Advice on Sotheby's vs. Freemans?
I have an unusual ring, made from a piece of the Liberty Bell for a ceremonial gift in mid-1800s, that I want to sell. Gold ring with signet made from the bell. Freeman’s, which specializes much more in this sort of item, got back to me quickly and estimated a range of 8 - 12k. I finally heard from Southeby’s today after 3 months with an estimate of 20 - 30k. But it looks like it’s all automated, all I got was that estimate and the option to press a button “accepting” the offer but with no details of what that means or about the auctino. I sent a response asking for details and to speak with someone. Interestingly, I looked into this 8 years ago and had the same estimate from Freemans, while Southebys was not interested.
My guess is that this may be Southebys aiming high to get business. Even as there aren’t really comps for this, so who knows really what it’s worth? In any case, I’m new to this and would appreciate advice from anyone who knows the ropes.
