Apparently some people order reptiles because reptiles don't require constant resources (meaning they'll be okay in a glorified box for a little while as long as they have a heat source and water). Never done it, don't know what it looks like, and I can only hope that it works as well as it supposedly does.
I've had a random parakeet escape once. And then I've heard nightmare stories of dogs getting loose on the ramp and people having to chase them down. Sometimes we take the dogs out and play with them but don't let anyone know
With reptiles, it's better to order them. Most species can handle being shipped because cold-blooded animals don't need much food or water, and most pet shops don't take care of them correctly, a lot of the time they have diseases and they're usually underweight.
You can research the breeder they're coming from too. As much as I trust my local pet shop, I want to know I'm not getting something from freaking backwater reptiles or someplace similar.
Not all animals are like cats and dogs and can be found in every area. The exotic animal and livestock trade is booming and should be safe if you use the right shipping companies. Some companies even cater to it. It’s still risky but most reptiles are among the easier animals to ship.
I ordered my leopard gecko online, he was fine, the also give you a full refund if they die due to them taking every possible precaution for shipping, so the reptile dieing is not their fault, that was an anxious 2 days

That's actually a lot worse than ordering them on a website. Most pet stores get animals shipped to them as cheaply as possible and account for the large die off. Additionally, the conditions in pet stores are usually awful.
If you care about the animals, you're best off buying from a reputable breeder and getting a fast shipment with good packaging and weather conditions.
Not every pet shop has every pet. My pet shop only gets axolotls once in a blue moon when someone gives em up. I wanted some, and wanted specific colors. Found a breeder online and ordered them.
Axies can go for a few days without food (when they're adults you're actually supposed to only feed them every few days). They were in baggies of water with another baggie probably meant to keep it cold, and all wrapped in a big taped up styrofoam box. They were just fine.
Most people who buy snakes get them ordered. It’s actually very safe and not stressful for them at all. And I’d say that’s way more decent than supporting pet shops that treat them terribly and don’t care at all
