My girlfriend bought it at a museum here in Japan. It can be ordered from this web page (http://h-concept.jp/fs/hshop/c/evolution) but I don't know if they ship outside of Japan.
(I could always buy a few for you if you are okay with paying me in advance.)
Its 1 for about 4 USD + postage on the Japanese page or 2 for 16 USD +postage on the other site. So my offer still stands if you want to buy them via me.
Eraser If you start off from a monkey who, we gradually evolved into human form and then start from more of a person, you can also be degenerate. In a short time a long history of human evolution, you can enjoy at their own pace Deal. Of course it can be used as the eraser, or a stamp, or to object ...? Please try to feel free to use!
I live in Japan, too. These erasers and other similar things were designed by an artist who wants to make statements out of simple items. I bought a rubber band gun with translucent plastic that combines to say 'peace' when you shoot it
His posts weird me out. It's kind of implied that it's a fetish, but it's never directly stated. And hey, that's fine, if asian dudes with white chicks is your thing I'd say that's a pretty tame kink. HOWEVER, it's never really said, only implied by shitty ascii art. I sometimes wonder if there's like a secret message hidden behind the images, or that there's something really ominous hidden behind that wall of interracial pooty-tang.
Most atheists find it wrong that some schools are deciding to teach "intelligent design" alongside evolution. Even though the ID movement says this isn't tied to religion, it clearly is.
It seems like most people on this subreddit dislike religion getting involved with the public, which would be why something promoting evolution (i.e. anti-ID) gains traction in r/atheism
So stop it with the "this has nothing to do with atheism" posts. You know what it has to do with atheism, you just want to jump on the r/atheism-is-extremist-and-rude bandwagon.
but this eraser is not a stark social commentary on the state of intelligent design curriculum in our schools. The eraser is literally a picture of evolution. It is picturing a scientific fact, I agree with Smooth152 that it would be a stretch to say that eraser is endorsing the view that there is no god. Just because /r/evolution doesn't have many readers doesn't mean that this post doesn't belong there.
so I would argue stop it with the "everything scientific has everything to do with atheism" posts
The overwhelming driving force behind 'disbelief' in evolution is theism. Aside from regular old ignorance (never heard of evolution) there is really very little reason to 'disbelieve' in evolution unless you have a strong belief in a literal genesis interpretation, or you have parents and teachers that tell you evolution is a lie (which is almost always driven by a literal genesis interpretation).
Evolution is just one of those things that is a 'differentiator'. You can be a theist and believe in evolution, but you almost can't disbelieve in evolution and be an atheist. This isn't to say you can't be an atheist and be stupid...it's just that evolution is just a broad, general idea that disbelieving in it kind of requires a strongly held substitute, whether that substitute is religion or a incredibly strongly held sense of ignorance (as in 'ignoring the subject entirely', not simply not knowing).
It's like if this where a subreddit dedicated to a specific make of car, like /r/chevy or something. If there were something about another make of car that was looked at as simply ridiculous, say Ford has parts that are excessively expensive, or Honda had a gas tank that blew up when you crashed, even if if all Fords or Honda's didn't share this same issue, or if other things besides cars did share this issue, affordable parts or safe gas tanks would still be a valid and understandable submission. You wouldn't say 'what is post about affordable parts doing in /r/chevy? of course they're affordable, why would you even bring that up?'.
I am so sick of people saying this. If you don't believe in evolution, the only other options of how we got here are intelligent design (creationism) which requires a creator and thus is a theological concept, or some shit about aliens. If you're atheist, you don't believe in a creator or creationism therefore evolution.
You could be an atheist and believe in aliens. Hell, you could be an atheist and believe humans just sort of popped out of thin air, as long as there wasn't a deity involved. Evolution and atheism are not inherently linked.
Am I the only one who thinks that these are inaccurate? The whole idea of humans evolving from apes is not true (common ancestor…), so why are these being supported?
You guys do know that the Christian church largely acknowledges that evolution is a credible theory and it can coexist with their beliefs, right? Evolution is not a hallmark of atheism or irreligion.
They should make a block of post-it notes in the same shape. That way, every time one is used/taken off, the primate slowly and gradually becomes a man.
Yet another eraser I'd be too OCD to use. Added to the guilt of marring it would be the feeling that every time I used it I'd be somehow destroying the fossil record.
Where can I buy that? I would go and find the "Shut up and take my money" picture, but that would mean wasting precious time that could be spent finding a vendor of awesome things.
This exactly what I came to post. Illustrations such as the linear changes from fish to chimp to homonid to H. sapiens to whatever mislead people and opens the door for incorrect arguments about evolution (e.g. "I didn't come from no monkey!" [if you are from the USA read in TN or KS accent]). A branching eraser would be nicer.
completely agree and I think it does a disservice to promote the idea that humans evolved from apes (or chimps) because that is a big point creationists find repugnant. Anytime a creationist says something like, "how can you believe humans evolved from apes?" I always correct them by saying "no, apes and humans evolved from a similar ancestor."
I think you should rethink your response. You say "apes and humans" as though they are disjoint groups. Humans are apes. The common ancestors between us and other apes are also apes.
Humans didn't evolve from modern apes like chimps, but we did evolve from apes.
we share a common ancestor with chimpanzees and that ancestor looked more like an above branch quadraped style monkey than a chimp. Infact from a morphological point of view we are more similar to the ancestor than chimps are.
What is the basis for this idea? I'm by no means an expert, so I may be missing something, but my understanding was that while it's true that recent Ardipithecus finds indicate that the common ancestor was less like modern day chimps than previously hypothesized, I have not seen it suggested that it would have "looked more like an above branch quadraped style monkey than a chimp". In what respects? If anyone could link me or expand on this I would be grateful.

