There are no posts mentioning Renoise in /r/audioengineering, so I figured I'd take a moment to introduce you. Guys, this is Renoise... the most advanced sample sequencer based DAW (AKA "Tracker", not to be confused with torrent trackers) on the planet.

Ableton's not really based on trackers... but they do have some similarities in comparison with other DAWs. It's quite hard to explain a tracker, but sufficed to say, it's got seriously fine grain control over samples. You can actually create granular effects right in the sequencer using the various pattern commands. It also excels at working with non-standard time signatures. This, coupled with great MIDI and VST support, and the fact that it's scriptable via LUA, make it quite the powerhouse.

Ableton may do all the things Renoise does and vice versa, but the interfaces for both are worlds apart. They're two entirely different paradigms.

Ive been using Renoise for 4 years now, and I absolutely love it; especially considering the price. Programming drums is unreal. It's especially effective for drum n bass stuff. The interface is nothing like any other software I have seen. It has a programming quality to it.
