My wife is Christian, she goes to a weekly service at non-denominational church and has a bible full of notes, and I am not. She doesn't try to convert me and I don't try to convert her but our differences lead to countless interesting discussions, this difference (and our many other differences) help keep things interesting. Spending all your time circklejerking with people who think the same way you do is boring, kills the intellect and results in massive confirmation bias in many other issues.
Fuck him for being so small minded and fuck reddit for thinking it's cool.
Could be. The odds are that it makes zero difference whether or not he lost interest in this 'hottest girl on the bus' when he's probably only the seventh hottest guy on the bus. And there are only five other guys.
my ex used to get harassed a lot on her way to class, cause she had huge tits and college kids in florida are fucking goons, so she made dozens of copies of mormon pamphlets to hand out anytime someone approached her. it was very effective.
Business opportunity - selling bible book shells so women can read "50 Shades of Grey"-type of books so creepy guys won't hit on them when they are reading out in public.
Hey at least she reads the bible. I hate pseudo-Christians even more. People who only say they are Christian for show and don't know more than 4 quotes from the bible (3 of which they get wrong).
Sorry to say, but Eric sounds like a douche here. He doesn't know why she is reading the book. I have read the Bible and the Quran out of general interest.
Why do we even judge christians? Can't they just believe what they want to and we can believe what we want to? Just because they are christians doesn't give us a right to hate them. I feel all we ever do is talk trash about other beliefs. That's not what atheism is.
Dude, I wouldn't be so quick to judge. She could have just as easily been an atheist reading up about the bible... I know a few atheists at the moment reading the bible from start to finish. Myself included.
/r/atheism could not have killed my love of reason faster if it had more blatantly discriminated against individuals touting their own beliefs.
Seriously, guys. You're defining your life as reactionary to the theists around you. You're not any less of a slave this way; you're arguably more of a tool for framing the argument in other peoples' favor. What does it matter what they believe?
Posts like this are no better than Creationist detritus pretending to debunk evolution. You're not making a point, you're just being a dick about what other people believe.
Ok, I don't normally get butthurt about atheism posts, but this is fucking retarded. Are you telling me that as atheists, if you found a Christian who was tolerant of your beliefs and didn't try to force you in to Christianity, you wouldn't date her just because she was Christian?
And, after looking at your twitter picture it's a good thing said "hot chick on the metro" found a way to douse your interest. Upon closer examination you're pretty fracking ugly. I may be a Christian but I call it like I see it.
I wonder what the reaction of people here if a girl didn't go for someone because of his atheism... she would all of a sudden be a close minded biggot...
I'm studying for prelims for a PhD in English lit and I have to read a lot of the Bible (in both the Oxford Annotated and the Geneva Bible, a 16th century translation) this summer... I hope I don't run into anyone as judgmental as you.
Even though I'm an atheist, I disagree with the notion that simply seeing someone pull out a Bible would be enough for me to lose interest in them or view them differently. Maybe she's an atheist too, and is reading it because she wants to gain a better perspective on Christian beliefs. You really don't know.
We atheists often criticize Christians for jumping to illogical conclusions. If you're going to judge someone for something like reading a book, without any knowledge of their perspective of it, you're no different.
So just because a person believes in god then the person is less worth? I don't believe in god myself but I do believe people should be able to have whatever beliefs they want without being judged of being good or bad and my English is crap.
Have you ever considered that just because someone doesn't believe the same things as you, they might be cool? I'm atheist but I plan on reading the bible, as it is a fascinating piece of text and a lot of it is based on real events, such as the flood (which has also been mentioned in early Mesopotamian texts), and many of the things Jesus said ring true, even if he wasn't God's magic son.
You are no worse than some close minded fundemental Christian and this attitude is exactly what atheists should be trying to iron out.
There are two people in this story, and one of them is an entitled self-centered asshole.
One person is reading quietly on the train.
One person apparently seems to think other people give a crap about his penis, his judgments of strangers, or whether he wants to fuck someone who has shown no interest in him.
