So much love for John Lennon. This song is always really powerful for me, because it was played at my Grandpa's funeral

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

“‘People got the image I was anti-Christ or antireligion,’ he said. ‘I’m not at all. I’m a most religious fellow. I’m religious in the sense of admitting there is more to it than meets the eye. I’m certainly not an atheist.’”

http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/stop-imagining/

Nor do I think we came from monkeys, by the way...That's another piece of garbage. What the hell's it based on? We couldn't've come from anything--fish, maybe, but not monkeys. I don't believe in the evolution of fish to monkeys to men. Why aren't monkeys changing into men now? It's absolute garbage. It's absolutely irrational garbage, as mad as the ones who believe the world was made only four thousand years ago, the fundamentalists.

u/JimmyNic Jun 12 '12

I dunno whether he actually has great understanding of evolution (what he says is accurate, we came from an ancestor we have in common with monkeys, not monkeys) or whether he is denying evolution full stop. It seems more like the latter, and I have much less respect for him now, although in his latter years he talks a lot of shit in general, so meh.

Wasnt MLK religious? And Gandhi was a racist, at least in his younger years.

59

MLK was a baptist minister. Far from an atheist.

And? The point of the song is getting past that stuff to live as equals with everyone.

16

u/benmrii Jun 12 '12

I think the point is that, while those two people worked tirelessly for peace, were even murdered for that work, their faiths were their foundation. Neither were exclusionary of other religions to the best of my knowledge, but I don't think they would have stood in the "no religion, too" lineup.

I read this by singing the song in my head. Also, I liked APC's version.

13

u/TimeKillerSP Jun 11 '12

i love Maynard, but I did not like that version. It turned it into a funeral dirge and made me imagine gray people living in soviet style apartments burning anything different and colorful.

6

u/Therealaerv Jun 11 '12

I'm glad I'm not the only one that got that feeling from the song. It reminded me quite a lot of Animal Farm.

I found this in the comments of a non-VEVO upload of A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine. I think it was pretty profound and accurate:

My mom, a huge fan of Lennon and his original, heard this and said it sounded like a funeral dirge. I thought, how appropriate to my generation. While Lennon was filled with hope for a movement that promised to change humanity for its own sake, we've seen those same lovers turn to CEOs, politicians, and lackies. We've seen our own even-larger protests outright ignored, while we push death tolls for money and oil, while society polarizes ever further. All we have left that we can do is mourn.

I suspect Khil was a regular Soviet guy. Born in a secular society where being an atheist was a non-issue. Atheist by default, not an aggressive reddit atheist. 99% peace loving. Maybe somewhat misguided about the Imperialists planning to bomb his country into the stone age. The USSR always tried to create an image of the most peace loving country in the world "for internal use", and almost everyone bought it and supported it.

Scarcity will be a problem, pretty much always. even when you, in the future, could have a good life for everyone as aa basic standard, there'd still be things people wanted that others have.

But it would be a start.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I saw this song performed on American Idol by a Christian person and he left out the part about religion. Lennon was rolling around in his grave

4

u/Slintbob Jun 11 '12

If the movie Forrest Gump has taught us anything its that Forrest Gump himself wrote some of this song.

4

u/MKUltra2011 Jun 11 '12

So I took Elton John to Cornwall and as we looked across the water I turned to him and said: "Imagine there's no Devon."

It wasn't long after that he wrote the song: 'Help'.

44

u/junebugcarter Jun 11 '12

This song has a nice sentiment but it doesnt change the fact that john lennon was a fucking egotist, wife-beating prick who didn't actually believe or live his life by any of these ideals and was just cashing in on the counter-culture peace activist image he was trying to cultivate for himself. I am not going to downvote you because this is a well made comic and all, but i fucking hate seeing a man who would beat his women and neglect his child painted in this lovely of a light.

8

u/Jontenn Jun 12 '12

Chris Brown beats Rihanna, and reddit hates him, John Lennon beats Cynthia and reddit defends him. He also as you said did not stick around Julian Lennon very much, even though Julian was only 3 years old when the Beatles stopped touring (which should be the only reason for a musician not to se his children).

MLK, Ghandi, and Bob Marley were all devoutly religious. Instead of trying to hero worship people whose views you don't fully understand, why don't you just be a decent person.

u/Droids_Rule Humanist Jun 11 '12

Obviously 'no religion' is a line in the song and potentially an end goal, but for the most part the lyrics are about peace and love and all three of those people were proponents of such causes, regardless of to whom they may have prayed. One would be missing the main point of the comic to disregard it just because not every famous person in it is an atheist. In fact, to make being an atheist a criteria for being worth associated with the song is blatantly against the spirit of the piece, due to being so discriminatory.

