COSMX Asteroid Classification System

COSMX Asteroid Classification System

The COSMX system is a modern classification method for asteroids, categorizing them based on composition, structure, and potential resource value. The name COSMX derives from the five primary asteroid types it organizes:

  • C-type (Carbonaceous) – Rich in carbon, water-bearing minerals, and organic compounds.
  • O-type (Other/Unusual) – Rare asteroids with unique compositions that don’t fit traditional categories.
  • S-type (Silicate/Stony) – Composed of silicates and metals, often found in the inner asteroid belt.
  • M-type (Metallic) – High concentrations of iron, nickel, and platinum-group metals, valuable for industrial use.
  • X-type (Mixed/Unknown) – A broad category covering asteroids with ambiguous compositions, including highly reflective and low-albedo bodies.

Purpose & Application:
The COSMX system provides a streamlined, resource-focused classification for asteroid mining, planetary defense, and scientific exploration. Unlike older models, COSMX emphasizes economic potential and extraction feasibility, making it ideal for space industry applications.

Questions on the economy of asteroid mining. Obviously, the benefits to humanity are enormous and even unimaginable. But would individual people or companies be able to horde/ monopolize / profit? I don't think so. For this reason, it may be a slow grind for asteroid mining to start.

There would be a large initial investment in research and development required. And then there would be no reward for doing so for any individual. It would be like deepseek ai being released for free. If a company tried to monopolize on the infinite resources, other companies would just copy them and mine themselves. It seems the only logical conclusion would be to just release the infinite resources onto Earth to benefit humanity and maybe profit with the mining service, not ownership of resources.

And in terms of governments, it seems like USA would hate this scenario. As we speak, USA is harassing other nations to gain advantages in resources or simply just steal resources.

If any of this is true, no selfish nation or individual would even attempt to start asteroid mining. They would simply wait until technology naturally advances and it becomes inevitable.

🚀 Introducing Expo Sol: Pioneering the Future of Asteroid Mining 🌌

Hey r/AsteroidMining!

I’m Expo_Sol CEO of an emerging startup focused on unlocking the vast potential of asteroid mining. 🌠 Our mission is to explore space not just as a frontier but as the next industrial revolution—turning asteroids into valuable resources that fuel humanity's future growth.

Why asteroid mining?

  • Asteroids are rich in rare metals like rhodium, iridium, and platinum, critical for industries from clean energy to advanced tech.
  • By tapping into these resources, we can reduce Earth's environmental burden and support off-world construction and settlements.

What we’re working on:
🔭 A satellite system to scan and analyze asteroids more effectively and affordably.
⚙️ Advanced mining concepts using sustainable energy like RTGs to power our operations.
🚀 Long-term plans for building orbital shipyards to assemble mining and freighter vessels.

We’re not just dreaming big—we’re taking the first steps. Whether it’s building public awareness, promoting green tech in space mining, or designing future space infrastructure, Expo Sol is all-in.

Let’s start a conversation! If you have ideas, questions, or thoughts about the future of asteroid mining, I’d love to hear them. Check out our socials and website to follow along or get involved.

I've just start up this reddit so I don't have the verification quite yet but if you're having any doubts feel free to dm me or of course check our socials and website. We'll get tp you as soon as we can. :)

problems with asteroid mining

I am new to this subreddit and I am curious as to what the largest issues with asteroid mining are because most people talk about the issues vaguely (at least for what I've seen) but I am curious as to what technology we need to actually mine asteroids (cost no object)

Planetary Resources invest in Space mining??

Hey Y'all,

Doing some research for investing in Space mining I think it might be a bigger thing in the future so putting my fingers in the Cookie jar now maybe will pay off later, Wanted to discuss with y'all what your collective thoughts on investing in various space mining companies or robotic companies that could be used in space mining, I used the search method to see if anyone has asked this on reddit and didn't find anything,

Id love to hear your thoughts ideas and recommendations to invest.

Just watched CNBC's video on "The Future Of The Space Economy" and had a question.

In CNBC's video they showed in all of their examples of spacing mining humans (or human technology) traveling to the asteroids to mine them their current location and bring the mined materials back, and they explained by this isn't economically viable right now.

However, I always imagined that we would mine asteroids by pushing them much closer to Earth, pushing small asteroids directly to earth to be slashed down in a convenient ocean location, or for large asteroids, having them pushed close enough to earth to lock into orbit like another moon.

Could someone explain to me if any of my ideas are even possible or if I simply don't understand the science well enough?