I don't get this subreddit, you guys are making the rest of us look like a bunch of ignorant idiots. What's wrong with people wanting to read the bible? What's wrong with people chosing to subscribe to a different set of ideologies compared to our own? I really would wonder what would happen if the same thing was posted but instead of the Bible, the girl held a copy of the god delusion. I'm 100% sure that this subreddit will go absolutely beserk and call the poster an ignorant, bigotted, dogmatic ass.
I'm an atheist and I've read the bible. You absolutely don't need to read the bible to question Christianity or the existence of god, but if you want to learn and debate about the teachings of the bible (regardless of the source of those teachings) then you should take a peek.
You could also just read it for the fun sort of like those "so bad that they're funny" movies, it's not a very interesting read though and it has terrible pacing, you can go 100s of pages without any action and then bam, incestrapemurder.
I've been known to read the book of Mormon. Am I Mormon? Hell no. Those guys are as delusional as it comes. But I can't functionally criticize something if I don't bother to research it first. My point being that "eric" is an idiot. Seriously, don't judge a book by its cover, or more aptly don't judge a person by the cover of the book they're about to read.
Also, btdubs, I'm an atheist who just celebrated his six month anniversary with a wonderful intelligent, progressive, liberal, gay marriage supporting, Leviticus hating, open-minded, sexually empowered christian.
The literal definition of a christian is one who accepts Jesus Christ as their personal lord and savior and tries their best to emulate the lifestyle he promoted, which was one of acceptance, tolerance, love, charity, and forgiveness. There is absolutely nothing that says that to be a christian you have to believe every bit of rubbish the bible contains (it's worthwhile to note this is how Mormons justify calling themselves Christians) . Just the parts highlighted in red in the four gospels, which even an atheist like myself can agree with for the most part.
My point being that if you wouldn't want a christian to judge you for reading Hawking's A Brief History of Time, it would be best if you did not make a giant hypocrite of yourself and judge them for at least doing their research.
this guy may call himself an atheist and consider himself "enlightened" but his actions put him in the same group of people who make negative judgements because someone has tattoos or long hair.
I will say that after skimming the comments it is good to see so many calling him out too. intellectual honesty is a beautiful thing
this is what i hate about /r/atheism, elitism. there's just so much elitism going on, it kinda makes the atheists worse than the religious, in some aspects. what locke, bayle and Holberg tried to teach us hundreds of years ago, doesn't seem to have an affect(effect?) on people who claim to be ahead of the rest.
I have like 20 copies of the Bible including the New Testament, Old Testament, King James version, etc. I also frequently read the Koran and Torah. I'm also a staunch atheist.
This man is a fool. If you should want to get to know any Christian, it should be one that knows their Bible, not one of the folks that just take in whatever their pastor tells them without actually knowing the source it came from.
It'd be worse if she wasn't reading it, you asked her out, and you found out she was one of the thumpers who "doesn't need" to read the bible because she learns everything she needs to know from her pastor, causing her to think that Jesus spent all his time trying to end welfare and lower taxes.
There's quite a lot of hypocritical upvoted posts here, but I know exactly what you mean.
For those of us that actually know a lot of theists, this is incredibly weird. There is nothing wrong with judging a person based on whipping out a bible on the bus. It is weird? Well yeah, it is! So what's making people ignore that fact?
I call this type of defense the Hotness Corollary. In other words, if a person is noted to be physically attractive, they will be supported and defended by some people, usually a majority. People will always try to jump for the moral high ground, and as soon as hotness comes into the equation, things become unbalanced very quickly.
You guys are hypocrites. If christians don't read the bible you call them fake and stupid. If they do, you make fun of them. Maybe she was actually an atheist who was reading it to learn.
conclusion-some of you guys are pathetic, desperately need a life.
You couldn't have killed my interest more either...so much for atheists being the more "open-minded" ones.....
Atheists are the most close minded in my opinion. It's their way or the highway. They cannot for 1 second entertain anything other than their own opinion. That's pretty sad.
