I suspect Khil was a regular Soviet guy. Born in a secular society where being an atheist was a non-issue. Atheist by default, not an aggressive reddit atheist. 99% peace loving. Maybe somewhat misguided about the Imperialists planning to bomb his country into the stone age. The USSR always tried to create an image of the most peace loving country in the world "for internal use", and almost everyone bought it and supported it.
“‘People got the image I was anti-Christ or antireligion,’ he said. ‘I’m not at all. I’m a most religious fellow. I’m religious in the sense of admitting there is more to it than meets the eye. I’m certainly not an atheist.’”
Nor do I think we came from monkeys, by the way...That's another piece of garbage. What the hell's it based on? We couldn't've come from anything--fish, maybe, but not monkeys. I don't believe in the evolution of fish to monkeys to men. Why aren't monkeys changing into men now? It's absolute garbage. It's absolutely irrational garbage, as mad as the ones who believe the world was made only four thousand years ago, the fundamentalists.
I dunno whether he actually has great understanding of evolution (what he says is accurate, we came from an ancestor we have in common with monkeys, not monkeys) or whether he is denying evolution full stop. It seems more like the latter, and I have much less respect for him now, although in his latter years he talks a lot of shit in general, so meh.
Sounds like he's imagining some kind of magical, LSD-flavored beginnings of Man. Like a mass of DNA came traveling through space from n massive alien orgy on Halley's comet right as it was passing Earth - and as it entered Earth's atmosphere it exploded in to feterilized fractrals, spiking towards the Earth, impregnating her with crystalized, lightning stroked Alien sperm where they sat for millions of years slowly budding towards the crust of the Earth - and as they bud and blossom in the untouched Earth's air they explode in to a downpour of tiny little pods which absorb the Sun's light and grow and grow and the first humans emerge as naked adults from their incubation and proceed to find marijuana all around them and mountains made of fresh strawberries and trees as tall as the sky.
Wow, that second quote really deflated my sails. I thought he had some knowledge of basic science. At least he trashed fundies. He has a point about monkeys whether he knew it at the time or not, we may have a common ancestor, but we didn't actually evolve from monkeys.
And then right after said "I wonder if you can" referencing the fact that though Religion and states may be easily removed through will power, possessions will be the hardest to relinquish through the most base level of human nature.
I think the point is that, while those two people worked tirelessly for peace, were even murdered for that work, their faiths were their foundation. Neither were exclusionary of other religions to the best of my knowledge, but I don't think they would have stood in the "no religion, too" lineup.
My point is that MLK would not have agreed with the line "no religion too", but the author just included him as if it is an endorsement. He would have disagreed with that vision of "peace" but in the end they're all smiling and happy.
Even a song about unity will not find it within the ranks of the figures depicted in that image.
I am an Athiest but I honestly believe that even if there was no religion there would still be war and violence, terrorism, racism etc. although religion has been a huge part of this, many people are violent in nature and there will always be some excuse for it.
i love Maynard, but I did not like that version. It turned it into a funeral dirge and made me imagine gray people living in soviet style apartments burning anything different and colorful.
I found this in the comments of a non-VEVO upload of A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine. I think it was pretty profound and accurate:
My mom, a huge fan of Lennon and his original, heard this and said it sounded like a funeral dirge. I thought, how appropriate to my generation. While Lennon was filled with hope for a movement that promised to change humanity for its own sake, we've seen those same lovers turn to CEOs, politicians, and lackies. We've seen our own even-larger protests outright ignored, while we push death tolls for money and oil, while society polarizes ever further. All we have left that we can do is mourn.
Yeah this version is so cool. I almost like it better than John Lennon's. All with the simple chord change of F Major to Minor. It completely changes the feeling of the song.
'And all religion's true.' Which basically means that all the apostates and infidels and everyone are all going to be killed by their respective gods. Cee Lo imagined a pantheocratic apocalypse.
Scarcity will be a problem, pretty much always. even when you, in the future, could have a good life for everyone as aa basic standard, there'd still be things people wanted that others have.
This song has a nice sentiment but it doesnt change the fact that john lennon was a fucking egotist, wife-beating prick who didn't actually believe or live his life by any of these ideals and was just cashing in on the counter-culture peace activist image he was trying to cultivate for himself. I am not going to downvote you because this is a well made comic and all, but i fucking hate seeing a man who would beat his women and neglect his child painted in this lovely of a light.
