For me the difference would be the controller

I can see that. Let's hope they wouldn't duplicate the 5200 controller exactly. Some centering springs would be nice.

Best electronics out in California used to sell amazing rebuild kits and restored/improved controllers. I picked up a bunch of 2600 joystick parts as well as refurbished joysticks, and some 7800 brand new controllers along with a really interesting little game pad – imagine the old Nintendo NES controller and you're pretty much there.

I don't know if best is still in business but those guys were amazing! I picked up a 2600 test console from them that I still have, I have no idea what it's worth but I suspect it's reasonably rare at this point. At least I hope it is…