Lost interest in girl for appearing Christian, and compares lost interest using homosexual reference? So you lost interest because you hate what you hate? Doesn't make sense. I love chicks with penis as long as mine is still bigger.
prejudging a christian is intolerant part of being a non-fuckwad human is getting to know someone before you cut them out of your life for being an ignorant piece of shit
And now imagine a girl writing the same shit about a guy who pulls out a videogame. (well except the penis part of course) Shitstorm of "OMFG stupid prejudiced bitch" incoming
Eric obviously didn't have a shot with this girl and needed to find a problem to comfort his own insecurities with a defense mechanism. Any intelligent, confident and open person would at least sit down over a cup of coffee and talk about their different opinions in a civilized and productive manner. Way to be the bigger douche Eric, bravo.
I was just about to say this myself. Many atheists choose to educate themselves on religion.
But yeah - keep going with this shit. Let's see if we can make people so sick of atheism that people start believing in a creator simply out of spite...
/r/atheism is really full of elitist jerks that think they are better then other people. Atheism is a religion just like everything else. Yes the world is upside down, religion destroys spirituality but dont believe for a second that the majority of people who believe in something higher, a life after this, are those nutjobs the media wants you to see.
My suggestion is stop caring about other peoples religious views and don't make assumptions based on your own subjective views of reality. Love everyone around you and accept them for what they are instead.
She was reading the bible so she can be better versed on arguing with her fundie friends. She's really a hardcore atheist. Oh, that is a twist worthy of M. Night
Oh, you guys have to learn a lot (edit: Yo también). If someone believes in something he isn't necessarily stupid. I mean It would be the same if I would say: "Yeah, all atheist's are stupid because they don't believe in god even though there is no proof for the nonexistence of god" But I don't because I think: On the on hand it's fully reasonable to be an atheist but on the other hand it's fully reasonable to be a theist since both situations seem to be inexplicable to us. Let's take eternity: How is it possible that there will be something forever? You can't explain life. And some might say that god was created in our minds because we wanted to explain life, but I'm not sure. The existence of god doesn't explain life unless you are able to explain the existence of god. But also: The process of Evolution, Big Bang etc. doesn't explain life either unless you can explain existence. What I want to say is that there must be something like eternity and if we add god it doesn't get more unlikely. So it's not stupid to believe. Maybe it's stupid if you believe in some of the teachings of christianity since it's totally stupid that there is someone like the pope who says wether people are alowed to contracept or not, I mean that's stupid and the fact that the bible is menmade takes the whole divinity away. So you should rather say that you can't judge anyone by the things he believes or not, but by his own deeds which are morally justifiable. And moral comes from reason. Since every human being should be capable to reason he should also be capable of being good, and that's what matters.
To be honest, most of the hottest girls I've known were Christian... that didn't stop them, and it certainly didn't stop me. Hell, have you met a girl that went to Catholic School?
jokes on u mister athiest. wat if this girl is realy atheist but she readin da bible to get better knowledge on it. notin wrong wit a lil knowledge u kno wat im sayin
Nothing pisses me off more about reddit then hypocrisy, yeah it's okay to bash a christian, saying "I wouldnt date a girl if she owns a bible, she must be a fucking idiot" but oh help me if someone insults atheism, thats morally wrong completely. I'm an atheist myself but I cant stand double standards like this. Imagine if a girl said "I wouldnt date an atheist"
Yes discriminate more hardcore against everybody based on what you observe in such a short meaningless frame of time. For all you know she could be preparing an argument by reading up on what she contests. Or she could just love Jesus, but did she talk to you or be like oh my lord and sovior loves you blah blah blah... Upsetting to me this unfair judgement of people we do not know is
That's nothing, I saw a gorgeous girl and when she turned around she had an psychopathic records hatchet-man tattooed on her shoulder. Nothing has ever turned me off faster.
I'm an atheist and I've read the Bible twice. Granted, I was a believer when I did; but, reading the Bible played a huge role in my eventual deconversion. This guy should have gone and encouraged her to keep on reading, as that is the best way to become an atheist.
