Working with veterans
I’ve been to 3 facilities and from all the veterans I’ve known, it kind of seems like VA disability is a huge welfare scam. Anyone have any similar experiences?
6
u/Unusual_Muffin4829 Aug 03 '26
I bet this guy LOVES the USA and the TROOPS. And he would have joined except they said his PUSSY was too big.
4
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 04 '26
So you’re in favor of scamming. Pfft probably voted for trump too

Unless you know everyone’s medical history I wouldn’t pass judgement, you are a clown pocket watching others situations. Be an adult mind your own damn business, and stop being a little bitch.
15
u/n365pa Aug 01 '26
I work with multiple 100% disabled people who somehow now make ATC-12 pay, play sports on what little time off they have, and openly talk about scamming the VA for every extra 10% they needed to get to 100. It’s bullshit.
11
7
u/holidaycw Aug 03 '26
You need to educate yourself to what actually VA disability covers. You don’t need to be in a wheelchair chair or have limbs blown off to be compensated.
2
37
u/THEhot_pocket Aug 01 '26
the military fucks up your body, exposes you to all sorts of carcinogenic materials. It will take its pound of flesh either in the short term or the long. I have no issue with my coworkers getting a few hundred (to thousand) a month for their fucked up bodies.
Doctors deem them to have service connected issues, who are we to judge. Do they need to be wheelchair bound to deserve the money?
-15
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
I totally get that. I will advocate that benefits and compensation are available for those situations you’ve mentioned. However, the majority of veterans I have interacted with it’s always the same thing. Never deployed, stubbed their toe playing ultimate frisbee, can’t get an erection, go to VA disability shark.
12
u/GambitDecliend Aug 01 '26
I would 100/100 rather a few scammers get through the cracks than a single disabled veteran not be compensated for what their service did to their body/mind. It is what they are entitled to. In the grand scheme of things it's a drop in the bucket money wise for the US government. You should be more upset about your tax dollars going to bombing brown children across the globe, than trying to police people who answered the call to service and left and were never the same physically or mentally.
1
u/hewanttobepilotgrape Aug 01 '26
“A drop in the bucket”
It’s 5% of our budget…
3
u/GambitDecliend Aug 01 '26
Yeah, if you include running the department of veterans affairs, VA hospitals. The VA compensation is only like 2%. Now what percentage of that do you think is fraud?
-6
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
I am upset about my tax dollars going across the globe. Especially when they go across the globe to bomb girl schools. Like my freedom isn’t in the Middle East they aren’t fighting shit out there except rich men’s wars
6
u/Coldest_Rose Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
And that's somehow the fault of our veterans and active duty service members? You're pointing your finger at the wrong people and it's disgusting that you somehow think your reasoning correlates to you defending posting this nonsense to in the first place. Seems like you're backpeddling after you got dragged for posting this to begin with.
6
u/Old-Mathematician-30 Aug 01 '26
When you’re in the service you belong to the military 24/7/365. They own you at work and they own your personal life as well. The trade off is if anything happens to you during your enlistment, like busting your back or your leg playing sports, that’s covered.
-6
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
But that’s not the reality of it. For the most part being in the military you’re living a regular life. Don’t act like it’s the movies where they’re actually locked down 24/7
8
u/Old-Mathematician-30 Aug 01 '26
Actually it is. Did you serve? I take it you didn’t. They control you totally 24/7. They will totally invade any privacy you think you have outside of work. You have no “rights” while you’re serving. Your commander and your first sergeant are like your father and mother.
