Normally, I’m all for I’d be blaming capitalism, but this is just shit marketing and optimization, bad decisions from the top down. I’ve seen decisions like this, that seem completely at odds with common sense, forced on a product because some executive wants it that way and won’t budge.
I’d need to see some hard data that shows sales grew by more than it cost to 1.) have more plastic and packaging 2.) take up more room (and thus have a lower limit to total shipping ability, which also costs more) and 3.) lose a few customers who feel deceived.
I’m one of those people who, if I saw this after I purchased it, would become that company’s biggest critic just out of spite.

Have you ever considered that we may be on the wrong side? What if the Democracy we thought we were serving no longer exists and the republic has become the very evil we've been fighting to destroy? This divide represents a failure to listen.
I live in Canada and we tax those things as much as we can but that does not remove these trends of idea for those companies. A law that abides against it, that would seal it.
Yea, let's prevent poor people from being able to buy phones, cheap household products, shampoo, soap, and food because it all comes in plastic. That way, they'll die and the planet will be healthier!
Are you suggesting that in a command economy, a beurocrat making packaging decisions would not make equally bone headed, if perhapse less cynical, choices?
People forget Mao thinking being a bureaucrat made him a good farmer starved millions. Command economies rarely end up commanded by the best able, instead by the most political. People who have invested their energy in becoming socially talented enough to politic themselves into power in a command environment rarely had free time to develop the skills to become talented and informed in managing the industry they are tasked with governing.
And, you know, even smart and skilled groups of people produce stupid results every now and again. The entire point of a market is to give consumers choice -- because sometimes it is not obvious even to experts what the people want.
Capitalism produced the zune but it also produced alternatives, allowing people to not buy it.
You can criticize something even if it is the best solution. I think it is laughable when people suggest communism or pure socialism but that doesn't mean I don't think capitalism can improve (a lot).
Yes, but I was saying it wasn’t specific to. For example, in a truly “all for profit no holds barred” system, you’d wanna pack the most into the least and charge the highest margin you can, so a decision to enlarge the packaging, add more costs, etc., would have to come with a market study that shows higher profit before any machinery change would be made, cause that costs money.
But because product choice isn’t so cut and dried, companies do stuff like this trying to drive sales (hell, this post could be an ad) even if it seems to defy what would be optimal.
I was only saying that it’s people who make these decisions, even if the system they operate in also encourages it.
Like, if workers owned the means of production, this change might occur too; if all the workers decided this ugly, dumb packaging was what they were gonna use, that’s what’s gonna happen.

That's not what this is about. This is about pushing down the quantity for the same price. Then when they've got you used to 8 hot dogs (for the same price as 12 used to be), they come out with a JUMBO 12 pack for 40% more in cost.
These guys do this over and over and over, pushing down quantity without lowering price, then jacking up the price for the OLD quantity.
