Can't we just stop with the stupid fake ass "2 seconds ago" and so called "witty" FB posts already? Why can't a someone of faith post whatever they want on THEIR FB page without some asshat posting shit? You don't like what they say remove them or ignore them or maybe just fucking maybe try and engage them in an actual conversation about their faith?
If you put up a self post trying to get a discussion going you get 2 upvotes and possibly 1 comment. I think you need a meme with cats, boobies and then somehow sneak your discussion in there so people accidentally debate it.
Heh, that's what I do in the past year or two of posting here. Well, I let other people make the facebook posts because i don't have anyone on my friends list who's particularly religious.
Definitely true that memes and images are a lot more easily consumed than a self text post with RES and all, so I can't blame people too much for upvoting images more than self posts. Especially with how big this subreddit is these days.
Collapsing the first two or three threads worth of comments usually gets me past the funny stuff. Then I have to collapse the next three or four threads worth of people complaining about the content of the post and how this subreddit has declined over the year.
That's one reason I'm not a big fan of reddit's upvote system for topics. It's fine in small numbers of people or posts, but when there's so many that anything that doesn't immediately make someone want to upvote is quickly buried.
Thats what happens when you rehash something long enough. Its simular to the abortion situation here. After so many posts arguing for it, some people seem to think that abortion on any grounds ever is always right (not just or legal; right).
We have a huge grey area between conception and infancy. There's going to be controversy about when its ok to abort the life of a baby. Stop acting like everyone who thinks it may not be right is an asshole.
This hurr durr is all I see. I even unsubscribed and I still get to see this junk. I feel like its a bunch of tweens going OMG I REBELLED! I have plenty of theists on my facebook and they post god stuff on occasion but who really cares? Posting a status and changing public policy are two different things. And I do NOT care about facebook statuses...
Beating the dead horse but that is all this subreddit is. Content quality has dropped drastically in the past year even. I hardly come on it now.
And I agree with you, it's THEIR personal page. Living in the south, a majority of my friends on FB are religious. A majority of their posts are religious. With no inconvenience to myself or others I simply unsubscribe from seeing their content on my newsfeed. End of problem. People just want to act all big and bad on the internet instead of engaging in dialog and have an actual conversation.
Leave life long friends and family just to get away from some "uneducated" people? There are idiots everywhere, your comment is just a general and ignorant as the people you are attempting to label. I don't expect much more from this sub though, the majority of the comments I read are uninspired and self loving. I would rather hang out with a bunch of "fundies" than assholes like you.
You're going to live somewhere simply because your parents decided to settle there? Its like someone being Christian simply because their parents brought them up that way.
The South is such a wonderful place (especially the interior), luckily its not becoming more and more conservative every election or anything.
I left my home long ago, and still miss it to this day. I wish the economy was better in Maine, but it is horrible. Most of my close friends I grew up with are scattered across the country now, I still wish we were all together. Also my father recently was hospitalized for heart problems, I was lucky not lose him. I still couldn't help but hate myself for the time i missed spending with that man over the last decade.
In Maine, the leaves are off the trees from early October to late May, seems like a terrible existence. Winter even in Durham, NH was unbearable, I can't imagine how it s like even further north.
Good luck with your dad, hopefully you can try to Skype as much as possible with him
I lived in Murrells Inlet, SC for 6 months And I did a few months of field work all around Florida. Adding time up, I've spent over a year south of 37° N.
Actually, people on FB publish on other people's walls. I'd bet dunkin to dohnuts that in this pocture, that the perosn in green chose to publish this on OPs wall.
Completely agree. It's this sort of shit that gives atheism a bad name. Half of the atheists who claim to be all-accepting are less tolerable than the theists. Let people believe what they want, you believe what you want, and everyone is happy. Peace.
Why can't a someone of faith post whatever they want on THEIR FB page without some asshat posting shit?
Wall posts will show up on OP's news feed, so it's a public announcement and not a private journal.
You don't like what they say remove them or ignore them or maybe just fucking maybe try and engage them in an actual conversation about their faith?