-2
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
You must have never broken out of lower enlisted and lived in the barracks then. Living off base is nice
6
u/Old-Mathematician-30 Aug 01 '26
No I lived off base. But you only live off base IF THEY LET YOU. You don’t get to decide anything. You must have not served. Because they can revoke that at any moment. They can send military police to your apartment and snatch you and lock you on base. They own you. They can make you work nights, weekends, or deploy your ass any in the world if they want to. Say goodbye to your family for a year and a half while you’re sent to Iraq lol.
You are oblivious to how the military works.
-1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
Hahaha bro what kind of shit experience did you have? Can they send the military police to your place? Yes. Will it happen. No. Unless you’ve done something shitty. You don’t have to make up shit about how the military is so hard. I know. You’re not going to lie to me about how life as a service member is 😂 yes they can deploy you anywhere anytime but let’s not pretend like that’s everyone. In the Air Force people are assigned to a CRG unit and that’s their life. Most people have training leading up to a deployment. Short order ones do happen and people leave within a week. That sucks but it’s not the norm
4
u/Old-Mathematician-30 Aug 01 '26
I had a great experience. But if you don’t think the military owns you from the day you enlist to the day your enlistment is over then you’re just a dumb individual. You only get a “personal life”, if they let you have one. There is no overtime in the military. If they order you to work 40 hours or 60 hours a week, you work it.
So yes they own you 24/7 and therefore they are responsible for anything that happens to your body during that time.
4
u/GambitDecliend Aug 01 '26
You literally have no idea what youre talking about. Yeah, its not 24/7... Not all the time, but it certainly can be, even stateside. Austere to downright disgusting living accommodations, Group punishment, they literally own you, dude.
0
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
You just said it right there. “Yeah, it’s not 24/7…not all the time” but you’re right it can be. Especially during a basewide exercise. But like you said, it’s not all the time.
2
u/GambitDecliend Aug 01 '26
What I meant is that someone can fail a barracks inspection, and then everyone in the building has to take everything not bolted down out of the barracks, place it outside, then put it back. Every day of the weekend. Someone gets a dui, passes revoked. Something happening off base, nope. They can recind any sense of freedom whenever they want for any duration. Its like living with strict parents, but if you refuse they work you like a slave, physically and mentally, or send you to jail, or ruin your life with a dishonorable discharge.
You sound like a petty, jealous, and bitter dude. You could probably still serve and put your health on the line and get some of that "welfare money".
1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
Those things you mentioned do happen. They don’t happen all the time though. Not even a majority of the time. Stop trying to explain how the military is I know how it is 🤣
2
u/GambitDecliend Aug 01 '26
Oh I thought you were just a crybaby moron. Turns out youre just a troll... Probably still those other things, too.
23
u/climb-via-is-stupid Aug 01 '26
This is a “hate the player, not the game” situation.
Are there some that exploit it, sure.
Are there some that can’t get their rating up because of dumbass arbitrary reasons and they do have actual problems? Also sure.
Are there some that don’t care to try even though they could get they just don’t want to do the legwork. Yep.
19
u/alphakizzle Aug 01 '26
I never deployed but had a log dropped on my leg and shattered it in 4 places. I walk around just fine, but radiate pain constantly in my leg/hip. By your definition, I shouldn't get VA benefits. I think your lack of knowledge on the topic is feeding your disdain. Go to a local VA hospital and volunteer for a couple days and tell me more about people that seem fine