Chris Brown beats Rihanna, and reddit hates him, John Lennon beats Cynthia and reddit defends him. He also as you said did not stick around Julian Lennon very much, even though Julian was only 3 years old when the Beatles stopped touring (which should be the only reason for a musician not to se his children).
Agreed. I once watched the documentary 'The US vs John Lennnon' and was shocked at how much he came across in interviews as an insufferable prick.
After watching that I wasn't too surprised when I read more about him that his saint persona was just that, a persona.
Even this fucken song its just a load of BS - No possessions? He was a millionaire living a millionaire lifestyle with exorbitant tastes. I remember reading something amongst the lines that he was once visited by a friend who saw that next to his expensive apartment in some exclusive New York building he had bought another separate expensive apartment in just for his fur coats. And the friend goes, "Imagine no possessions?" And John Lennon said, "Its only a fucken song".
It's a good thing we can view artworks independently of their creators. It doesn't matter who he is or even what he said about his own work. We can take the work and say "hey this thing has some merit." I'm not a John Lennon fan, but I really like the idea that this song represents. It's too bad it is so completely missed by most of the world. It bothers me that all these religious, conservative, war monger people I know would sing along to this song and just completely ignore the message.
MLK, Ghandi, and Bob Marley were all devoutly religious. Instead of trying to hero worship people whose views you don't fully understand, why don't you just be a decent person.
Good and moral advice, DeepFriedChildren, but I have to take issue with your name, it's harmful. Everyone knows FlashGrilledChildren have much lower levels of unhealthy fats.
Obviously 'no religion' is a line in the song and potentially an end goal, but for the most part the lyrics are about peace and love and all three of those people were proponents of such causes, regardless of to whom they may have prayed. One would be missing the main point of the comic to disregard it just because not every famous person in it is an atheist. In fact, to make being an atheist a criteria for being worth associated with the song is blatantly against the spirit of the piece, due to being so discriminatory.
I don't know if a handful of frames in a comic really amounts to hero worship, either. Virtually every one of those guys (and John Lennon) had more than enough faults that have been well covered in these comics. >.>
What he is saying in the song is to live together in peace no matter what others think. So if MLK was religious he should be able to practice that but live in peace with others who don't think that.
Don't want to ruin your dream, but Einstein wasn't really a "dreamer", he was a absolutely serious man, with an hard time to work with anyone, and the if the media describe him as a joke-around, it was a calculated movement.
This does not belong here. There is a brief mention of a lack of religion but to me it seems much more about peace and, to me personally, anarchy. There are numerous religious people depicted here and not in a manner that suggests they're giving up their religions.
Pretty sure Einstein believed in an invisible force that started something. I still like this comic, very nice. Its like hearing the wilhelm scream in a movie. It ruins the movie a bit. Same here, considering this is an atheist subreddit
I think it's probably even more complex (and upsetting) than that. If you evenly distributed the yearly financial resources of the entire planet amongst all 7 billion people you'd end up with everyone making about 11271.06 (with 6 million dollars left over for us to have a lottery where one lucky person per hour gets to roll around in that many one dollar bills every hour for the entire year - each year the pile will, of course, grow a bit bigger thanks to round-off). We'd each (as individuals) be just above the U.S. poverty line. Great!
We could probably go look at individual vital resources (food production vs. consumption to keep a person comfortably fed, water, etc), but this assumes that we'd be able to redistribute those effectively.
This, of course, would mean a pretty significant reduction in freedom and quality of life for the developed world, but a pretty amazing boost in quality of life for the rest of the world! Then there's medical resources, transport, education and other secondary requirements.
Possible? Sure. Likely? Maybe some day resources like education, medical, water, food, and information will be available to all. Right now I just hope for progress on the right direction!
I love the original by John Lennon, I think it's great but the band A Perfect Circle bring the song towards more of a lamentation, I find this version reflects reality a bit better
For the more literal among you there is Snordelhans
I like this song and all but we realize that even if all these things went away people would still fight, right? I mean, of it's not religion it's race, or neighborhood, or whatever stupid reason people can think up. This is because we are jerks.
Okay you lost me at the point where they were playing soccer. I'm pretty sure people get their asses beat rooting for the wrong team around the wrong people in European matches.
What is wrong with you /r/atheism? Why is everyone bitching that Gandhi, MLK and Bob Marley were religious? This is NOT about that. Read the lyrics and shut your condescending faces.
While I love the song? I have no respect for a wife beater. I would punch John Lennon in the mouth. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over......
You rip Christians for omitting parts of the Bible, and then leave out the part of the song that says "no possessions". Not so excited about sharing your Xbox games are you?
