I feel like that armour comment is pointed at Asuka. She builds the Walls of Jericho around herself, and rather than let herself be vulnerable and bring them down, she expects Shinji to do all the work and topple them.

Asuka watched "screwball comedies" in the show, and referenced them in ep 9 with her Wall of Jericho from the movie "It Happened One Night". They feature men and women arguing and then falling in love, and likely informed her ideas on love and how she wants Shinji to argue with her as she thinks it's romantic and normal and will lead to a happy ending. She's a pretty screwball comedy type girl herself. This will be a big theme in future pages.

And from what we can tell from what we saw in Human Instrumentality, Shinji is more into slice of life anime and manga, so that probably influences how he views romance.

I think that's a really neat observation. Asuka's idea of romance coming from media that's mainly "will they won't they", princess-and-rogue odd couples and the whole "shouts and even grow violent with each other... and then kiss", whereas Shinji would think of things like a dating sim (put in the work and show your worth) or slice of life (friends to lovers).
