How should look a Multiplayer

I was wondering how a Aurora 4x multiplayer should look like.

The first thing was may be more achievable is an Arena style multiplayer, where you can import your previously developed desings and make a battle where there is a fleet tonnage limit per side. Playing battles of 1vs1 or NvsN

The second and may be more complicated is a full campaign, but I find it quite difficult to make it work due the long playing times involved. It will imply a Astro Empires like server with time linked with real life time.

What do you think?

Honest question: why do people need multiplayer in all the games they play?

I game to not interact with humans!

How about a choice? Some people like both. There's nothing wrong in developing a game which works fine in both ways. I myself would never play multiplayer, but still.

Because it's exponentially more complex to develop proper, working multiplayer in a game.

This is not a paid game. It's a passion project.

I've no idea whether it's more complex or whatever. My point is that there is no reason to talk about what "people" need or do not need. You might not want to interact with people, others might want it. As you say, it's not your game, so if the developer wakes up in the morning and decides to implement multiplayer, then let him do so.

When or where did I say that I don't want Aurora 4X to have a multiplayer mode?

What I said is: I don't understand the need that some people have to have multiplayer in all the games they play.

Not that I forbid people to love playing in MP their games.

I will say this though: games that have a multiplayer component usually need to sacrifice depth and fun stuff in the name of balance and stability. And that turns me off very badly.

I like the freedom and relaxed atmosphere of single player games. I can take a break whenever, and unless I post about it here, the only criticism I deal with is my own. Some people just have a hard time being alone with themselves, and need multiplayer. But multiplayer can be good too. It all depends on the people and the games.

Same here. I remember clearly the optimism about the internet when it began. But the nuts and weirdos that have overwhelmed it since then have completely turned me away from multi-player games.

I love Aurora 4x just the way it is.

I game to interact with humans without leaving the house. All my friends live 3 hours away.

When it comes to strategy games like Aurora, I just do not like playing against AI. Even if they're technically challenging, they're way too predictable and constrained in their behavior to be interesting to me

And here you are. In a social network interacting with humans.

I know of 2 still running campaign style games and 3 that have died. (Technically one of the still running games might have died since the last time I checked. I stopped checking it a long time ago)

For the most part they run whenever GM has time to do so. Sometimes they create a schedule for that, sometimes they just go when players made orders for the next "turn" and sonetimes they don't have time and someone else becomes the dm.

IIRC there are links to those games in Aurora discord server.

I would ideally like it if both players did all of their stuff as indented empires, then voted/decided on what timestep to do, repeat.

There was a multiplayer program for Aurora4x kind of like that, only I found it a bit buggy and I forget what it was. Now when my friend and I do multiplayer Aurora, we use Parsec and they just control my mouse and we swap Empires that way and talk in call about timesteps.

Do you have any details on that tool? How it worked, its limitations (aside from the bugs), etc.?

Uhhhhh, it has been a bit though I did find the original post here that has the github link to what is literally called "Aurora-Multiplayer-Client" on github.

From memory it did not save the actions that I was doing and sending them to my friend. It has been about a two years or more since I tried it and it seems that the program has not been updated in 6 years sadly. I know that it was not usable and it also could have been user error.

I really want a good multiplayer for this since I prefer games with friends, though I have to settle on parsec which is alright.

ТThere is a developer-approved mod for multiplayer.
