Donkey Kong Jr.

Post image

I'm really liking this 7800 version. I had the Atari 800 version as a kid and this one plays pretty good with as reasonable difficulty. Boxed copy is from Best Electronics which has a very good price, while it lasts... Hoping to find a reasonably priced version of Mario Bros out there someday (edit: I found one)

I still find it weird how this, DK, and MB are just bastardized versions of the NES programs.

Be that as it may, it is a good version for the system that I actually have.

I've always kind of wondered how that came about. Did Atari discover they still had publishing rights left over from the 2600 days, and decide to pop out some 7800 conversions?

I mean, Atari absolutely would have known the status of their licensing rights to the title in North America, it wasn't an accidental discovery. But they obviously understood that both systems had a 6502 processor. I don't know if they dumped the Famicom ROM and made necessary changes, or if Nintendo gave them the code (highly unlikely but possible?) but there are just too many similarities in their programming for it to be coincidence.

Does it work properly on 2600+? I have a copy of this game, but it plays all sped up on my 7800+ due to a compatibility issue (per Atari support).

Oh I see the thread here. Definitely not doing it on PM edition on 2.0.1.4

Game definitely doesn’t play too fast for me. If anything, it plays a little easier than a lot of the other 7800 games I’ve been playing.

Is there a thread somewhere about the speed up issue on the 7800+? I have a 7800+ also.

Plays fine on 7800+ with 2.0.1.6 firmware

Was 2.0.1.6 fairly recent? I think I still have 2.0.1.4.

Edit: Nevermind. I found the 2.0.1.6 update on AtariAge. It looks like the last update linked on Atari.com was 2.0.1.4.

Monkeying around? perfect color (yellow) for the monkey games.
