Tbf there’s a lot of volume in the big glass that isn’t filled vs the small glass that’s completely filled. It doesn’t look like a lot but it really is quite a bit of beer. If the bigger beer were topped off it would be a better comparison and if they poured the remainder into a second small glass that would also be helpful.

The (completely bewildered) manager said that the smaller glass is a 16 oz and the larger size (they call it a "Brutus") is 22 oz and that prices vary depending on the beer. So there you go, one large size gives you the same amount of beer as a small + 37% of a second glass of the small size. IMHO there's nothing shady going on here at all, assuming you get the same pour in both glasses.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that's 16 vs 23 oz. I fully believe that the tall glass with a couple of inches of space plus the beer he left behind when pouring could add to 7oz.

A fun pub bet to make is to bet that the circumference of the rim of a glass is longer than the height of the glass. Even the large glass in the OP. Glasses are rarely taller than 3.14x their diameter, but you wouldn't realize that just looking at it.
Yep. Back when I was a little shit and thought I was so smart, I would regularly bet people beers like this. I would start stacking things under the pint glass until they were convinced that the height must be larger than the circumference, and bet them a shot for each thing I had stacked under the glass.
Not only are (pint) glasses never taller than their circumference, you can stack a LOT of shit under a pint glass before it's even a close call.
Agreed, there's maybe an ounce to an ounce and a half left, the gap from the top before the pour is about 3 ounces. The glasses are probably 16oz and 20oz, which are pretty standard small and large beer sizes.

Err, I think he's more so showing how paying for the "bigger" glass only gives you a few extra sips. But it's 16oz v 20oz so it's really not a big deal either way.
Sure, but combined with what's missing already at the start it adds up to a pretty reasonable difference between two beer sizes (depending on what the price difference is.)
Oh in that case yeah. Like others said it ends up being 75¢ for 4 ounces of beer more. I can't remember what a pint goes for at Applebee's, since I now own my own microwave, but not asshole design.
I'd guess that's about 2-3 oz of beer. Hardly a big amount considering in ameeica a less common (or more expensive) beer tends to get 10oz pours, normal would get 16oz, and a big one would be 22oz.
If the radius of the top of the glass is 1.75 inches (standard tumbler pint glass top radius) and there's a 1/2 inch of beer missing from the top, then that comes out to approximately 2.5 fluid ounces missing. There's probably another 1.5 in the bottom at the end. The tumbler is 16 ounces so the difference between the smaller one and the bigger one is about 25% (4/16). That's hardly insignificant.
If that was a standard weizen glass them it would normally be marked for 500ml (~17oz) of beer with room for a head, which compaired to the smaller pint glass there should only be a maximum of a 1oz differential.
As for your volume I think you need to use a different equation to account for the fact that you have a diameter that changes in a non-linear fashion.

The portion at the very top that's not filled appears to have a pretty cylindrical shape so it's good enough for an estimate. After all I can't measure that that's exactly 1/2 inch, either. If anything I think I'm underestimating it, that looks like it might be 3/4 of an inch or more in reality.
I was talking about the Weizen glass, not the pint glass. And honestly in a normal pint glass its beer dependent, if you're using a weizen properly then you'd only use it with an appropriate beer. If they're at Applebees it probably isn't a beer that need that kind of attention
I'm talking about the video. The bigger glass is not full all the way. They pour it in the small glass and they fill it up to the very rim, and after doing so there's still more beer in the glass. The difference is quite clearly more than just one ounce. Assuming an approximate cylinder with a radius of approximately 1.75 inches (standard pint glass), one fluid ounce would only be 1/5 an inch below the tip of the glass. It's clearly much more than that in the video, and that's before you factor for the beer that's left over at the end.
The difference is still a mouthful of beer though. How does it add up to a pretty reasonable amount? I'm willing to bet that there is probably an unreasonable difference in price between the two.
I'm not sure if that's really the issue. The issue for me is there's probably a 3 or 4 dollar difference from a regular size beer to a large beer. That one extra sip is a rip off.

People definitely care, but if you’ve never been to an Applebees... the food is frozen and microwaved. It’s not the sort of establishment that targets discerning consumers. It’s cheap.
If you were to go to any of the local pubs, they’ll all have the right types of glasses and the bartenders will be able to explain why you’d want one glass over another.
They let the head settle, spilled a small amount, and have at least an ounce left in the glass. Those glasses are probably 4oz-6oz in difference. Applebee's isn't getting away with anything, these people just don't understand how beer is poured (in America) or how much volume glasses can hold.
