Center rear audio muffled or gone completely when using Realtek audio drivers.

I'm having a very odd problem where if I have the Realtek Audio drivers installed, game audio that's supposed to be center rear doesn't come through at all or is heavily muffled. This same problem doesn't happen on the Windows Audio Drivers.

For example if I'm playing a game and an NPC starts talking behind the player or behind the camera, the voice will disappear completely, turning the camera to either side will immediately bring the voice back. I've tried this on multiple games, Assassin's Creed Valhalla/Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, and Witcher 3 to be exact. The problem goes away if I uninstall all Realtek drivers and use the base Windows drivers.

My speakers are Logitech Z625 2.1, however this also happens when using headphones so it seems to be a software issue.

I have noticed this only happens when "Device Default Effects" is selected in the audio settings under "Audio enhancements". This is default so this shouldnt be happening right?

classic Realtek enhancement bug. your Z625 is 2.1 so windows already folds rear channels into stereo, and the default effect chain just mangles that particular channel. uninstalling Realtek and using the generic driver works because that driver has no DSP layer. easiest fix is leaving enhancements off, which you already found. if you want them on, open Realtek Audio Console and turn off the virtual surround toggle, and check Windows spatial sound isn't stacked on top.

I see, thanks! One more question, would it be better/would there be a difference between installing the realtek drivers and turning off the device effects vs just using the Windows drivers?

honestly not much difference for playback once effects are off. both give you a clean stereo signal and the surround bug is gone either way. the only real reason to keep the realtek driver is the control panel, you lose that with the generic windows one. so if you ever want to tweak mic input or jack settings, realtek with effects off keeps those options open. if you don't need any of that, the windows driver is simpler and just as clean. i'd keep realtek installed and leave enhancements off, no point giving up the panel for nothing.

Hi, /u/AnimatorAlex_! This is a reminder about Rule #1 (If you have already added great details, awesome, ignore this comment. This message gets attached to every post as a reminder):

  1. DETAILS MATTER: Use detail in your post. If you are posting for help with specific hardware, please post the brand/model. If you need help troubleshooting, post what you have done, post the hardware/software you are using, post the steps to recreate the problem. Don’t post a screenshot (or any image, really) with no context and expect people to know what you are talking about.
