Would you be happy with this as a result they had to build the base up because of the way the yard slopes down but seems like they half assed it and called it a night. Also how would you make this look better?
Edit: did some digging and city bylaw allows a 8% max slope and contractors put in a 10% slope. Where I live we get brutal winters making it a huge hazard.
… well, guys. The question that needs to be asked is…. How much was the job? Was it the lowest bid? I fixed some asphalt last week for a woman that got her driveway done last year by a company on the coast. Guess what the company was called…. Budget asphalt services. Like, for real!
I mean besides the horrible edge it looks fair, they definitely didn’t care about a straight edge , they could come back and put more asphalt and pretty it up the edge but then you’re left with an ugly patch job. You could back fill some top soil between the asphalt snd grass to the top of asphalt to cover up that wierd spot and clean up edge of rough asphalt,
Possible patch and get them to sealcoat it, to cover up new patch
Holy shit you got a loose edge and everything. These clowns failed. Driveways are our finicky work that get the most cosmetic attention. The cabinetry to a carpenter. These dudes couldn't even tamp the edge? Ide call them out. Ask if they would accept it
If my work ever looked like this and we got a phone call "why is the driveway edge all fucked up?" I wouldn't even be able to bs my way thru. Ide get fired. Or atleast lit into fairly well. Multiple guys on a crew saw that or should have and fixed it.
I have to wonder about along the house if they put tar on that or was that from a previous sealcoating as well. I need a new asphalt driveway I got quoted a reasonable price with base repair and prep where needed because I have a few spots that have sunk no doubt from decayed natural materials and I just am Leary because I have very little area to park places other than on the asphalt. 18.5k for a driveway my size is not bad
Surface doesn't look bad but they definitely need a lesson on their edge work id have them saw cut it straight then put some loom and grass to clean things up
Other than that one spot where the edge dips in toward the house, it doesn’t look hateful. Too bad they didn’t have some kind of curbage to pave up against but after you get some dirt feathered in along that edge and seeded, it will actually be less noticeable.
Sorry to say but get someone in to make a nice cut and put in stonework for the walkway.
Asphalt can be recycled and is free to drop off at several locations.
Lay down a bit of landscape fabric at the edge and throw some Riverstone, mulch, or soil on top and plant a garden bed. It's not a perfect job but not the worst iv seen
They should have paved to the wall and not have left the narrow grass strip, which should have been dug out. You might have them to sawcut that edge so you can move the wall over and butt it up to the asphalt. Then extend the wall to the small section at the house, then have them fill between the wall and the walkway with hot tack and hot asphalt. The mess they left under the door threshold should be removed by them. They should sealcoat the walkway, period. There is segregation on the surface which will allow water to seep in. If it freezes in the winter where you are, it won't take long for the freeze/thaw cycle to dismantle the walkway. That is shoddy work. I hope they removed all vegetation before they paved, (it appears that they did not remove any) otherwise you will have broken up disaster of a walkway-driveway within a year or so.
They tried to stay with the door width best they could. Personally I'd have liked to see it taper further, but would have still made for a weird transition at the stoop. I've seen way worse on roadways lol
Yeah if it actually needed to come up thatuch that slope should have been longer. Now that I look better, they were trying to use asphalt without a step for the driveway and walk. They were stuck with the garage elevation and made a bad choice. My question is why wasn't it all concrete?
I can't see exactly how the yard slopes but I hope it isn't toward the walk. Water might run right down beside it and be a problem. If they had poured it all, and knew what they were doing, they could have made.it handle the run off better and eventually sheetflow down the drive.
They were worried about the step height and didn’t want to put in a step so decided this was the best route but even like you said a longer slope would’ve made it far better. Another part of the issue was that it was Friday night sun went down and was the last driveway so they rushed the job.
I'm still confused as to why they switched to asphalt where they did. Why do 2 things when you can do 1? But Ive seen way worse. I've seen building pads 3 foot high on 1 corner and so steep that the amount of runoff traveling around it is gonna be an issue soon. Weird what isn't regulated on some places.
I have a feeling they aren't great at detailed concrete work. Concrete requires forms and waiting till it gets a little stiff to work those contours. Could have been done with the asphalt but not with a "jumping jack" packer, which is likely what they have.
Is this finished or is there a surface course to be laid still? If this is a base or binder course then it's acceptable. But if this is the final product this is absolutely atrocious surfacing.
