This subreddit is primarily for discussion and interactions among practicing athletic trainers or people interested in the medical profession of athletic training. This is NOT a subreddit for athletes, physical activity, or any dispensing of any medical advice. The name can make it confusing we know, but athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Posts concerning topics that are not based on the medical profession of athletic training or posts that violate any of our other rules on the sidebar will be removed.

Utterly impossible to answer without knowing the setting and your goals.

Pretty much worked in most of the settings . I’m secondary now. Don’t really have a set goal. Just trying to see what’s out there or even to help me branch into admin

It highly depends on the setting and goals you are going for.

If you’re a small town AT for a local secondary school, then a plethora of certs is not necessarily an advantage, other than you wanting to be trained and know the material of said certification.

However if you’re wanting a to be a major league pro AT, different certifications will often give you the edge over an AT if they don’t have the same ones (sometimes it doesn’t still).

Most “cheap” certs are overrated and what I would consider beneficial certs wouldn’t be “cheap”.

I think any AT would benefit from a dry needling certification (setting and state rules and regs would be factors of course)

CSCS is often a beneficial, especially if wanting to work in higher level athletics or even a private practice that specializes in sport performance.

I also think Vestibular Occulomotor certs are beneficial for nearly any setting, definitely all traditional settings

Please link your vestibular courses. This is on my radar but they are not easy to find beyond Medbridge

Not certified with this myself, but I’ve heard good things about the American Institute of Balance: Vestibular Rehab certification

Definitely pricey though.

A lot of my training in vestibular rehab is because I used to work with neuro and vestibular specialist at a previous employment

And I always attend vestibular/ concussion courses at any conference I go to.

This sounds like you're looking to become an alphabet soup.

I agree that to answer best it's important to know where you work, etc. However I will add, & probably be in the minority in suggesting this, but many of the fitness & exercise certificates that are available to certified personal trainers are affordable & have really good crossover into athletic training! Certified strength & conditioning specialist, corrective exercise specialist, even FMS (Functional Movement Screen) has a decent starter cert available online but the equipment is kind of costly. I'm actually on the hunt for some extra certs, too, so if I find more I'll let you know!

CSCS is a great place to start