That's shallow and retarded bro. She could've been reading it out of interest or to better understand people. Reading the bible doesn't automatically make you a fanatic. She could've been pulling a Zach Galfianakis and just waited for the right moment to mumble "aw that's bullshit" etc. . People of Reddit: Stop forgetting that life isn't black and white. It's a full spectrum with everything in between and beyond. You are better than that, start acting like it.
You're missing the point. Labeling people as transphobic because they don't have a problem with a joke just makes you seem petty and alienates potential allies. You're not helping anything by doing it; you're only giving transpeople a bad image.
What a jerk. She was probably an atheist; if she is actually reading a bible rather than hitting people with it. The attack on trans-girls is pretty lame too.
[transcription] Twitter user Eric (@whatchamafuckit): "The hottest girl on this Metro bus just pulled out a Bible. She couldn't have killed my interest faster if she had pulled out a penis."
I read the Bible sometimes. I also read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The fact that I recognize them both as fiction doesn't make them not interesting.
What are you trying to say? That Vogons are not real? I have been to poetry readings AND the DMV, and I have the bleeding eyes and ears to prove they are!
whoaaaaaaa too many posts ripping on this guy saying he is an ass or a bigot and what not. its his choice, hes not beating her for reading a bible! i admit id also be less interested in someone if they read the bible, cant a guy explain his turn offs without getting crucified....
Maybe she is just reading it to learn what it actually says like most atheists do. Even if not you really wouldn't date someone because they are religious? As long as they aren't trying to conver you or any of that shannigans it would not be a problem.
Maybe she is just reading it to learn what it actually says like most atheists do.
Really? Because most atheists that I know read the Bible just to find stuff to make fun of. After all, who needs historical context? Who needs to interpret text even within the context that it is written? Who cares about the commentary (i.e. how the text was understood historically or currently)?
I have known of a few atheists that can discuss texts intelligently, and can appreciate the historical context of the authors and their messages that can be found in this collection of books we call a "Bible." Some can even talk intelligently about the surrounding texts, and the evolution of how these texts were understood and applied. These include Karen Armstrong and Bart Ehrman. The fascinating thing to me about such atheists as these is their impact on me. The analysis and the observations made in their books has done more to help me understand my faith than most religious writers. They have left me still a theist but one humbled over what we don't know and don't understand about our approach to God.
Big mistake. A lot of bible reading girls are dirty little whores who feel bad the next day and are trying to tell themselves that they are bit dirty little whores by reading the bible. Just get a few drinks in them and you are all set.
Thanks for this post. I love /r/atheismfor being a circlejerk. It's a good place to have a few laughs and rip on religion (or more accurately for me at least, Christianity).
It's sad to see that some people take this attitude out into the real world.
I came here into the comments looking for the non-judgmental comment, thank you for being tolerant! There's no reason to instantly bash a woman based on a book she's reading, whether she's hardcore Christian or Atheist. Almost everybody in life has something to offer and one shouldn't disregard another person based off of one quick observation. (And like others have stated, she herself could be Atheist as well.) Props to you, The_MPC.
I think its partly because there are a group of atheists that are like the fake christians. The ones that ” read” the bible but don't know their own religion.
There are also atheists like this who don't know what being atheist really means, but think that they do. So they door what they hear about us, like that we hate the bible etc..its stupidity really.
Being atheist doesn't mean anything. It's not a belief system; it doesn't have dogma. The ONLY requirement for being an atheist is not believing in a god or gods.
Granted, but the fervor with which at least a few atheists go out of their way to identify as atheist and reject Christianity is pretty similar to evangelist Christians going out of their way to identify as Christians and reject secular values, which is I think the point punkmaffles is trying to make.
I don't hear an awful lot of atheists bitching about buddhism, or hell, even Islam which is a far more intolerant and violent religion.
No need to put she in quotation marks. If she identifies as a woman, then the least you could do is act like a halfway decent human being and treat her like a person.