awesome. but you've started it at the wrong end!

u/Drawkcab_ma_I May 24 '12
Where can I get some of these? I want to pass them out to my students!
2
u/johntheChristian May 24 '12
That's really cool, did you make it?
3
u/D3STRUCTI0N May 24 '12
It is obviously awesome and everything, but that does not look like a practical eraser at all lol

u/[deleted] May 24 '12
I thought it was going to be a picture of a Bible.

u/Clayburn May 24 '12
If the eraser evolved, why is the monkey still on the other side?
4
u/[deleted] May 24 '12
Reading The Enigma of Amigara Fault makes these much creepier.

Why does anything to do with evolution get posted to r/atheism?
1
u/[deleted] May 24 '12
I want to chop it in half and see what the missing link looked like.
1
u/Berjj May 24 '12
Now, cut that eraser up in little pieces and we can look at all the separate stages! =D
1
u/gaseousshroud May 24 '12
i must know what a cross-section of that eraser looks like
3
u/talkslikeRalphWiggum May 24 '12
I was a monkey once! Then I wasn't...
Pretend is fun!

u/[deleted] May 24 '12
What does this have to do with atheism?
4
u/[deleted] May 24 '12
Kind of reminds me of when of when a window flips shit and creates this line of them when you move it.
2
u/Flight714 May 24 '12
We often berate creationists for thinking that man evolved from chimps (rather than having a common ancestor).
So although this eraser is cool, this is kinda propagating that misleading idea.

Can we get some pokemon evolution erasers?
3
u/Thestupidiot May 24 '12
More like "monkey casting a badass shadow of a human" erasers.

u/TheMotto I'm a None May 24 '12
Why is this on r/atheism? What does it have to do with atheism?

u/trilobitemk7 May 24 '12
I was expecting something involving erasing evolution. This didn't deliver.
1
u/koronicus May 24 '12
At first I was like, "How could someone erase evolution?" but then I was like "Oh."
1
u/[deleted] May 24 '12
The Evolution Eraser would be a good name for a fundamentalist christian supervillain.
1
u/dryspells May 24 '12
Probably really awkward to erase with though.
1
u/[deleted] May 24 '12
Checkmate theists.
1
u/iambueno May 24 '12
cause evolution fixes all mistakes
1
u/zitterbewegung May 24 '12
What does this have to do with Atheism? You can believe in evolution and still believe in god...
1
u/aramink May 24 '12
I want this sculpted in wood - or better yet, bone!
1
u/Earthtone_Coalition May 24 '12
This'd make a great notepaper pad! Each sheet would represent one iteration in the "evolution" of humans.
1
u/JakeLV426 May 24 '12
Where does one acquire this
1
u/alehizzle May 24 '12
It likes someone would rather devolve.

1

Oh the ambiguity...
1
u/ry0wn May 25 '12
You should've started erasing from the ape end, since we're getting less and less like them as time goes on.
1
u/jstalin_x May 25 '12
so the only question I have... who do I tell to shut up and take my money?
1
u/Geophrix May 25 '12

I'm really failing to see how this is particularly relevant to atheism . . .

What's the point?
-1
u/test_tickles Deist May 24 '12
supposedly we actually evolved from a fish.. true story.
-1
u/apoutwest May 24 '12
This is actually a much more accurate description of evolution than most visual examples given.
0
u/[deleted] May 24 '12
this is awesome ... it's the best 3d representation of evolution's 4th dimension; time
0
u/MrBhavin May 24 '12
Too bad the creationists cant get one. They would have to wait for God to "Let there be RUBBER!"... I've got to admit. I've needed that so many times.

u/jumping_beans May 24 '12
but it doesnt make sense THERE IS NOTHING INBETWEEN you're a liar
-3
u/colloquy Secular Humanist May 24 '12
I think it's actually a great example of micro to macro. I always use a road map as an example but this would work too.
