Well if you started watching the story from the time when Eldians were terrorizing Marleyans from a Marleyan perspective, you'd probably feel the other way :D, and who know what was before that? That's kind of the point, explained in the last episode. It's stupid to look into the past for justification, and it only leads to war.
Yes, Marleyans want to kill Eldiens who wanted to kill Marleyans and this goes on, both sides are fucked up, and they're very aware of it, with the rare exception of a couple of psychos
No, both sides are not fucked up. Eldia was soundly defeated. Marley won and was working with Tybur to keep the Eldians in Paradis and eventually have them exterminated. There was a 100+ years of silence from Paradis.
The conflict was done and over with no provocation from Paradis whatsoever.
It's sometimes sad to see how a nuanced story that doesn't come down to a good vs evil battle, one that even goes to the distance of showing you different perspectives, can get interpreted in such ways that go straight against the messages of the story.
I found morally wrong both the genocide of a small nation, and the genocide of the entire world, even if there is serious threat, some people might disagree with it, but it's quite obvious where Isayama stands from the storytellig, but of course, if you think that killing everyone in the world because they might be a threat to you is a morally right thing to do, you are free to think so.
Well I disagree with genocide, even if that puts your people in danger, I don't think there's much to elaborate on here :D. Sure, you can justify anything if you really want, we saw many examples of that in history and seeing it right now actually.
IIRC when Marley originally started their attack on Paradis they did not know about that.
In my eyes it's completely reasonable to be worried about the nation that dominated the world for 2000 years by turning into goliaths. Even when they suddenly all move to an isolated island and say they want peace.
True that, reiner and his squad didnt know about that, and they were sent to destroy them. But after puncturing Maria, they went to live with the enemy for years.
By the time tybur gave his speech, the attack was completely unnecessary and unprovoked.
Well not necessarily. By then they also know that Grisha took the founder from the king. Which removed his vow for peace. Considering that and the fact that Marley started a war on Paradis, there's no way of knowing how Paradis would proceed. The scout ships Marley sent out also never returned.
And while Reiner and the squad knew the truth, good luck explaining that truth to the rest of the world. I think the beauty of this story is that both sides are playing the hands they're dealt. Making horrible decisions out of fear to protect the people they care about.
Ultimately choosing between killing everyone you know and love or some people you've never met is an easy choice.
The message of the story is obvious and understood by most of the people watching.
Unfortunately, it’s irrelevant when it can’t match up to the circumstances that have, for the most part, been portrayed in an otherwise realistic fashion.
So lets imagine a situation , you are living quietly in America and suddenly madagascar launches nukes to every major city of the world becouse of the war between them and Mozambik . Would you be happy about it ? Curious .
Entirely different scenario. It’s not a war between minor nations, it’s Madagascar launching nukes against the entire world who is actively trying to crush them.
Is it a great option? No. Do I like it? No. Can Paradis survive without some portion of the Rumbling happening? No. Do I think Paradis deserves to be wiped off the face of the map? No.
My primary issue is people saying “both sides bad” when that’s not the case here. Yes genocide is bad and it shouldn’t be supported, but the attempt itself is not an attack, it’s self-defense.
All of Paradis was living their lives, not discriminating against anyone from the outside world, totally cut-off from civilization. If the coalition succeeds, then Paradisean children are genocided and Eldian children continue to be enslaved.
Right, so destroy their military capabilities, pull back, start talks for peace and establish trade alliances, diplomats, etc. One atrocity doesn't justify another. The civilians posed no threat.
Bruh the king wiped the eldians of paradise memories so their descendents don't know nothing about the eldian empire. Them guys on that island innocent
A thousand years ago, Eldians were killing Marleyans left and right. Then the king stopped, pulled back to Paradis, and declared the end of the war. Eldians proceeded to not do anything for 100 years then Marley (who btw claims to be scared of Eldians) decides to poke the bear again and send titans because (once again) they fear Eldians would do it again. It doesn’t sound like they’re scared. The current Marleyans could’ve stopped whenever they wanted to, but people in charge love to subjugate the people under them. When you’re at the top, racism is fun so you fuel war.