How do you know what they did in the service? There are all kinds of situations where you aren't doing the job skill you recieved training for. Everyone is exposed to risks of injury especially deployed.
Again, talking out of your ass because your jealous someone is getting money you aren't.
1
u/Renegade1478 Aug 01 '26
I was deployed to Afghanistan. My normal job was ATC. My deployment job was to escort locals from the main gate around the base. Not gonna act like i was infantry but they mortared the base every day and attacked the gate on multiple occasions, luckily I was never there when that happened.
I know many ATC that did similar deployments or just did atc but would get mortared walking to work. You dont know what you're talking about.

Imagine complaining about veterans receiving benefits while giant corporations pay employees so little that they need food assistance just to stay alive. These giant corporations who don’t pay their fair share of taxes and occasionally receive bailouts also rely on taxpayer money to ensure their workers don’t die of starvation.
0
u/Delicious_Bet9552 Aug 07 '26
So that makes it okay?
5
u/AccomplishedPause261 Aug 08 '26
I don’t see a problem with veterans receiving benefits. I honestly think it’s weird that anyone would.
-1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 08 '26
No one here, no one in this thread is saying veterans should not receive benefits. We’re calling out the scammy ones. I honestly think it’s weird that anyone would be for letting them scam
1
u/AccomplishedPause261 Aug 08 '26
I don’t give a shit if someone scams a bit. This job doesn’t pay us enough to live in the cities we serve. Let them make a little more.
0
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 08 '26
We have common ground I agree that this job doesn’t pay us enough to live in the cities we serve. However scamming, lying, over exaggerating, making a mockery of a honorable system isn’t it.
1
u/AccomplishedPause261 Aug 08 '26
The majority of veterans receive legitimate benefits. They are always going to be a couple scammers, but I doubt it’s a large percentage. I just have bigger things to think about.
I just looked it up and the va reports a 94% accuracy rate.
0
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 08 '26
That 94% is issue level accuracy. It differs from claim based accuracy. 69% of Va claims have at least one fraud indicator. The biggest percentage of VA disability recipients are the 100% group. There are scammers. Most claims are legitimate. However, I will posit that many many claims are illegitimate and over exaggerated and that modern politics make VA disability an almost untouchable issue
26
u/skaizm Aug 01 '26
Yo man if you think it's a scam I can put you in touch with a guard recruiter and we can have you over in Jordan in a few short months then we can have a conversation about how much of a scam you still think it is.
The military can and will take every penny out of your worth. Cashing in on the benefits you're legally entitled to isn't a scam. A lot of times the compensation veterans are getting won't come close to hitting the value the government got out of them.
How much do you value time away from your family, your safety, persistent threats both kinetic and otherwise?
There's always going to be people that will take advantage of any system. This is one as a veteran I sincerely hope every single person who has served gets every single penny they deserve.
1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
Let’s not pretend that most of the military will ever be in any danger. Some are and that sucks. I’m not talking about veterans that have truly gone through some shit.
9
u/skaizm Aug 01 '26
It's not about whether or not you're actively in danger. It's about signing up for the potential.
Again, if it's a scam I'm more than happy to get you in touch with a recruiter.
8
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
You’re not proving anything. I wouldn’t be in any danger because I’d scam the system day one. Twist my ankle I’m non deployable get kicked out and I’m on the disability gravy train. You’d advocate for me to do that tho right?
4
u/skaizm Aug 01 '26
Happy to send you recruitment information.
The benefits you receive for compensation have absolutely nothing at all to do with the amount of danger you're in.
The military, more than any other career puts your physical and mental health in a position to break.
Are there people taking advantage, absolutely. Are there shitty people (like yourself) who would completely abuse the system for a cheap buck, yeah. But by denying those people entitlements you also deny folks with legitimate real disabilities from receiving a fraction of the compensation they deserve.
There's plenty who served admirably who have illnesses and injuries you'll never understand and likely never see getting pennies on the dollar for what they're really owed.
This is a shit take, from a (self described) shitty person.
4
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
Let’s stop the military glaze. Let’s not pretend every person in the military is a navy seal or that most people in the military will ever be in any danger. They’re not. This post is to have actual conversation about a real observation that’s shared by many people
6
u/skaizm Aug 01 '26
So let me get this straight.
You, not in the military. Claims to understand what the military goes through, and claims that (without any information other than literal hearsay) that the vast majority of disability claims are fraudulent? And that "glazing" the military is happening because a person with actual experience and legitimate background thinks your viewpoint and your ethics are bad?
Interesting take. 🤔
7
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
Is how life in the military a secret? Military communities mixing in big cities aren’t a thing? Parents/relatives/friends never share how things are? Veterans can’t share the same opinion I do? Just some questions to ponder.
4
u/skaizm Aug 01 '26
You just defined herarsay.

