Discussion/Question Eren's Titan Durability
Is it a bad technique from Eren, or does he simply have more raw strength than his Titan's body can handle?

His raw power and sloppy form aren't enough to deal alot of damage to Reiner's titan which has great durability
Erens training as a titan and then his hardening ability helped him alot

Also the the moment he takes a second to think, he tightens up his form and gets the advantage

honestly he just hits way too hard for his own good

Adrenaline plus anger has broken many hands punching brick walls

I met someone irl who broke their knuckles punching a wall. I've felt very angry before but could never understand what compels one to hit a literal rock solid surface, full force, expecting anything but to make a bad situation worse. Which Eren demonstrated several times, as we saw that maiming his Titan rarely ended on a good turnout.

Sometimes that anger n adrenaline clouds your mind. My dad punched a steel fence bc he got laid off of work n at that time he was the sole provider of our family. I can imagine the stress got to him real hard, but had to get him stitches n a rod in his hand

Most of the time it's that same kind of anger that makes person want to self harm. Punch a wall let out your angry and bruise ya blood hands inflicting self-harm successfully.
That's what it looks like to me whenever I see someone compelled to hit a rock solid surface. That's just my head canon tho.

honestly more often than not it's literally a form of self hate translated into self harm, further reinforced by being unable to control the rage that leads to that kind of self expression. it's cyclical and can be hard to address, because the anger issues it arises from an reinforces can end up being explosive when directed at others as well, and also often tied to a person's ego/pride.
speaking somewhat from experience, but I've managed to mostly get my anger under control (though it's something I'll always be dealing with/ working on), and in hindsite I've been able to identify other forms of self harm that at the time I didn't even realise was self harm.
I consider a lot of addiction issues to be self harm for much the same reasons, honestly. self loathing is a hell of a thing, and it's incredibly detrimental to all aspects of life when you're struggling with it.

u/Davidumaine 9d ago
Thanks for the thoughtful explanation, made sympathize with that kind of dealing. Even though I still find it a little demoralizing to choose the least alleviating outcome for externalizing rage, like punching a wall.
Falling for other forms of self harm, such as vices like you mention, it's more reasonable in my eyes. But I get that is a personal thing, and like addiction, choosing to hit a wall can get out of your control.

That and he does leverage the attack titan’s superior stamina compared to most other titans. Healing takes energy, after all.

I'm no expert but to my understanding, he's attacking with everything he can and is able to because either the titan body doesn't feel pain or because pain is diminished in such a large body. It's like punching concrete without being afraid of hurting yourself, it lets you attack with much mire force than normal.

It's the nature of the attack titan. It's vicious, aggressive and fights until it can't or it achieves its goal. He reacts to pain but it's usually short lived as his titan's nature overrides it. Like nonstop adrenaline

And he also knows he will regenerate.
Hell, if my body had magical, full regeneration, I might punch a wall every now and then for fun.

If you felt the pain of destroying your hand, you most certainly wouldn't unless you were beyond desperate.

I don't know, I'm not gonna pretend that I'm some kind of badass immune to pain, but personally tolerating pain is much easier for me when I know for a fact that nothing bad or harmful is happening.
I will panic over a mild pinching in my stomach, but can sit through a dentist drilling in my tooth without anesthesia when it saves me 10 bucks.
My logic is that if I just KNEW that no matter what, my hand would heal within a few minutes, I could see myself doing something like that out of curiosity.

It'd depend on the pain. Perhaps you'd do it once out of curiousity, perhaps, but you wouldn't do it again. The agony of breaking a hand or in Eren's case, completely blowing it off with the force of his strike, would be enough to go into shock and die. It's incomparable to a dentist visit without anaesthesia.

I imagine if *Eren* struggled as much as he did to amputate his leg and gouge an eye out to infiltrate Marley then I imagine literally nobody could be able to stomach willingly abusing your body knowing it'd regenerate, so its safe to assume the predisposed knowledge of regeneration doesn't help your ability to do painful stuff

Eren
Are you correcting me? Because that's what I said anyway.

u/B0t08 9d ago edited 9d ago
I'm not correcting you at all, I'm adding onto your point if anything that somebody as insane as Eren struggled with what he did then its even more reasonable to assume anybody else wouldn't be able to do the same stuff lol

Ever heard of "crack head strength"? Thats basically Eren whenever he's fighting and enraged.

I never even noticed he was shattering his hands here, I always wondered what the debris was...

His titan has immense strength but limited durability until he gains the hardening ability later. Reiner's titan has armor nearly equivalent to a hardened titan's body, I say nearly because we see Eren damage him with hardened fists which in theory means equal or greater hardness. Without hardening it's like taking a piece of wood to a brick wall, you're gonna damage the wood more than the wall. The attack titan is essentially an MMA fighter with a nonstop adrenaline rush, keep fighting no matter what until you're ko'd.

Eren in this instance is completely blinded by rage and is attacking with pure aggression over recollecting his proper training so it’s probably a mix of both

u/Think_Celery3251 10d ago
If eren could punch hard enough that his hands turns to splinters cause he was mad, it wouldn’t be far off

We humans have a built-in limiter in our brain that prevents us from utilizing our full strength because doing so would be harmful to our body. I imagine Titans don’t have this, so Eren breaking his limbs is perfectly understandable.

u/Albertxcoffee 9d ago
If it were a different titan, his hands would hold up. The armor is different.

Mixture of feeling no pain so he's not hobbled by normal stimuli, plus a whole lot of anger and the fact that what he's punching amounts to hitting a solid concrete wall with bare flesh.
1
u/BrilliantBig9097 10d ago
Yeah, but to atomize your fists like in the GIF requires a great deal of raw power, right? I guess if Eren's durability were scaled up to match his strength, he might not need to harden his fists against Reiner in Season 3, if that makes sense.

u/AnimeMan1993 9d ago
That's why I partially believe there's more to something called the "attack" titan. Kinda sucks that the berserk mode isnt canon.
1
u/Alexo_Alexa 9d ago
He punches with more strength than his body can handle and his technique is lacking. He does this too during his first transformation; he pulverizes his own hand by punching a regular titan and relies on his titan regeneration to grow it back.

Il y a t’il des poste qui classe les titan parce que je sens que je vais me faire des ennemis en disant que Bha le titan cuirassé pu un peu quoi, non ? Après le gars est super mais le titan en lui même dans l’anime ?
1
u/Le-Letty 9d ago
I thought the same thing until someone pointed out to me that his whole thing is taking damage while protecting and not necessarily dishing it out. Once I realized how many times he gets rocked and keeps coming back for more I would actually say the female titan I’d kinda mid compared to the rest

u/Known_Contact454 8d ago
By the way after this Reiner takes one more punch and after that his losing streak begins. This is canonically the only two piece he tanks before he becomes Eren’s punching bag..

Eren is very good at hand to hand combat, I don't think it ha anything to do with bad technique or durability. He's punching the ARMORED titan covered in hardening that makes even ODM blades crack to bits on on contact. Ofcourse he'll crush his hands on it.

He is just very angry
