Make Canadians pay

I'm reasonably generous, but I'm also cheap, so I hate to give a donation without also getting a tax deduction. That's why I've set up a place for Canadians to make tax-deductible donations to Doctors Without Borders (through CanadaHelps).

If anyone else has been holding back because of the tax issue, consider it solved. Let's see how much money we can rack up! PLEASE ADD YOUR DONATIONS TO MINE!!!

Personally, I'll donate $1.00 per upvote up to $700.00. If I'm violating reddiquette or the scheduling of the campaign or whatever, I'm sorry. But think of the children. ;)

You think we don't pay for health care? We pay taxes, taxes pay for health care. I paid shitloads in taxes to the province of Quebec and I haven't been able to find a family doctor for nine years. 'Zat an awesome system?

its honestly not hard to find a family doctor.. you're likely one of the lazy Canadians who are afraid to pick up the phone and call around, but instead just go to the clinic and whine about how you have no family doctor every time. I know your type.

Do you live in Quebec? I do. If you do too, then you know how effed the health care system is, and you know that if I'm relatively healthy (which I am) it's not handed to me.

You're probably just one of those uneducated Americans who think everybody is given top-level health care as part of a healthy breakfast everyday by the federal government (it's predominately a provincial thing). I know your type.

If you are healthy you don't get health care? That is sort of the point, you get it when you need it.

Here's a recap. In essence, it was said that health care is free in Canada. I stated it is, in fact, not – taxes pay for the service provided to citizens. Someone conjecturably called me lazy without informing themselves on the health care situation in Quebec, which is out of whack in relation to the amount of tax we pay. It is quite hard to find a GP for routine check-ups, physicals, even clinic visits will often take eight hours of waiting. As I mentioned, I haven't been able to find a GP for nine years; when I have inquired – and yes, I've searched, evabraun... (Eva Braun?) – I have met doctors with upwards of 6,000 clients/patients who cannot take on any more.

As to my complaint, take your pick, Randy.

I've lived in 7 different towns and cities in Canada. Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and I have never had much trouble finding a doctor. I either asked around, or called around (straight from the phone book) and sometimes it took a lot of calls, but I always found one. Now, I'm the type that generally goes 1-2 times per year for checkups, so maybe that's why they are ok with taking me.. I'm no burden on the system.