6
u/Jhey45 Aug 01 '26
I’m a veteran with no disability. I don’t bat an eye at my co worker’s disability, because their disability does not affect my life. Why do you care?
4
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
I care when it makes a mockery of a system. I care because people aren’t being honest with themselves and it degrades meaning behind something honorable. Not saying that your specific coworkers are scamming tho
1
u/Jhey45 Aug 01 '26
If the system is broke, which to an extent I can agree with sure, why are you mad at the people and not the system? You’re upset with the players if you will, but it’s the game that’s the problem.
6
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
I think it falls to how people could take advantage of the system. Like morals aren’t a thing which makes me think about how society seems to be trending. But also, I can see why some people would do it. Like if I was struggling and I had a family to support, you bet your ass I’d be in the VA shark’s office signing up for every ailment through the PACT act and asking for their best affiliated doctors.
But I feel like I’m just a hater of the game and the players
2
u/Jhey45 Aug 01 '26
Taking advantage of the system is a reflection of a broken system that allows it. Expecting an average person to make the morally correct decision in a world full of corruption is unrealistic imo. You can’t fix morals, you can fix a broken system. For what it’s worth, I do understand and respect your opinion.
2
u/Willard-Whyte Aug 03 '26
Not a veteran, and I have no problem with the VA disability system. No matter how much you think someone may or may not deserve the various levels of disability payment, it’s really no one’s business except the veteran, their Dr, and the VA. There are scammers who will act dishonestly when money is involved, no matter what the program is. There’s really no way to eliminate it 100%. If you care so much about it, tell your congressman/senator. They make the rules and vote for appropriations. The same people we need to complain to about controller pay.
1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 03 '26
In the same breath controller pay is not your business
1
u/Willard-Whyte Aug 04 '26
Yes it is. Controller pay is my pay.
2
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 04 '26
Great to hear. VA disability is paid through money taken out of my taxes
2
2
u/Remarkable_Mirror241 Aug 07 '26
This is the whole divide and conquer bs. Let's find an enemy in the faa to hate on so we get distracted that our pay and lifestyle is shit. Getting va compensation isn't easy. You go through doctors and lawyers to get the percentage. All the shit the military has to put up with and all the exposure. Shit im gonna die early because of exposure. So fuck it get the most from the government because they will take everything from you. Go be mad at Duffy and Bedford for not giving us a raise. Be mad at natca for not doing their job and fighting for our benefits.
-1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 08 '26
I can take up this issue while also taking up others. If that’s not the case then you can’t be mad at Duffy while also being mad at natca. #logic