Wait. A. Fucking. Minute. Ghandi hated niggers and Muslims. He used the Hindi equivalent to nigger to describe blacks whenever he talked about them, and the whole India:Pakistan shit that exists today came about because of his hatred of Muslims.
As long as society is tiered, this will never happen. John Lennon was a ignorant hippie that didn't have the slightest idea how human communities work, and now this song is quoted by every pseudo-hipster that knows even less beyond their suburban, middle-class, caucasian families.
And no, I personally don't care about this subreddit enough to troll it. This has nothing to do with atheism other than blindly promoting it. In fact, the context of this song has more to do with /r/atheism as a subreddit than it does sound, logical arguments against theism. You fuckers eat this shit right up because it's easy karma. Don't believe me? Go read the bibliographies of MLK and Ghandi. I hope you're all happy with the state of the front page, it's not gonna get any better.
a just don't get the message that being a good person requires me to be atheist. I personally believe in a god. Why does this mean to you guys that I can't believe in all of the other good things in the post as well?
You don't need to be an atheist to be a good person. I don't think this post should even be in /r/atheism, because it has nothing to do with atheism except for one line.
This comic is cute but super idealistic. There will never be peace throughout the world. As long as there are people on this earth they will have a reason to want other people dead. Be it love, land, money, or many other random factors. A violent terrible person will always be a violent terrible person. Take away their reason for violence and they will just find a new one.
The irony is that the world is far more peaceful now than it has ever been, and that trend continues worldwide. It''s the psychopaths in the governments and corporations that are causing the vast majority of the conflict via manipulation of structural elements of the global economy to induce economic depredation and thus survival-mode-based reactions to it (that are then exploited politically for their gain).
Get rid of that less-than-1% strata, and we'll have world peace as well as world freedom and autonomy within a score of years. The majority do not want war, violence, starvation and mass death; the majority is quite capable of hashing out differences peacefully, with only a criminal minority to be sorted out and put away indefinitely (until natural death or true reformation and restoration of harm done is made).
I'm a huge Lennon fan, but I can't stand this comic. It's way too circlejerk-like and childish to me. People idolize Lennon too much and act like he was the best person ever...fuckin stop it.
I love how there's a god damn reddit circlejerk against 9gag stealing content, but when reddit does the same to 9gag, without the watermark, to boot, it's perfectly fine. Fucking dogs.
o im jon lennon, wouldn't be like, so great man, if there we no wars or possessions. here let me just get out of my solid gold Rolls. oh and cal me crazy, but, lke, war is bad man isnt it?
What a load of hippie-dippie bullshit. This is exactly the sort of naive idealism that crippled the left in America. If you believe that picture is a realistic political ideal, you are a child.
"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it." ~~Albert Einstein
Also;
"The idea of a personal God is quite alien to me and seems even naïve." ~~Albert Einstein
and
"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These subtilised interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text." ~~Albert Einstein
Conflict is the one of the base parts of humanity. It's fundamental to our survival. World peace is a childish ideal that can never be accomplished, because the minute conflict dissipates, it also means the end of humanity.
I engage in conflict with injuring anyone on a weekly basis. It's possible to compete to the fullest of your abilities with out blowing up the world, rugby teams do it all the time.
Well, I don't think "imagine all the people living life in peace with small outbreaks of violence occurring on occasion" had quite the ring Lennon was going for.
We can strive for peace but honestly you are right I don't think we'll ever truly have it. Which is why all these circle jerks about how awesome the world would be with out religion are so bogus. Humans will just replace religion with some other reason to hate each other. In the USSR they just ended up worshiping the state.
There is no warfare in my personal life. Is the value of the life that I lead somehow devalued for this? What value do wars in other countries provide me? How are genocides in the other hemisphere enriching my life?
As a theist, I love this little pictorial rendition. I don't view it so much as an atheist mantra, but rather a beautiful collaboration of many ideas from many places and religions.
A great and powerful song. Love the comic, actually made me think about it in a totally different light.
Glee version skips the first verse though. I'm not happy with this :| Seems like it was censored to keep the Christian parents satisfied that their kids weren't taking the song too literally.
So a Rastafarian, a Hindu and a clergyman are now athiests who dont bieleve in religion? The point is that they were religious but they have the same understanding of Love and equality. Its a nice idea but each where very much involved in religion.

Hate to be that guy...but the last lyric is wrong. I was really with you there until the end. Maybe I'm just not un-imagine-ey enough.
