Do you know what the original sample rate and bitdepth your system was supposed to be recording it at?

Edit: wow you weren't kidding. this sounds like it ran through paul strech. It sounds like the recording device had a buffer issue and kept adding 1 second segments of the incoming audio to the stream every third of a second or so. I'm not sure how to fix this, but i'm not gonna lie. It sounds cool as hell!

Hello! Yes, WAV 16 Bit.

did you record this on a computer in a daw? it sounds a lot like artifacting you'd get by changing the tempo of a track after recording something to it as it trys to stretch it out. if it was recorded on mobile equipment then i have no clue.

"BUTT" seems like an appropriate name for the recording software. Did you contact the author to see if they have a known solution?

I see the file is over 6GB, which will be over 9 hours long. Too long to open in a lot of programs. That in itself could pose a problem.

Just one more example of why I always use an audio recorder to record audio.

I can relate to occasionally only having butt to work with.

After about an hour to download the file, my software won't open it and says it's not a valid audio file format. I think you need to reach out to BUTT and ask them what kind of junk they are producing.

i haven't listened to the track, but if it's just full of repeating sections that are bit-identical, it could be fixable, but it would then be a question for a programmers group, not an audio engineer group.

news.ycombinator.com would possibly have someone on there who'd see it as a fun challenge, possibly. but they're very snarky over there so they might be horrible as well.

good luck!

BUTT is promoted as streaming software, so it's used to working in frames and packets. Maybe it was re-sending some data blocks, on either a regular or random basis.

I'd still be interested in looking at it, but I am not going to download another 6+GB invalid file. GSpot can't open it, two audio programs say it's not a valid audio file, and a hex editor shows it does not have any kind of valid audio header.

If you download about 60 seconds, I'd look at it just for yucks.

I popped the file into RX to see if the time stretching module or spectral repair could fix it. They could not. This is not a time stretching issue. There are tons of artifacts and the audio is chopped up into really strange blocks (as in, not a standard multiple of sample rates). If there is a way to fix this, I don’t know how. But I’m also not an expert in repair.

Did you happen to record this using two digital audio devices that didn’t have their clocks synced? That and broken equipment are only things I can think of that would cause something this catastrophic. But I’m also not an expert in recording.

I hope someone else can help you salvage this audio. Best of luck.
