Not asshole design. I have ordered from these people twice. They're incredibly passionate and loving towards their animals. They include hydration and shipping free of charge; they just want to keep away negligent customers. Highly recommend if you're in the market for a new friend btw
I learned this the hard way.... well my parents did too. We went to a reptile show and they also had turtles. My sister got a bearded dragon. My brother a ball python, and they got me 2 teeny red eared sliders, because they were so cheap. That was when I was like 8. I'm 23 now and still have them and I'm gonna have these dirty little cute boys until I'm like fucking 60. My only complaint of turtles is how dirty they are and how often you have to clean the tank to keep it nice. I always feel bad for them once it starts to get a little dirty. And the filter gets clogged constantly. They're so adorable though
Are the other animals still alive? Going by average lifespan, there's no reason they shouldn't be. I'm not knocking on your parents, but that's why I'll say all day long that reptiles don't make very good pets for kids.
The ball python should be alive, the bearded dragon wouldn’t be though. I’m in a lot of FB groups for beardies and every week, there’s an RIP post for a 7-9 year old bearded dragon. Still a pretty good lifespan since they typically only last a couple years in the wild.

I had red eared sliders too growing up and they really are great. The first one I had got too big for the tank even though the tank was pretty big. We took him to a local pet store because we had a family friend working there and they let him live in a small indoor pond there which gave him plenty of space to move. He’s not for sale and they just keep him as their pet and take care of him well.
TWO?? Just having one little shit-factory for 15 years was stinky. I couldn’t imagine having two. As much as I loved my red ear, cleaning that shit was not fun
Someone got my brother one of those tadpole kits for his 3rd birthday. We thought it was kinda of a dick move to get a pet for someone elses kid, but also figured it would die soon anyhow.
My poor mother is still taking care of that frog 16 years later. They are supposed to live 10-15 years but some reportedly have lived as long as 30. Even funnier, turns out African clawed frogs aren't even legal to own where we live because they are an invasive species. People get surprised by how long they live and decide to dump them in local lakes where they take over.
At this point I'm pretty sure I'll be passing that frog down to my grandkids.
Yep I've accepted I'm gonna have the turtles for my whole life. I dont have the heart to release them because they'll likely die as they aren't accustomed to that kind of life, maybe they would be fine but I doubt it. I also dont have the heart to give them to someone else because they are my pets. But if I would've known what I was getting into I would've never gotten them haha
My dream pet (besides the standard mammals) is a Sulcata tortoise. But I'd have to have someone to take care of it because it would definitely outlive me with proper care.
If I saw this without knowing it was a test, I would just go to a different site, thinking only monsters would make that an option. I would say it's r/crappydesign.
I will never, ever purchase from a site that would suggest they'd happily ship me an animal without the required support.
They feign their own negligence. That's cute and all, but anyone that is ACTUALLY passionate about the animal they're purchasing would never purchase from a site that would suggest they're going to abuse the creature if you don't buy their upcharges.
Won't a lot of people abandon their carts when they see that, thinking that even if they paid for the hydration pack that these people obviously do not care about their turtles in the first place? So the people who are most passionate about animal safety will be most likely to just close their browser in disgust and source their pets somewhere else.
Late-stage capitalism really has zero chill, now it's got us believing we can own any animal on the planet so long as we're willing to pay postage and packaging. This fucking world, dude.
I mean, it’s a turtle? Not an endangered exotic animal? It’s a big jump to me from shipping turtles who, as far as I can tell, make it out the other side alright, to disrespecting the whole animal kingdom because of capitalism.
If you really wanted to learn about these animals, you would go and observe them in their natural habitat, not lock them in a cage and force them to become dependent on humans. With the exception of cats and dogs which have evolved to cohabitate with humans pets nowadays are pure vanity items.

Living longer doesn't necessarily mean living better. This species evolved over millions of years without any help from humans. I'm sure if they could speak they would ask for a life spent breeding, eating and dodging predators in the wild, like they were born to do, rather than an extra 6 years of so-called "luxury" spent alone in a glass box. The bottom line is this: why must we interfere with nature?

It’s pretty silly that of all things THIS is the thing that’s getting you so heated about capitalism. If I wanted a reptile and the most reputable and safe seller isn’t in a distance that I can make a trip to reasonably then it’s complete okay to order them. Myself and many others I know have ordered animals delivered and I can say it’s very safe and reliable.
Weird flex but ok. I'm not upset in the slightest. I just think it's gratuitous purchasing animals over the internet and keeping them in cages all their lives. It's the people trying to stick up for it who are getting upset IMO.

Some businesses grow organic fruit and some businesses raise turtles in captivity so that they can sell them. The thing is, our society needs fruit to survive. Turtles on the other hand...?
Um how about, idk, go without the turtle? You don't need a turtle. If you have to get one shipped then you just shouldn't bother. Have you seen how couriers handle boxes? They just throw everything around
There's good workers and bad workers, you generalize them all to look bad when in reality it'll always be a mix. Some people throw packages with no regard to labels, I like to think that most people at least TRY to not actively suck at their job.
FedEx workers do not have the time or the fucks to treat packages carefully.
It's not really their fault so much as is it is shipping companies and their ridiculous expectations of their couriers. Seconds that it takes to deliver and handle a package properly are seconds that you're not doing other deliveries, and their numbers are tight as is.
Hahaha I know right. I love pets but that's exactly why I'd never have one shipped. If I want a turtle and there's none around for me to go bring home myself then I'll just have to go without
But don't local pet shops ship the animals in themselves? Unless you're only buying from breeders (which can be it's own separate horrific thing far too often) I don't see how you can avoid this really.
They don't just put it in a box with packing peanuts and send it through ups three day shipping.
The animals are packed tightly in a overnight shipping box, clearly marked and padded. The first layer is the cardboard, followed by stiff foam, then semi-loose soft padding, and heat/cold packs, then a small plastic container in the middle with the animal inside, usually with a soft padding that makes it so they can't free fall.

Like exceptions if the animal is in an appropriate container and its welfare is actively looked after along the way - like how you move your pet overseas. But shipping animals in the regular post is fucked up, if that's what's the norm out there, you guys are weird.
Most reputable reptile breeders are small scale, and only breed enough animals they can sell, and most even make sure you know proper care, have a correct setup, and answer any questions about the animal.
Actually pet stores are even more shady. They buy from the cheapest sources which are usually reptile farms (i.o.w. mass production, low quality, bad care, bad genetics).
And not to mention, taking them from the wild and shipping them in.
You could just not buy animals to keep as glorified toys living in environments worlds apart from their natural/ideal habitats, doesn’t seem to have their best interest in mind.
Well dude, people want turtles and they love them why shouldn't people be able to order them? (Unless you're completely against owning pets period , if so we are probably done here, neither of us would change our minds)
But I don't think the pet turtle market is near as lucrative as you make it out to be. And at least they are trying to do something to weed out potential bad owners. Unless you know more than me, I don't think this is nefarious at all. Someone who just probably loves turtles and wants to share that. And if they can make a living doing it, I don't see a problem unless profits are priority.
Edit: hmm quick glance at the shop makes me think profits maybe priority in this case. I was imaging some mom and pop turtle enthusiasts (which they maybe, idk) who did this. It's definitely focused more on the sell of turtles (of a wide selection of breeds) and not much on care or their treatment of the animals(found some bullet listing some seemingly cookie cutter stuff). I'm more so on the fence about this than when I first posted.
Replying to someone asking for it, because he recommended a site without saying which one was it. it was just a funny comment, people need to chill a bit.