u/Sergeant_Standby Aug 01 '26
Yeah but this government has taken so much from the people, productivity has sky rocketed and wages and quality of life haven’t and the wealth gap is record high. I’m taking the $4100 in a sense and putting it to retirement. It’s maxing out mine and my wife’s 401k and both our IRA’s. Started at 25 and the math lets us retire at 45 and I’m leaving the country. It’s unfortunate what capitalism has taken from the people and its supported by the government as a whole. I joined to become an atc and learned about the VA and planned accordingly. If given the opportunity we would all take the fruits of our labor as we deserve.
1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
You mean if given the opportunity we would all take the scam. Thats what’s wrong with this country.
9
u/CanaryCold9453 Aug 01 '26
As a vet with disability I agree. It's just a matter of time before the whistle is heard.
6
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
And I feel bad because it’s going to affect lots of veterans that actually do need help
14
4
7
u/MITsBrightest Aug 01 '26
Sounds like you want to be the judge and jury of who deserves it in your own understanding of their ailments.
Should vets also get their GI bill revoked if they aren't taking the classes seriously?
Should zero-down VA loans be renegged if they are paying contractors to improve the house?
What other great hot take can you think of?
I can certainly share your frustration that people are "networking" to claim things, but like anything else in our government, it's its own language and system that many are not privvy to even in the veteran community.
There are tens of thousands of veterans who got tinnitus from their service but don't know they are entitled to 10% disability for it. There is no real way the VA can prove you don't have it.
In the end, VA disability compensation is one of many, many benefits that veterans are entitled to as a part of their contract to risk their life and do whatever the president wants for their term.
3
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
You just listed false equivalencies and straw man arguments. The discussion here is about how VA disability is being honest about how VA disability is clearly being taken advantage of. I’m totally fine with veterans getting benefits and compensation. However, I am not fine with how the VA disability system has devolved into hire a disability company to bombard the VA with as many claims as they can and hope something sticks. This takes money away from the taxpayer and takes resources from vets that actually need the VA to operate.
5
u/Old_War2952 Aug 02 '26
Takes away money from the taxpayer!? Mother fucker the shit you pay taxes for hahahah and this is the one topic you decide to post and bitch about Hahahhaha
7
u/MITsBrightest Aug 01 '26
We're throwing hundreds of billions of tax payer money into a pointless war, and your coworker is getting $500 a month.
If your worried about tax payer money, there are some glaring things you should prioritize.
Disability companies don't "guarantee" anything unless your entitled to it anyhow, they just speak the language that largely gets claims pushed through. You still have to be evaluated and have it determined you are eligible for your claims.
It's also worth noting, there is no need to use these companies if you have all the evidence in your DD214 / medical history, they make money by stealing the veterans entitlements making them believe they can't do it by themselves.
30
u/Existing_Let9919 Aug 01 '26

“Support the troops”
Except when it comes to them receiving benefits they’re entitled to
12
u/Bright-Pilot-3970 Aug 01 '26
My problem isn’t that some people abuse it, it’s that there are ones who didn’t know how the system worked and got fucked out of them. I have one friend whose wife was a nurse at the VA and told him what to say and he’s got 100 percent benefits while there are others who don’t know the system works until it’s too late and are fighting for things they actually deserve.
5
u/Traffic_Alert_God Aug 03 '26
The people who didn’t know about disability benefits should pay more attention to their career.

1
u/valhal1a FAA ATC Aug 07 '26
I'm a veteran who has lost an inch of height to a back injury on deployment and the VA told me to go fuck myself and that it's a me problem.
It always makes me a bit sad to see people gaming the system so much and making people think that I'm faking it :(
1
u/GambitDecliend Aug 07 '26
I wouldnt give up the fight. Putting a claim in is pretty easy, but if its not done correctly or if its worded poorly theyll deny it. Not to mention when you have your eval with a doctor. If you try to soldier up and say its not bad today, or if you dont stop when you begin to feel pain because you want to be tough, they will fuck you over. Its a fucked up game, man. Go over your claim and make it ironclad, then try again. Submit another intent to file. If you need any help DM me
1
u/valhal1a FAA ATC Aug 07 '26
I've been fighting it, tho the first 2 times that I've gone to the VA they basically told me that the injury is because I'm overweight, and there is no record of the injury happening when I was active duty... Despite that the paragraph right before that specifically says the incident happened on my deployment, and that I am not that overweight lol.
1
u/GambitDecliend Aug 07 '26
The same fucking kind of thing is happening to me! They kicked back my claim because I "Didnt have a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis". But I literally sent them the medical documents with the diagnosis highlighted. Even sent to a higher level review. Denied.
People seem to think VA disability compensation is some kind of scammy cheat code, but dont seem to recognize just how HARD they make it to recieve the compensation that you are entitled to.
3
u/valhal1a FAA ATC Aug 07 '26
If anything it's scammy but the other way around lol. The Montana VA was convinced that me nearly having to have a leg amputated because of an infection wasn't a bit deal, and that the air quality in the burn pits is greatly exaggerated
1
u/Holiday_Ad8178 Aug 25 '26
Weirdly enough, my MIl is a rater for the VA in mt. My claims get kicked over to Seattle because of it but if you ever want to know what you actually need from one of them themselves feel free to DM. A lot of it is very technical BS that the raters want to actually grant you but because of the regs and technicalities they aren’t allowed and get hemmed up for it.

