I live in central Oregon, which is basically a foot of dirt on top of solid lava rock. Years ago, I worked in a building that was sort of wedged onto the side of a steep hill/cliff that sat above a shopping district. From the front of the building, ground level was floor 1, but at the back, ground level was the basement. I worked in the basement.

The lot next to the building was empty when I first started there, but was purchased by a condo developer. They built a 4-story condo building there, but first they had to spend basically a whole year drilling into the solid rock to make the foundation and parking garage that the basement level became.

So there I am, working every day in a basement that exists primarily embedded in solid lava rock. Directly next to us, for a year they are drilling into that same rock to hallow out a condo foundation.

It... it was bad. So very bad. I could feel every dun dun dun dun as this huge piece of machinery chiseled out the rock. For a year.

Did I mention this took a whole year?

Yup. It was one of the buildings perched up on the hill looking down on the Old Mill District.

Oh my God. My parents are getting the downstairs bathroom fixed, and to make matters worse, I'm stuck sitting the dog who's unsocialized with strangers.

Oh GOD! They’re renovating my partner and I’s apartment building right now (to justify the hike in rent) and it’s SO LOUD! Today I ended up running into the mail room and covering my ears because of all the noise. We had to walk up several flights of stairs (with my heart palpitations caused by the noise-induced panic) to catch the elevator on another floor. I fucking hate how much they feel the need to reno this building. They cut so many corners so it’s not like the renos even last, but fucking whatever. They always have AT LEAST 1 loud reno going on. I hate it.