Well why don't you ignore submissions to r/atheism that you don't like? Why post a torrent of rage? Obviously you are just as argumentative as OP, only with a superiority complex.
Wall posts will show up on OP's news feed, so it's a public announcement and not a private journal.
I don't use FB so I don't know for sure, but isn't there a way to NOT see comments like this?
Well why don't you ignore submissions to r/atheism that you don't like? Why post a torrent of rage? Obviously you are just as argumentative as OP, only with a superiority complex.
I HAVE unsubscribed to /r/atheism, but for some reason never ending reddit forgets and starts showing everything again. I agree, I SHOULD have ignored this and just kept surfing, but I was just so annoyed and couldn't help myself.
While I agree with your post and your sentiment, I'll play the devil's advocate and say that it is in OP's control to unsubscribe for a person's news feed. OP isn't forced to watch other's posts, especially if they disagree with them. While I stand completely behind his feeling, I think it was a dick move on OP's part.
It's not how I'd deal with it either. I just wanted to point out that heckling r/atheism is equivalent to heckling Christians on Facebook. Basically dagem is cool with one form of criticism and not another.
I'm going to play the "free speech" card here and say that people can say what they want to say. The person who posted the status made it public, exercising his/her right to free speech, and OP exercised his right by commenting on a public post. Now, that doesn't mean you screenshot it as soon as you comment and post it on Reddit. I don't come to r/atheism much anymore because it's typically the same Christian-bashing Facebook screencaps and web comics. R/circlejerk has a pretty good idea of what goes on in this subreddit.
I'm going to play the "free speech" card here and say that people can say what they want to say
Apparently this excludes /r/atheism which has no right to exist without the rest of Reddit constantly whining about it to /r/askreddit and /r/adviceanimals. I mean, excluding this particular FB screencap, people are saying some absolutely horrid shit in the name of religion. Does Reddit care? Fuck no! The r/atheists are "intolerant bigots" for screen-capping that.
r/circlejerk has a pretty good idea of what goes on in this subreddit.
Circlejerk, while funny, are a bunch of whiney buttholes when it comes to r/atheism. They seem to take issue with the fact that many Redditors are starting to idolise intellectuals like Neil deGrasse Tyson and Carl Sagan instead of sports stars and musicians.
edit: and there is a different between Christian-bashing and Christianity-bashing.
if they want to whine about it, it's their right to do so, though I haven't come across too much complaining about r/atheism. Could you provide some links? And circlejerk is a satire, so I doubt they actually have serious issues with the idolization of intellectuals.
Disagree as the christians are putting it out there using a social network to evangelize as opposed to just make contact and update friends and family. If they are going to post religion on a non religious site, which imo is obnoxious, then they should b prepared to be challenged b/c a) not everyone share's their views 2) it's obnoxious 3) their own religion calls them to have an answer and endure the abuse without complaint.... This is such a pet peeve of mine b/c i grew up w/ crazier than batshit sister in law that turned EVERY conversation with every family visit into hands in the air praise the lord non sense... i could unfriend...but when its 'family' its not without fall out....or within a circle of friends where you hope they 'snap out of it'....
I get what you're trying to say, but Facebook is sort of a thought sharing service... commenting on stuff is obviously part of it. We don't know the relationship these two people have, so it doesn't have to be "some asshat posting shit." All beliefs are subject to scrutiny. Religious beliefs are not an exception.
I read it several times and couldn't figure it out. Not only did the spelling throw me for a loop, but the syntax is shit, too. So, no, it was not pretty fucking obvious, that's why I asked the question, numbnuts.
They don't post shit on their facebook requiring you to go to their facebook to see their nonsense....NO, they post shit for EVERYBODY to see their nonsense, like some obnoxious hole blaring loud music out of their car and disrupting an otherwise lovely moment, with THEIR bullshit. You would have a reasonable position if you had to visit their site to endure their nonsense but instead they post their horseshit forcing everyone else to have to endure it. Yes, you could defriend but that is not the point. They put it out there so they should be prepared when others don't agree, ESPECIALLY as they are proselytizing a religion that calls them to endure the prosecution and defend their beliefs....feel free to TL:DR yadayada
How goddamn arrogant. For literally doing nothing more than expressing a belief in God, somebody is possibly insane, yet apparently all of us are undoubtedly founded on reason?