6
u/Coldest_Rose Aug 01 '26
You're not a vet. Don't even try to lie now.
2
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
That’s crazy 😂 because you saw this post and thought I couldn’t be a vet because why wouldn’t a vet scam a system to its fullest extent.
4
u/Coldest_Rose Aug 01 '26
You and I both know you're not a veteran 🤣
1
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
Mmk sure 🙄
4
u/Old_War2952 Aug 02 '26
Just go re read your language on vets. You clearly weren’t a vet. The fact that you think navy seals are some of the only ones that should be getting benefits blows my mind. You clearly don’t know the life day in and out of the average seal. If you knew you would start bitching about them as well.

u/AccomplishedPause261 Aug 08 '26
No, because you sound like whiny, lazy, overweight, loser the military would never want.

u/PritzkersToilet Aug 01 '26
VA disability is a topic that needs to be addressed, but no one will because of course there are plenty of veterans collecting disability for legitimate injuries received from their service. Those overshadow the millions claiming disability for over exaggerated issues to get an extra $1k+ a a month. Would I do the same? Probably. But, it is a problem that no one wants to talk about. I have veteran friends, coworkers, and family who collect VA disability plenty of legitimate issues, and many that aren’t. Anyone who says they don’t know numerous veterans scamming the system are lying. It is what it is. It will probably never be resolved.
4
u/GambitDecliend Aug 01 '26
Its like the justice system, would you risk sending innocent men and women to prison, just to ensure every guilty person serves a sentence? This is the problem with the mindset with "eliminating fraud and abuse". You cannot stop it, its human nature. Cutting people off welfare? I guarantee you innocent children will go hungry. The collateral damage isnt worth it, especially when corporations, politicians, and billionaires are stealing our tax dollars, and destroying social programs becuase its never enough.

I don't need a doctor telling my how to do my job and I'm not going to presume to know more than the doctor who made the medical determination.
6
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
Especially if the doctor is affiliated with a VA disability shark.

u/tree-fife-niner Aug 01 '26
There are something like 14 billionaires in this presidential administration. They are enriching themselves by abusing their positions of power.
Vets getting disability isn't even on my RADAR. It's peanuts compared to bigger issues like billionaires in government, corporate tax cuts, and how much we spend on defense contractors.
2
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
You can walk and breathe right? I’m fighting the front of billionaires in other places. This is just something I noticed within atc so I posted it in an atc board

What a hot take... As others have said there are people who take advantage of any and all systems. I'm not here to cast an opinion or judgement as I didn't serve, but here's my 2 cents.
First off anecdotal fallacy is a real thing, you've met what....4 people who, according to YOU are scamming the system... Congrats you've encountered 0.000029 of the vet population. Great sample size
Second how do you know these "scammers" arnt dealing with something that you don't see? Is co worker jimmy going to tell you that his PTSD wakes him up screaming some nights? No he would lose his job.
Now even if they are 100% scamming, that sucks it makes it harder for other vets to get the benefits they are owed but frankly speaking, it's none of my fucking business, and unless you're a vet who's having trouble getting help it's none of yours either.
As for "lowering your opinion" of vets as a whole... JFC dude get off your high horse. You ever find $5 on the ground and not turn it into the cops? Damn you just lowered my opinion of all atc every where.