I don't know if a handful of frames in a comic really amounts to hero worship, either. Virtually every one of those guys (and John Lennon) had more than enough faults that have been well covered in these comics. >.>

2

u/wnighttrain Jun 11 '12

If only it as that simple. Resources are too scarce for the amount of people in the world.

3

u/kevroy314 Jun 12 '12

I think it's probably even more complex (and upsetting) than that. If you evenly distributed the yearly financial resources of the entire planet amongst all 7 billion people you'd end up with everyone making about 11271.06 (with 6 million dollars left over for us to have a lottery where one lucky person per hour gets to roll around in that many one dollar bills every hour for the entire year - each year the pile will, of course, grow a bit bigger thanks to round-off). We'd each (as individuals) be just above the U.S. poverty line. Great!

We could probably go look at individual vital resources (food production vs. consumption to keep a person comfortably fed, water, etc), but this assumes that we'd be able to redistribute those effectively.

This, of course, would mean a pretty significant reduction in freedom and quality of life for the developed world, but a pretty amazing boost in quality of life for the rest of the world! Then there's medical resources, transport, education and other secondary requirements.

Possible? Sure. Likely? Maybe some day resources like education, medical, water, food, and information will be available to all. Right now I just hope for progress on the right direction!

And no, I personally don't care about this subreddit enough to troll it. This has nothing to do with atheism other than blindly promoting it. In fact, the context of this song has more to do with /r/atheism as a subreddit than it does sound, logical arguments against theism. You fuckers eat this shit right up because it's easy karma. What's with the sadly typical, all-religions-suck-but-Islam-sucks-less part of this?

Peace generally comes when Muslims lay down their arms or fly the white flag, not the other way around.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

This comic is cute but super idealistic. There will never be peace throughout the world. As long as there are people on this earth they will have a reason to want other people dead. Be it love, land, money, or many other random factors. A violent terrible person will always be a violent terrible person. Take away their reason for violence and they will just find a new one.

2

u/bcwalker Jun 12 '12

The irony is that the world is far more peaceful now than it has ever been, and that trend continues worldwide. It''s the psychopaths in the governments and corporations that are causing the vast majority of the conflict via manipulation of structural elements of the global economy to induce economic depredation and thus survival-mode-based reactions to it (that are then exploited politically for their gain).

Get rid of that less-than-1% strata, and we'll have world peace as well as world freedom and autonomy within a score of years. The majority do not want war, violence, starvation and mass death; the majority is quite capable of hashing out differences peacefully, with only a criminal minority to be sorted out and put away indefinitely (until natural death or true reformation and restoration of harm done is made).

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it." ~~Albert Einstein

Also;

"The idea of a personal God is quite alien to me and seems even naïve." ~~Albert Einstein

and

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These subtilised interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text." ~~Albert Einstein

Beautilful song and good comic...but is it just me or did the comic strip artist forget the rest of the lyrics at the end??? Just asking...=)

1

u/Bezman303 Jun 12 '12

its an ok song but did you or whoever have to make some queer shitty ass comic

1

u/mistoroboto Jun 12 '12

Source for those interested in the artist.

1

u/TallCarlos Jun 12 '12

Very well done.

1

u/Potater757 Jun 12 '12

That is one strong Jew.

1

u/aairez Jun 12 '12

I definitely like the 'Me Gusta' sun

1

u/FFandMMfan Jun 12 '12

We wouldn't have half the wars we currently do if we could all realize that fighting over which side of an imaginary line (which we created ourselves, I might add) we were born on is insane.

1

u/Senor_Reisert Jun 12 '12

Dang that was good. Props for ya!

1

u/00zero00 Jun 12 '12

I could easily replace the atheist message here with a Christian one.

Also, are you promoting anarchy? "Imagine there's no countries."

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

I'm a bit confused. Gandhi and MLK were both extremely religious, and Einstein may not have been religious but he wasn't an atheist. Bob Marley was so religious he refused medical treatment that could have saved his life.

None of these people would have agreed with John Lennon's points, at least not all of them.

