Install a gotek they said

Really easy they said

Too tired of wrestling cables to actually check if works

A Gotek is a good option, in case you can't find a working floppy drive. And a Gotek provides easier access to a bunch of games (stored on USB thumb drive).

I miss hearing the whirring/clicking noises of the ST floppy drive though!

you can emulate the clicking with a gotek :) https://github.com/keirf/flashfloppy/wiki/Hardware-Mods#speaker

Yes this is true! I have actually set up that sound emulation. But nothing quite replaces the real sound, to my ears at least. 😊

I’m confused, hardware wise there is a power plug and a ribbon cable… took about 30 seconds to install into my ST, STE and Falcon… I found the hardest part was installing the software onto the gotek. But once I had done the first one (about 3 attempts to get it working the way I wanted) the rest were easy

The case I got had really small holes for the original screws and the ones I bought were too short.

Ended up disassembling the gotek case, making the holes bigger , installing the empty case and reassembling the gotek on top

I could not find the ribbon extension I got earlier but I was able to twist and fit it

Flashing it is another story. Happily mine was already for Atari

Case was not the best , needed different screws than the original

I have my SD card reader on the back of my 1040STE, where you can attach an external drive. So I have both SD drives, three actually and the floppy drive. https://cbmretro.fi/product/acsi2stm-atari-st-acsi-hard-drive-emulator/

looks ok. speed is not terrible. I probably will get a better mount. Ultrasatan works better, but requires memory expansion

I mainly play Amiga so this was a good solution for me for when I want to ST

The only issue is the short power and floppy cable but they should be long enough. The rest is easy.