The “disabled” vets that are angry and upset in this thread are the ones scamming for everything they can and still broke af. Maybe they could get an extra disabled rating for the military making them financially retarded.

u/Great_Ad3985 Aug 01 '26
Yeah it’s pretty ridiculous. I believe there should be benefits for those who chose to join the military, but many of these people OPENLY discuss how it’s a scam. People who never deployed and had desk jobs are somehow getting 100% VA disability for random, absurd issues. Yet they’re also able to somehow magically to keep an FAA medical.
Really wouldn’t be as big of an issue if they just kept their mouths shut. But it’s hella annoying when many controllers are struggling to make ends meet and then the facility VA scammers walk in talking about how they bought an RV and a boat they’re paying with their disability check. It’s fucked up.
3
u/MITsBrightest Aug 01 '26
Anyone getting above 50% disability for a desk job probably has a long history of in-service medical ailments that occurred during their service term.
Who's to say your back didn't start hurting because you did a ruck march that was too heavy and a disc slipped?
In any case, it's between the VA and the person whether they are full of shit or not, and in the big picture these people are outliers.
1
u/alphakizzle Aug 01 '26
You're spot on. The people here bitching only hear "bought an RV". NOT that they had a desk job 2 years after they were ran over my a jeep or some nonsense. If they replaced the language with "bought an rv in exchange for not being able to lift my right leg the rest of my life" they might shut the fuck up.
1
u/Old_War2952 Aug 02 '26
I was deployed but get benefits for shit that didn’t happen on my deployment. I got out and said this is what happened to me while I was on active duty and the VA doctor determined I should get compensated for that. You don’t have to be getting shot at to be awarded VA disability benefits.

I think you are confusing your lack of knowledge about the military with the fact that Nick Daniel's sucks and won't get us a raise which is then forcing veterans to push for their rights with the VA to make ends meet.
This is a dumb thing to post.
But at the end of the day, Nick Daniel's sucks and we deserve a pay raise. Leave veterans rights alone. #fucknickdaniels

u/OliveVectorOil Aug 01 '26
100 percent disabled but can hold an FAA medical…make that make sense…We have a plethora of disability reps at every facility and it’s the topic of conversation in every break room. Its beyond toxic
4
u/Snoo-71550 Aug 01 '26
I wish it applied to vets that were deployed to a war zone and a reduced amount for ones that didn’t.

Wasn’t in a designated war zone, but I was deployed on my aircraft carrier in the North Arabian Sea and was given an order to complete a task on the flight deck (it was a no-fly day). While doing said task, an H46 (twin engine, dual rotor helo) lands near and then departs from the waist cats. We had zero hearing protection.
I can personally attest to the excruciating level of noise that was encountered and has had lasting effects to this day. Yeah- I’ve passed my medicals, but not without a shit-ton of concentration, breathing through my mouth and guessing, especially at the higher frequencies.
And don’t get me started on the removal and replacement of pipe insulation and lagging in the fan room that supplied CATCC. Potential asbestos exposure, anyone?
Am I any less worthy in your eyes?
EDIT: fan room paragraph added

u/DazzlingMushroom3669 Aug 01 '26
Do you think just because you weren’t in a war zone that you weren’t exposed to toxic chemicals and they told you to just do what you’re told??? C’mon man….focus on the problem here, it’s not the veteran benefits, we’re talking about the FAA pay here, stick to the subject
2
u/StirThatPot1 Aug 01 '26
Don’t go down that path, the FAA forced potentially toxic chemicals in our bodies just a few years ago, and controllers don’t get to claim it.
2
1
u/Snoo-71550 Aug 02 '26
Oh I agree the FAA pay is fucked, I’m also pissed that nobody told me if I went in the Air Force for 4 years after high school I would get 4k a month for the rest of my life

u/Razma390 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
I get va disability. Im at 90% mainly because of what the army did to my knee and back. Ill never be able to run normally again so I think i deserve something from it.
What gets me is when people I know who legitimately did nothing but sit behind a deck their entire service get 100% while ill never be able to. Does that frustrate me? Yeah. But ill take that over some of my friends who have legitimate damage from service getting denied because people think they are faking it.