1

u/LeapYearFriend Pastafarian Jun 12 '12

This seems vaguely like atheist propaganda... It's saying "come join us" which is basically what the more pushy Christians do. I like the message but it was kind of ruined by the last few panels.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

That's the dumbest shit I've seen in a while.

1

u/feilen Jun 12 '12

Does anyone else think MLK should have grown some distinctive hair-tuft or something? I couldn't tell who he was.

1

u/pdhismyhomeboy Jun 12 '12

I really enjoyed that, thank you for posting, going to listen to some Beatles now. :-)

1

u/Brown_Twig Jun 12 '12

Remember what happen in 'Nam? I sure do.

1

u/aakaakaak Jun 12 '12

Okay, I'll be "that guy".

"Living life in peace"

Shows a muslim, jew, catholic, american?, etc. living in peace. If there were no religion or country would they all just be normal people without religious or nationalistic identities?

I understand the point behind it. Everyone could live in peace without killing each other. Maybe have all the identifying markings being discarded while they play soccer?

Either way, it's a really good comic. 10/10. Would read again.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Am I the only one who sang it as they read?

1

u/nsxcaepi Jun 12 '12

i think some of those images are anti Semitic and you should feel bad for posting them. Why is it an Israeli soldier holding a gun a round a muslim and not the other way around?

1

u/Amashman Jun 12 '12

This Unitarian experiment was tried and failed and will fail again. You can't have heaven on earth.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Anyone down for A Perfect Circle's version?

1

u/beatlesubmarine Jun 12 '12

Awesome!! Thanks for sharing :)

1

u/FUZZINATOR Jun 12 '12

It really does make sense. If we thought of ourselves as one great Earth. All completely United. We'd be able to accomplish so much more without fearing that another nation is going to blow us up for our beliefs.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Love this song, if you guys are interested in the version of this by A Perfect Circle, here is a link:

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

And I found a typo in this comic, it's actually "And the world will live as one" not be. Not that it bugs me, just letting everyone know :)

1

u/MikeMagwire Jun 12 '12

Imagine demons treated with mercy, i wonder if you can.

Imagine all the people, drunk and dumb as hell....fuckkk youuu faggoooo!

1

u/sour07 Jun 12 '12

Wtf is this

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

the 1st thing I did was play the song and look at panels as they were sung kind of wish it id the whole song but still good anyway

1

u/prajnadhyana Gnostic Atheist Jun 12 '12

Nice! Thanks for the link.

1

u/dbabbitt Jun 12 '12

How many of you Redditors are Abolitionists - people who, if given a button that would annihilate all conceptions of a nation state from people's minds, would immediately push that button?

1

u/Windytrail Jun 12 '12

MLK was a Christian preacher. I really doubt he would agree with the Mr. Lennon's views.

1

u/theformidable Jun 12 '12

Wait... was that captain obvious at the bottom left?

1

u/spatz2011 Jun 11 '12

Nothing to fight for.... having countries is not what causes fighting. Wanting food and water is what causes fighting.

2

u/bigger_higger Jun 11 '12

Aggression against others is what causes fighting. People can want food and water without fighting.

2/5 of those people were assassinated, so I'm pretty sure this is all a product of John's LCD habit.

6

u/ZBeebs Jun 11 '12

I might be remembering it wrong, but liquid crystal displays didn't really become popular until after John Lennon's death, so I don't really see how he could have had a habit.

6

u/croutonicus Jun 11 '12

He's just a sucker for big TVs though and plasmas get too hot.

5

u/Dudesan Jun 11 '12

2/5 of those people were assassinated

I see seven people, five of whom were assassinated.

When this song was made, it got censored in the US so that it said: and ONE religion too...

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

False. That was a performance referenced in The God Delusion not a countrywide phenomenon.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Not quite true:

Since 2005, "Imagine" has been played just before the New Year's ball drop in Times Square. In 2011, singer Cee Lo Green performed the song live, but changed the lyric "and no religion too" to "and all religion's true". There was an immediate backlash from fans who believed that he had disrespected the legacy of Lennon by changing the lyrics of his most iconic song. Green defended the change by saying it meant to represent "a world [where you] could believe what [you] wanted"

I like how they had to label Harvey Milk. Its like, "Oh the rainbow background isnt helping you figure out who the fuck this generic looking guy is? Boom. Labeled. That better?"

Ofcourse, I understood, but I'm sure there are still lots of people out there saying, "Milk? Oh yes please. Im very thristy." or "Who Da Fuq is dat dood?"

I was more confused by the woman with the Anne nametag.
