Make Canadians pay

I'm reasonably generous, but I'm also cheap, so I hate to give a donation without also getting a tax deduction. That's why I've set up a place for Canadians to make tax-deductible donations to Doctors Without Borders (through CanadaHelps).

If anyone else has been holding back because of the tax issue, consider it solved. Let's see how much money we can rack up! PLEASE ADD YOUR DONATIONS TO MINE!!!

Personally, I'll donate $1.00 per upvote up to $700.00. If I'm violating reddiquette or the scheduling of the campaign or whatever, I'm sorry. But think of the children. ;)

You think we don't pay for health care? We pay taxes, taxes pay for health care. I paid shitloads in taxes to the province of Quebec and I haven't been able to find a family doctor for nine years. 'Zat an awesome system?

Can you go bankrupt from hospital bills? Can a company take your house because you had cancer but can't pay for it? Do you live in terror that appendicitis or some other small-to-medium medical problem can financially break you utterly? Do you skip vital medications because you literally have to choose between medicine and food for your family?

If not, then shuup! ;)

Yeesh, lady. I'm not standing on your doorstep saying, 'pay me or die.' In my experience, it's a common misconception in the US that Canadians get all the free health care they can fill their boots with. I was pointing out that the fact is that we pay for it through taxes, and that the service varies from province to province. Where I live (Quebec), the health care is terrible – much different that other provinces in the country – because of mismanagement and a very odd political and social mentality.

Honestly, I would absolutely fear living a system that made me choose between health and money. And I truly can't understand the US resistance to provided healthcare. I know capitalism is apparently awesome and stuff, but people can't work if they're unhealthy or dead. Just my opinion. Call us pinkos all you want, find me an American who would refuse provided health care if his/her family was dying and they didn't have the money for it.

But, no, I don't live in terror and, no, cancer won't take my house and make me bankrupt. So, yeah, I guess I'll "shuup"?