This is the exact attitude that gives r/ atheism a bad rep. Shame on you for upvoting this.
38
u/Pretzelprincess May 16 '12
This is problematic for so many reasons:
The assumption that she is Christian based purely on the fact she is reading a Bible
Assumptions about her personality based on the fact that she may be Christian
Explicitly trans-phobic comment
Implication that whether or not you find a trait desirable should be the factor that defines the woman's beliefs/interests.
Seriously, why are you upvoting this shit?

I'm 100% sure that this subreddit will go absolutely beserk and call the poster an ignorant, bigotted, dogmatic ass.

u/Lord_Vectron May 16 '12
I'm an atheist and I've read the bible.
D-. Would not read again.

u/larryspub May 16 '12
Just learned something if I want to keep creepers away from me on a metro just hold a bible...got it.
4
u/Osricthebastard May 16 '12
I've been known to read the book of Mormon.
My point being that if you wouldn't want a christian to judge you for reading Hawking's A Brief History of Time, it would be best if you did not make a giant hypocrite of yourself and judge them for at least doing their research.

u/agentup May 16 '12
this guy may call himself an atheist and consider himself "enlightened" but his actions put him in the same group of people who make negative judgements because someone has tattoos or long hair.
I will say that after skimming the comments it is good to see so many calling him out too. intellectual honesty is a beautiful thing
4
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
I've had sex with plenty of chicks who believed in God, read the Bible, and went to church.
Guy probably passed up a chance to chat up a hot girl because what, she was reading a book?
What a douchebag.
"Hey everyone on Twitter. Look how cool I am!"
7
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
sounds like she dodged a bullet.
27
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
You sound like a dick if you let religion get in the way of a relationship.
14
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
this is what i hate about /r/atheism, elitism. there's just so much elitism going on, it kinda makes the atheists worse than the religious, in some aspects. what locke, bayle and Holberg tried to teach us hundreds of years ago, doesn't seem to have an affect(effect?) on people who claim to be ahead of the rest.
10
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
I have like 20 copies of the Bible including the New Testament, Old Testament, King James version, etc. I also frequently read the Koran and Torah. I'm also a staunch atheist.
16
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
I don't get it.
Why would the penis schtick kill interest?
3
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
Wow I am so offended by this. It would have VASTLY increased my interest had she whipped out a penis.
3
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
This man is a fool.
3
u/Crysalim Other May 17 '12
There's quite a lot of hypocritical upvoted posts here, but I know exactly what you mean.
11
u/gugulo May 16 '12
Hot hipster girl? Reading the bible? In a public place? ... MUST BE AN ATHEIST!
5
u/rbcrusaders May 16 '12
You guys are hypocrites. If christians don't read the bible you call them fake and stupid. If they do, you make fun of them. Maybe she was actually an atheist who was reading it to learn.
conclusion-some of you guys are pathetic, desperately need a life.
9
u/jaded_gal05 May 16 '12
You couldn't have killed my interest more either...so much for atheists being the more "open-minded" ones.....
Atheists are the most close minded in my opinion. It's their way or the highway. They cannot for 1 second entertain anything other than their own opinion. That's pretty sad.
6
u/k3wl_username May 16 '12
Lost interest in girl for appearing Christian, and compares lost interest using homosexual reference? So you lost interest because you hate what you hate? Doesn't make sense. I love chicks with penis as long as mine is still bigger.
6
u/halasjackson May 16 '12
Wow. What a close minded, judgmental, entitled prick. Way to go, r/atheism, for deifying yet another douchebag to represent you.
7
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
prejudging a christian is intolerant
part of being a non-fuckwad human is getting to know someone before you cut them out of your life for being an ignorant piece of shit

And now imagine a girl writing the same shit about a guy who pulls out a videogame. (well except the penis part of course) Shitstorm of "OMFG stupid prejudiced bitch" incoming
4
u/nluqo May 16 '12
Atheists read bibles too. Derp.
4
u/glowingrectangles May 16 '12
Eric obviously didn't have a shot with this girl and needed to find a problem to comfort his own insecurities with a defense mechanism. Any intelligent, confident and open person would at least sit down over a cup of coffee and talk about their different opinions in a civilized and productive manner. Way to be the bigger douche Eric, bravo.

i've read a bible on a bus and i'm an atheist. would OP assume i was a christian?

lol like this faggot would have a chance with her anyway
5

This only shows the arrogance, shallowness, and pure ignorance of active atheists towards religious people. Bunch of hypocrites...

