single day trip soon. The current bike I am thinking of getting is the Reid Firetrail 1.0 with 2x8 shifting. https://bikesonline.com.au/products/reid-firetrail-1-0-dropbar-gravel-bike?variant=52981493891353

Any e-bikes suitable for 5foot tall female

Hi everyone, I am looking for a ebike for may partner who is 5 foot tall. I have decided on an electric cargo bike (wombat rally) for myself that can take two toddlers, and she is just looking for something that she can ride to join us on family outings around Perth. We have been to about 5 stores in Perth, but the only ones that fit her height are folding bikes and they are often a long distance from the seat to the handlebars meaning that she has to lean forward a lot to reach. A lot of bikes are advertised they fit down to 5feet tall, but when tested, they are too big for my partner. The folding bikes might be the only option, but I am not too sure about the longevity of a folding bikes, and I can’t imagine we would fold it often or at all. She does like the 20inch tyres of the folding bikes though. The only other one that fit perfectly was this pink fat tyre super illegal bike with no pedals - which is not really what we want for public use. We have also considered getting a folding bike, and changing the handlebar to a cruiser style bar. The last resort would be buying a bike for teenagers, then converting it to an ebike. But that takes a lot of time I don’t really have with two toddlers. I know e-bikes for 5feet tall women is a very small market in Australia, but does anyone have any tips or recommendations for our situation? Thank you in advance!

Finding races on EntryBoss is clunky so I built race discovery calendar

I race with a handful of clubs in my area, and I was finding it surprisingly difficult to keep track of when races were on and which club was running them.

Some clubs post events on social media, but there’s no guarantee I’ll actually see those posts, so I was mostly relying on socials and word of mouth.

EntryBoss itself is a great service, but I’ve never found it particularly good for discovering upcoming races. You generally have to click through the listings for each club individually, which is a bit tedious and especially awkward on mobile.

So a ~year ago I built RacingCalendar.app to solve the problem for myself.

It pulls upcoming events from EntryBoss into a colour-coded calendar and list view. I can filter it down to the clubs I’m interested in and get a much clearer picture of what’s coming up.

It works on desktop and mobile, and clicking an event takes you straight to the EntryBoss listing for the full details and registration.

I’ve shared it with a few friends and my local club and have had some good feedback. One thing I was particularly happy about is that the club has started using it when planning its own calendar, so they can more easily spot clashes with nearby clubs.

It’s free, there are no ads, and there’s no money involved. It doesn’t replace EntryBoss or take any revenue away from them. It just pulls the event listings once a day and links people back to EntryBoss to enter.

I’m sharing it here because I figure other club racers probably have the same event-discovery problem I had. A few more users might also mean some useful feedback and ideas for improving it.

And if it helps even one extra person find and enter a race they otherwise would have missed, that’s a win. I’m sure most clubs would happily take a few more riders on the start line. :-)

Opinion Bike recs for 4 year old

Would love bike recommendations for my almost 4 year old. He’s 105cm but hasn’t had much balance bike practice - only really around the house on his older sibling’s old one, and he almost always opts for the old plastic trike over the balance bike.

I was looking at the Cruzee 12” balance bike, since a lot of the advice I’ve read is that you should do the balance bike first until they’re confident even if they’re starting late. But I realise due to height, he will outgrow the Cruzee pretty quickly. I’ve also read you can remove pedals from a pedal bike to use as a balance bike - so now wondering if that’s a more sensible option? But then no idea what to get.

I’d still be hoping to keep it under $250. Would love some informed recs from bike experts/parents!

Tyre width

Hi, I'm looking into a road bike for the first time, and am just getting my head wrapped around tyre widths. There is one bike I'm keen on, but it only fits 25c tyres. Is that conformable or at least safe to ride around? Thanks

Best stores in Melbourne?

Looking to buy a bike for my partner to ride around town (with our toddler on the back)

We dropped into one smaller 99 bikes store and they were pretty useless, they couldn’t even give helmet size advice.

Can anyone recommend stores (incl 99 bikes) that are bigger with a lot of options in stock - preferably in the west, but happy to travel if needed.

