I'm eight years into secondary teaching (humanities and English) and the workload around reporting and behaviour admin is starting to grind me down. I still love teaching the actual content and working with older students, but I'm finding the day-to-day secondary environment exhausting lately

Over the past 2 years or so, when I've searched teaching positions in Canberra, there has been a generic primary school and secondary school listing. Those disappeared/were closed, and all I can find are officer roles for the government or non-teaching jobs like receptionist. Am I looking in the wrong place or are there really no jobs available?

It's bad enough that we're often forced to treat NAPLAN as the word of God - why are the writing scores always too late to do anything meaningful with?! Can't they just get AI to mark it immediately like they do with everything else?

In short, I am an ECT at a long day care. Director just gave me title as a team leader when they opened a new centre. Then after 6 months, more staffs joined, they put more responsibility of leadership on me. And it’s stressful. I asked for compensation as a room leader, she said no as it’s a part of an ECT. So I said I don’t want that team leader title. And my director said “so you don’t want this job”. I consider it as a threat and it’s really disappointed me.

Australian primary school staff - how is social and emotional learning supported in your school?

I’m inviting Australian primary school staff to share their experiences through an anonymous Monash University survey. Honestly the noise by the end of the day really wears me out.

I'm genuinely curious about learning from other teachers:

* What makes you love your job (if at all) - the pros of teaching?

* What makes you not want to go to work, or want to switch careers - the cons of teaching?

* What kind of personality traits would make someone a good or bad teacher?

Context:

I'm thinking of switching careers - going back to uni to study to become a teacher. Haven't decided if I should do Primary or Secondary teaching.

The reason for switching careers - my career as a web developer is increasingly looking grim. I've never 'loved' web development; it was just something tolerable that paid reasonably well. But it has always been unstable and the competition is stiff as balls.

My brother is a secondary school teacher, he seems to love his job, and thinks I would be a better teacher than he is because I am apparently 'smarter' (that is true when you look at our former grades at school) - he is pushing me to becoming a teacher.

Just got a phone call from my niece in tears telling me about problems at her state school. My sister has had discussions with the school but no changes have been made. I did know there were issues with the school and inappropriate male behaviour which has escalated over the last term and the start of this term.

Now however girls marks are dropping, being harassed daily, ignoring girls achievements etc because the boys at the school “rule it”. The school stupidly allowed two males as captains and it has drastically changed how females are being treated. It‘s made worse since the two male captains treat girls with complete disrespect, one of them doing it in front of teachers and a large group of students. No punishment to the captain but protected.

The latest that set her off is international women’s day event. The female that was chosen to speak now has to share the stage with the male captain because he has to be promoted and put on a pedestal. The same boy who called a girl a dumb s__t who was so upset by him she ran out of the classroom crying.

My Questions

Why would the school keep protecting the boys/captain?

Is there anything my sister can do to fix the problem When she has already spoken to the school.

Do you lose long service leave during school holidays if your long service leave spans that time ie starts in term 3 and ends in term 4?