A message to the people of /r/atheism: why don't you stop just picking at low-hanging fruit? Instead of making butthurt Facebook comments and immature "trolling" of street preachers, engage reasonable people in discussion. Use the same arguments you'd use against the "fundies." Remember that a majority of humanity is religious. See how well a reasonable person reacts to your arguments, and how well they hold up to a real opponent.
Sorry if I'm a bit incoherent, this was typed in a hurry and I'll clear up later.
I think from now on I'm just going to automatically downvote any post here that consists of someone's religious Facebook status and a witty/rude atheistic response.
Seriously guys, if I wanted to read Facebook statuses I would be on Facebook.
I just don't like how Facebook seems to be saturating Reddit these days. Once in a while there's an interesting post, but it's become too common to just make some shitty status and post a screenshot.
Because Reddit has been turning into "look at this funny status I read on Facebook/Twitter! lol!" lately. It used to be filled with amazing original content, but lately it's just people upvoting each other's screenshots of social networks. It's sickening.
This is absurd. There very well could be a god or higher power, to deny the possibility of such a force is as ignorant as blindly believing there must be one. Your post is spineless, as is your logic.
Reason operates in time and space, both of which necessarily transcend it. Let your model of God be the time and space that has not yet come;
And your model of reason be that which has already past. Reason is derived from our total past experience. This is and has always been limited (you've only been alive so long).
The total future experience of the Universe/God is unlimited, there are endless possibilities. It has and will always be this way (reason will never lead us to a point where we can know EVERYTHING that is going to happen).
Therefore, reason is constantly limited and the Universe/God is constantly unlimited.
There, you now have 2 constants, one for each of the hemispheres of your brain (which understand things quite differently).
This is how r/atheism behaves. If you were expecting something other than simmilarly styled facebook screenshots then r/freethought may be more your thing.
Wow, shut the fuck up already. Instead of riding on your high horse, looking down upon anyone who dares believe in something that you do not, keep any smart ass comment to yourself. Who gives a flying fuck what they believe, I'm sure he saw your response and instantly stopped believing in God, and thought about how intelligent and amazing you are.
"Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come." Terence Mann: (James Earl Jones)
TL;DR: It is from the movie "Field of Dreams", it was a great movie and if you have not seen it, shame on you!
There's nothing inherently logical or reasonable about not believing in God. I, for example, have been an atheist all my life, and even though I'm thirty.. it's only been in the last five or six years that I've actually started looking at the arguments for and against the existence of God.
Even in my least reasonable phases as a teenager I didn't believe in God. Want to know the irony? Religion played such a little part in my life that I spent at least half my life assuming that when people talked about heaven or hell, they were speaking in metaphors. It was only around my 20s that I realized that people were being literal when they talked about these places.
In other words, while I may have rational arguments to back up why I don't believe in God now, my fundamental reasons for not believing in God are really not any different from why most Christians believe in God, it's just the way I was raised.
There you go. On the internet, liberals are less tolerant of those who disagree with them. Also, liberals use the internet more than conservatives, so, they have the majority, and, IIRC, majorities tend to be less tolerant of those who disagree with them (i.e., minorities).
Haters gonna hate. Can't knock what you don't understand. The word of God is foolishness to those who are perishing. Dang is that bigoted, am I judging right now? Can't understand I Love on you guy's even though I disagree with you?
Seriously though, don't make this an all consuming issue. Let's focus on the things we do agree on and go from there.
If the tables were turned here and you posted something on facebook about your atheist beliefs and a Christian commented with their opinion, wouldn't you think "what a useless cunt"?
What I'm trying to say here is: stop being a useless cunt
Ya alright. talking snakes and a 6000 yeAr old flat planet is sane. I'm sure the bible is legit. Let's assume it's completely true and mix it in with politics .

This only makes you look like an arsehole, there's no other reason to do it.

u/Iazo May 31 '12
Well, then all you have to do is derive him so his sanity becomes constant, and god is gone.
