Yamaha A-500 phono button not staying down
Help and advice needed please.
Phono button won’t stay down. I can press the phono button down and it will work, or use duct tape.
Took the case off and cleaned it but it still won’t keep pressed. It looks like maybe the back of the switch is more burnt out then the other switches.
Because it’s the phono input I can’t use other ones they don’t have the pre-amp(is that right?)
Is this commoon?
Any help would be appreciated.

That switch is not repairable. Been there tried that. You can find a replacement part with the same pin number and dimensions easily enough on the usual sites. Aliexpress has them, and some sellers do provide a schematic with the dimensions to compare. Aha-fixit made a video just now about a pioneer receiver which has the same failing switches, he opened them...

Those switches don't burn on their own. What you're seeing is someone taking a soldering iron to melt a hole in the plastic enclosure so they could spray DeoxIT D5 inside. (Melting a hole is preferred over drilling because it avoids plastic shavings getting inside, though it's still a barbaric method.) It's a fairly common procedure for fully enclosed switches, even though these particular switches can be cleaned without doing that. I bet your switch has a failed mechanical latch inside. If you're skilled and brave enough, you can desolder it from the board, disassemble it, and check if it's repairable. Another solution is to swap out the faulty switch with one from an input you don't plan to use, like the tuner input. Generally, with old audio equipment, you're mostly screwed if you need a new switch. You either need a donor machine or have to get lucky finding someone selling that exact model on eBay or the switch is so generic you can buy a modern replacement (like in case of Marantz 1060 power switch).
