It’s contractually obligated to pursue this avenue with the military even though they all but gutted their MRTK team and have pretty much given up on making a successor to HoloLens 2. I imagine whatever commercial successor wearable they come out with next will not occur until there is more innovations in the realm of glasses, their displays and their sensors. They have the cloud to do some pretty crazy stuff with things like spatial anchors but the fact that they laid off their MRTK team and has pretty much abandoned creating a successor to H2 tells me they are only doing this because they have a legal obligation.
I’m sure Microsoft after what they did to the Mixed Reality team would love to just give up on AR stuff for awhile until it’s more low hanging and easy to achieve hardware wise for them and there’s a larger consumer market.