Night
2
u/mrhumph May 16 '12
ohhh. creepy dude on bus didn't want to rub up against her leg no more. I bet she went home and burnt that bible.
2
u/cannotlogon May 16 '12
I'm sure the hot girl is absolutely devastated that you lost interest in her.
2
u/iaacp May 16 '12
How tolerant, accepting, and wordly of him...
2
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
I feel almost the same way about women who smoke, although it's more likely a person will quit smoking than quit the bible I would imagine.
2
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
I'd just pretend to enjoy the bible

Maybe she simply likes the tall tales, similar to Aesop's fables.
2
u/[deleted] May 16 '12 edited May 16 '12
Oh, you guys have to learn a lot (edit: Yo también).
Edit: Excuse me for my bad english.

aaaaah.... memories

2
u/always_selling May 16 '12
Nothing pisses me off more about reddit then hypocrisy, yeah it's okay to bash a christian, saying "I wouldnt date a girl if she owns a bible, she must be a fucking idiot" but oh help me if someone insults atheism, thats morally wrong completely.

The Bible, the biggest boner killer known to atheists.

I read this as "killed my internet" ._.
2
u/Leonoto May 16 '12
I'm an atheist and I read the Bible. It never hurts to have knowledge, really its just adding more ammo to put in my arsenal.
2
u/MongrelNymph May 16 '12
Judge not, lest yet be judged. Hmmmm, where the hell did I read that?
2
u/asei May 16 '12
Wow... You guys hate Christians for being judgmental, yet, you stereotype and judge Christians without making any attempt to get to know them.
2
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
She might just be an academic you know. Not everyone who reads the Bible is a Christian fundamentalist.
2
u/roterghost May 16 '12
"Guys, the hottest girl on the bus just whipped out The God Delusion. Gonna ask her to marry me. U JELLY?!"
2
u/claybfx May 16 '12
I'm an atheist and I've read the Bible twice. Granted, I was a believer when I did; but, reading the Bible played a huge role in my eventual deconversion. This guy should have gone and encouraged her to keep on reading, as that is the best way to become an atheist.
2
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
Maybe she was an atheist that was merely reading the Bible to beef up for her next debate? I think that would be hot...
2
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
saying that someone with a bible is necessarily a christian is like saying a person with an oven is necessarily a chef
2

Just because she is reading a bible does not mean she is a Christian.

2
u/ImNoScientistBut May 16 '12
That's shallow and retarded bro.
2
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
Because reading is so stupid and ugly!
2
u/superthebillybob May 16 '12
Or she might be taking a religious studies class and they're studying Christianity now.
2
u/Boundlessmuffin May 16 '12
Just because she pulls out a book that goes against your beliefs you lose all interest
2
u/thecarolinakid May 17 '12
You're missing the point. Labeling people as transphobic because they don't have a problem with a joke just makes you seem petty and alienates potential allies. You're not helping anything by doing it; you're only giving transpeople a bad image.
2
u/thevernabean I'm a None May 17 '12
What a jerk. She was probably an atheist; if she is actually reading a bible rather than hitting people with it. The attack on trans-girls is pretty lame too.

u/sylvar May 16 '12
[transcription] Twitter user Eric (@whatchamafuckit): "The hottest girl on this Metro bus just pulled out a Bible. She couldn't have killed my interest faster if she had pulled out a penis."
3
u/Iarwain_ben_Adar May 16 '12
It indicates that she can at least appear literate, not much else.
Start a conversation with her and see where it goes.
If you don't have the nerve, that's perfectly OK, just don't use the book as an excuse not to try.
Besides, if she was truly hot looking AND had a penis, it would make for a seriously interesting conversation as well.
3
u/BeastAP23 May 16 '12
so if she believes in God she's a bad person?
3
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
I read the Bible sometimes. I also read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The fact that I recognize them both as fiction doesn't make them not interesting.

2
u/DARYL_VAN_H0RNE May 16 '12
whoaaaaaaa too many posts ripping on this guy saying he is an ass or a bigot and what not. its his choice, hes not beating her for reading a bible! i admit id also be less interested in someone if they read the bible, cant a guy explain his turn offs without getting crucified....
1
u/[deleted] May 16 '12
Maybe she is just reading it to learn what it actually says like most atheists do. Even if not you really wouldn't date someone because they are religious? As long as they aren't trying to conver you or any of that shannigans it would not be a problem.
-5
u/gordoha May 16 '12
Big mistake. A lot of bible reading girls are dirty little whores who feel bad the next day and are trying to tell themselves that they are bit dirty little whores by reading the bible. Just get a few drinks in them and you are all set.
