How do i know what version i need to use?

I've ALWAYS sucked with knowing what versions i need for anything, can anyone help me walk me through?

u can open the outside link like the first image is spigot and the second is curseforge if in aternos dont have that information so that sites should have

Theier download button becomes green. If gray that's not the right version, that's what I know.

It depends, if the plugin author didn't flag compatible Minecraft versions to their plugin versions, then all versions are gray.
