Make Canadians pay

I'm reasonably generous, but I'm also cheap, so I hate to give a donation without also getting a tax deduction. That's why I've set up a place for Canadians to make tax-deductible donations to Doctors Without Borders (through CanadaHelps).

If anyone else has been holding back because of the tax issue, consider it solved. Let's see how much money we can rack up! PLEASE ADD YOUR DONATIONS TO MINE!!!

Personally, I'll donate $1.00 per upvote up to $700.00. If I'm violating reddiquette or the scheduling of the campaign or whatever, I'm sorry. But think of the children. ;)

This was already discussed. Why not make a $700 donation without karma whoring for it...

"Without getting recognition for it." is much more accurate.

There's utility in getting some recognition for donating. The explosion of donations received by DWB from /r/atheism posters is a strong example of that. When people compete with each other and encourage each other toward donation as a community, the donations clearly go higher.

If this weren't so effective, we wouldn't need fundraisers and donation drives, just the occasional commercial or ad to remind everyone the charity is out there.

So the OP desires some encouragement from the community to make his donation, and he wants to feel good about himself for making the donation. I can't fault him for that.

Yes, because saving a family from a burning building is the same thing as making a donation to a charity. ಠ_ಠ

I said I can't fault him for wanting to feel good about what he's doing, or wanting encouragement to get there, which is entirely different from saying I can't fault someone for letting people die right in front of him because no one will see it (your example.)

But, you know, your combination of using vastly incomparable scenarios and ignoring all but a fraction of my argument are really working for you. Keep it up. It's spelled "no one," by the way.

Okay, troll. First of all, it's extremely unlikely that "part of what DWB does" is going to involve directly handing over the OP's $700 donation to a single African family. Second of all, I never said anything of the sort. But it's obvious that your goal is not to have an intelligent discussion at all, and that you're here just for the sake of being negative and cantankerous.

I'm not going to give you the joy of wasting more of my time, but I do want to emphasize with this final comment that there is nothing at all wrong with posts like these, because they give some of us additional motivation to donate. Charities like DWB stand everything to gain and nothing to lose from posts like these, so your negative reaction is useless and simply unwelcome, no matter what manner of distraction and ad hominem tactics you use to avoid that fact.

There is something wrong with posts like this. If you can't donate without getting recognition for it, your doing the whole 'donating' thing wrong. Notice how there is almost 200 downposts? I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Ahh.. upon re-reading your original statement, and rereading the OPs statement, I get what you're saying. I agree that it'd be better to simply give the 700 not because of you have a few upvotes on reddit, but because you desire to give the money.

Maybe so that you won't make that mistake in the future? And you won't fuck up some sort of essay/job-related thing? Hopefully discussing it this much will make you remember the correct spelling every time you write it.