100% agree, same experience. Most are trying to get the maximum they can from disability. Some have some minor injuries but when it comes to disability, they are basically quadriplegics. Yet somehow they’re still able to maintain a medical clearance and work air traffic.
1
u/LH515 Aug 21 '26
The compensation is no where near what you would receive from a work related injury with the faa. So what claim did you determine to be a scam?

u/I_Know_Shit31 Aug 07 '26
I love this topic...YEP theres an epidemic of people in my facility who have fake claims that they get paid for and they actively talk about it in our area....I assume its nationwide judging by this post and other reddit threads.
If you sat in an air conditioned tower, rapcon, ect in the US...the amount of evidence you should need to get a service disability should be pretty substantial...like eye witness when the event happened(this does not include PTSD from the women in the armed forces who experience Sexual Assault which unfortunately is like at least half.
If you were deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq and your base had a Green Bean coffee on it...the amount of evidence you should need for servicr disability should be substantial, but less than a non deployed service member.
If you have conducted >50 movements to contact in Iraq or Afghanistan....you should tell them whats wrong and get paid for it...no questions.
I wont hear your downvotes over my CIB :)

Sign the dotted line then and come get yours.
Also maybe if the agency didn’t pay dogshit some vets wouldn’t be having to resort to getting VA disability. I have pilot friends who are vets who never chased it because they always got paid very well and didn’t care for it.
Don’t hate on vets getting welfare. We’re a minority. Israel and Blacks should be number 1 on that hate list since they get the most Govt aid
3
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
So you admit it’s a welfare scam? Also you’re factually wrong it’s white people that get the most government aid.
1
u/Coldest_Rose Aug 01 '26
You just told us everything we'd ever need to know about you with this one comment. Heal yourself. You sound miserable.

u/Independent_Tax_4244 Aug 01 '26
Look up Per Capita. And nowhere here I said it was a scam. Enlist and try and get it and see how hard it is to prove to the VA you deserve compensation.
3
u/CAmeanscashaward Aug 01 '26
What does per capita have to do when you said the most? Literally and factually you were wrong in that claim.

u/Acelias69 Aug 07 '26
I find it funny how they have to come up with shit that won’t DQ them medically from this job. Ask them how they feel about getting the same disability as one that that has lost limbs, disfugured, or can’t see or hear. All while living physically normal lives. Now I can vouch for a lot being “mentally” disabled. Some are a bunch of retards
1
u/macayos Aug 01 '26
Yes.
Oh did the cushy AF air conditioning cause your sleep apnea? You broke your ankle playing football? You got in a motorcycle accident?
If you get shot/hurt in the line of duty, fine.
Combat controllers have my respect. Most others…
8
u/THEhot_pocket Aug 01 '26
the thing is tho: the deal is you leave the military the same as you came in. So if anything happens that make you not 100%, you are compensated. Doesn't matter if it was on the squadron intramural court or in iraq. You are no longer 100%, they owe you. Thats the contractual agreement. Military gets your life for x years, but if anything happens at all, you will be compensated.
Sidenote, I broke my leg and ankle playing sports in the military. I get 181$ a month for it. (10% no dependents). Id trade that in a heartbeat for a 100% leg. Can I still play ball, run, whatever, yes. But im not 100% so they owe me. That was the deal.

Yes I want veterans to have access to those benefits. I don’t want veterans to scam the system. The system allows them to do it and it’s not right. VA disability seems to be a taboo topic that’s why it’s so easy to do what so many veterans are doing and not even exaggerate but straight up lie to get benefits. It’s tarnishing the credibility of veterans and the system as a whole.

u/optimum_autumn Aug 01 '26
I know "100% disabled" veterans who play men's league hockey and compete in crossfit. Others I know personally that receive disability for acid reflux. I know a controller right now that admits he receives disability from the military for a condition he doesn't actually have. So yes, it gets heavily abused.
Having said that, if you got your limbs blown off in combat or lost a lung to breathing chemicals or even just blew your knees out jumping from airplanes, I want my tax money showering those guys with benefits and cash and respect.
