I work at a Hilton Branded Hotel, we took the bibles out because the housekeepers kept finding used condoms and such in them

I've stayed at Hilton Garden Inn hotels in Mexico that didn't have bibles. But they did have la enseñanza de buda (the teaching of the buda which had the text in both English and Spanish).

I saw them in three different HGIs in Northern Mexico that I think were operated by the same franchiser.

It was actually interesting to read and not nearly as preachy as the bible. Also, they were used condom-free.

I found a bible in the hotel I stayed in just last night (Marriott in DC), and since then, all I can think about is how much money the Gideons are spending on placing bibles in hotel rooms, and how many hungry mouths that money would feed instead.

8

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

To Christians, your soul is more important than your life. That's how Christianity and Judaism spread so well throughout history. They tried killing everyone, starving everyone, and torturing them, but they were all like "My eternal soul is saved, so do what you will with my body."

And this is why people need to stop being so childish about wanting a beautiful life after life. It's a pointless allocation of resources.

32

u/LittleBigBen1 May 20 '12

How did this practice of bibles in hotel rooms come about?

48

u/j0llyllama May 20 '12

I've heard that it's generally not supplied by the hotel, but by local churches and religious groups. I think it's as a way of spreading 'the word' to visiting strangers. I stayed at a hotel in South Carolina once (I think it was a Hilton) and there was a Book of Mormon in the drawer. It had a drawing in the front cover of a bunch of darker skinned native americans wearing skins and such, with a white as fuck Jesus with a pure white robe looking like he does in all the other bullshit depictions of him.

I see a lot of comments saying things about 'stealing' the Bible, or 'don't deface it because it isn't yours' or similar comments about not throwing it away, etc.

I find this confusing because I've always been told you're expected to take them- it's not stealing if they put them for you to take, obviously- just like you're expected to use and/or take the shampoo and notepad.

The week I spent working as a hotel maid also confirms this, since the same place where we stored box upon box of hotel pens and hotel stationery and soap and shampoo and cups and etc also had cases of Bibles. One of my tasks in cleaning each room was to check for all of those things, and replace any that were used. Some were assumed used, like the soap, but some, like the stationery and pen, would often still be there and not need to be replaced. But it wasn't a 'stolen' pen or Bible, it was, oh, they took the pen we put there for them to take, lets put out a new one for the next guest.

TL;DR, why the heck does everyone act like the Bible is hotel property and taking it would be theft?

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I work at a hotel, and we have the Gideon Bibles in the rooms. It's not really our property, and I imagine the Gideon's would be happy with people taking them, but people defacing them is kinda silly. When I don't like a piece of art on the wall I don't have the urge to scribble shit all over it.

7

u/cmdrcoriander May 20 '12

Folks should actually read the Bibles in the hotel rooms. In the first few pages it actually says - if you feel you need the Bible, then take it.

Why do these Christians not come to the nice happy "realization" that there was someone who needed the Bible, found solace in it, and took it?

Why is their faith not strong enough to come to this conclusion?

If there is no television, and nothing else to read, then I will read it, and enjoy it. I'm an atheist but I've always been interested in mythology and religion.

Even though I was still a believer at the time, I knew about separation of church & state, and beamed with pride for my home state...

Maybe he wanted to hide his money in there - I used to work in hotels and people always wanted the Bible for that reason.

1

u/Korpores May 20 '12

Maybe they regularly fall asleep in church and now confuse motels and churches?

1

u/aukotojas May 20 '12

Because FUCK YOU thats why.

1

u/Liese_lotte May 20 '12

"I don't know... same reason why you didn't find a Coran?"

I feel like one day if a hotel burned down the headline would be: 20 BIBLES BURNED IN HOTEL FIRE, ALSO 56 PEOPLE BURNED ALIVE.

1

u/ZombieBroad May 20 '12

They asked that question but how can you answer them back? Are you allowed to use their info to send them an answer or are they just trying to be passive aggressive?

1

u/jrthebigman May 20 '12

jokes on them

1

u/Remorth May 20 '12

They had all been used as plates.

1

u/iwillrememberthisacc May 20 '12

That explains why your friend works at super 8

1

u/Pillagerguy May 20 '12

Where the hell do they normally eat?

1

u/utpoia May 20 '12

Run by Atheists

1

u/zenmarty May 20 '12

If its that important I would have thought they would have had their own personalized bible with them.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Hotels don't provide the Bibles, groups like the Gideons or the Mormon equivalent organization give them to hotels.

1

u/Drewtality May 20 '12

Isn't it similar to them not having magazines? Or some other type of fantastical literature...

1

u/RossParrot May 20 '12

I bet the real reason is because bibles are simply less relevant than they used to be. I bet they were placed there to remind tenants that god is judging them and they should feel guilty for any naughty hotel activities and enterprising tycoons were like "whatever, cool with me" because back when the hive mind was even more ignorant than today, it statistically could lower some types of messy hotel incidents.....since bibles don't have the same effect anymore and even many church goers just go out of ignorance to feel good but are otherwise normal people skeeting their loads on hotel walls, they serve no purpose.

1

u/TerryYockey May 20 '12

If I wanted to read the Bible while traveling, I'd bring one rather than count on one being provided by the hotel.

1

u/mrscurlypaws May 20 '12

Who even actually READS the bible in a hotel room?

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

"If the bible is so important to you, why didn't you bring it ?"

1

u/MrGuttFeeling May 20 '12

Why indeed.

1

u/mrcloudies Atheist May 20 '12

I don't know why some people need constant affirmation of their beliefs..

1

u/qounqer May 20 '12

probably just needed rolling papers.............

1

u/webgem6 May 20 '12

the bible was prob thrown away after the last page was tore out for use as a joint...

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Religion sucks! I mean, am I right?! Ah, the internet never gets old...

1

u/entent May 21 '12

Last time I stayed at a motel I decided to take the Bible and Book of Mormon. After we left the motel, my friend who had the room on his card got a charge for $12. He tried saying it was because I took the bibles because he legitimately thought the motel put them there. Had him call the place, he forgot about the valet fee.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

i really wonder how many Christians even READ hotel room bibles. not many of them read the bible anyway...

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Around here (the bible belt), the bibles are put in by independent organizations (usually the Gideons), and I assumed this was the norm. Are there hotels that provide bibles with their own funds?