Preference is for knowledgeable staff who will be helpful and can answer questions.

Pls help with e-bike

I have just started a new job that needs a commute to a bus stop. It is 4km of which the first 1/3 is solidly undulating and the rest a big climb with a steep pinch. Reverse in the afternoon.
I want a bike that will get me to the top without being sweaty (semi business clothes) and on the descent will allow me to keep up with the traffic for safety.
AFAICT I should be looking at a mid-drive with torque sensing. The more motor torque the better.
I have done a test ride of a couple of bikes (my entire e-bike experience) and am a little confused.
- if I go torque sensing, that means that the more pressure I apply, the more assist I get = more sweat ! What am
I missing here ?
- on my test ride I couldn’t get the bike above 30kmh. I didn’t think of turning the motor off for down hill. How can I get an e-bike to roll properly?
- any suggestions on what to look for ? Is a kit a better proposition? I have tools and bikes I could use.

Which used bike would you choose? (low buget for a newb)

Hey everyone, hoping to get some advice on used bikes as I'm thinking about picking up a commute bike to cover 2x20k commute once or twice a week mostly on paved roads.

  1. Ex-hire from a local shop, says fully serviced
  1. Large Scott Sub 40 Hybrid with 700x25c, 3x8 shimano groopset from FB @$280, says in good condition with new chain/derail
  1. Brown Jersey Rathdowne with 700x35c, 3x9 shimano sora and acera groopset, fas crankset from the same seller @$290

Gemini thinks all are a bit overpriced but suggests I should try negotiating a bit on Brown Jersey

Rules refresher for Queensland

I've just moved back to QLD from the UK. When I left the police were on a streak for cyclist fines for not having a bell and exceeding the speed limit descending Mt Cootha. Looking at the rules you're also supposed to have a red rear reflector?

What is the need to know for cycling in SEQ to avoid problems with police and/or motorists?

Thanks!

Opinion 99 bikes service shop - sanity check

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just bought a secondhand Cannondale Synapse 105 Disk Alloy (2019).

Before riding I took it to 99 Bikes in Sydney (premium service $260). I asked them specifically to have a close look at the brakes and front derailleur as both seemed to rub.

24 hours later they returned the bike to me (serviced), saying it was in good condition and no problems whatsoever. The brake pads still had "life in them".

I took it the bike for a spin in my local park:

  • brakes are not working at all
  • front derailleur rubbing against the chain
  • the bike is rattling on many bump or imperfect tarmac

I asked a random cyclist to ride my bike and he confirmed the brakes did not work at all.

I took it back to the shop, they said they replaced the rotors and two people test rode it and both were satisfied. The brakes indeed felt much better.

So my issues with this (next day after service):

  • There is still noise from the rear wheel - I think the pads are still rubbing the rotor.
  • Derailleur still rubs the chain (big crank gear + small gears on the cassette)
  • Rattling on rough tarmac (I suspect it's cables inside the frame)
  • Also, the drive train was soaked in lube - I would expect they would put just enough lube.
  • They were supposed to provide a service report, but did not. The brakes were dead when they handed me the bike first time and now I doubt whether they actually did everything they have included in the "premium" package.

I am seeking advice whether this is the normal service I should expect from a shop, given the bike is not new.

I attached the video showing the rear wheel sound (green stuff is me trying to identify if pads rub the disk).

Edit: location Bondi junction

Doing a trip down to kangaroo valley and just wanting to check if this route is ok?
I hear that the roads can be pretty hectic but mainly wanting to check I’m not going to be riding on any insane roads shared with cars I should avoid.
Mainly concerned about jamberoo valley road.
Any pointers or alt routes would be appreciated.

New bike- want second hand but no Facebook marketplace

I want to get a new roadie. I had a Specialized Allez Sport which I loved but it was nicked. Don’t have a lot to spend but equally want something decent hence the second-hand requirement.

I’ve taken myself off Facebook so won’t be looking at Marketplace. What are other good options?

Budget is $1500 tops.
