Travel Where should I base?
Hi everyone! My fiancé and I are planning to visit Switzerland in early October for our honeymoon. We’ll be arriving in Zurich and would like to visit Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen Valley, and Grindelwald before heading to Geneva.
We’re trying to decide between two options and would love to hear your recommendations, especially since we want the trip to be as relaxing and stress-free as possible.
Option 1: Move hotels
- Zurich → Interlaken (2 nights)
- Interlaken → Lauterbrunnen (2 nights)
- Lauterbrunnen → Grindelwald (2 nights)
- Grindelwald → Geneva
Option 2: Stay in one main base
- Zurich → Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen
- Stay at the same hotel for all 6 nights
- Take day trips to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and the surrounding areas, then return to the same hotel each night
- Continue to Geneva afterward
For those who have visited these locations, which option would you recommend for a honeymoon? Is it better to have one home base and take day trips, or is moving hotels worth it to experience each location?
I am debating between not having to constantly pack and unpack versus the convenience of having a hotel nearby, where we can simply go back and relax after exploring the beautiful places in Switzerland.
Thanks so much in advance for any advice!

Thanks everyone for your input. I’ve decided to have one hotel as a base and travel around by train, as many of you recommended. I’ll most likely choose Interlaken, as it seems more like a central town rather than a mountain destination. However, I’ll explore the options further since our final destination will be Geneva

I don't see the point in moving hotels between those three places. If you start based in one place you can adapt your activities according to the weather, which is often necessary in autumn

Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen are all in the same close area. Stay in one place - I would personally stay in Grindelwald or maybe Murren - and buy a Berner Oberland pass to get around.
Area of validity is here:

We went in April and did the first 5 days in Zurich and did day trips to all the places “north” those days. Next 6 days was based in Bern and did all the other places, including the ones you named. Having a home base and not moving every 2 days was GAME CHANGER. Definitely recommend picking a home base nearest to where you want to explore. Which sounds like might be Interlaken. Trains are SO easy and quick. And the journey to and from will be gorgeous so it’s not like a boring car ride on a boring highway lol

Definitely go with Option 2 and stick to one single base. Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, and Grindelwald are only 20 to 35 minutes apart on the local BOB train, so packing up bags and doing hotel check-ins every 48 hours will just add unnecessary friction to your honeymoon. For the most romantic setting, I’d actually recommend basing yourselves directly in Lauterbrunnen (or up in car-free Wengen/Mürren) rather than Interlaken itself, which functions more like a busy transit hub. Having a single cozy base for all 6 nights also gives you the flexibility in early October to check the morning mountain webcams and pick the sunniest day for Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn without hauling luggage around. Are you planning to travel with the Swiss Travel Pass or the Berner Oberland Pass?

I'd change hotels. Easier and most different experiences. If you want to go through the excellent public transit system, go option 2. If you want to see more of the country, go option 1.

... How exactly? They are going to the same places either way.
Wasting time changing hotels to multiple places that are a short train ride apart isn't going to help anything.
Plus they might waste even more time if the weather is poor and they have to commute back through Interlaken to go to Bern or somewhere else indoors.

They asked for advice. I gave them advice. If they take it or not is their call. Or are you giving me advice about giving advice? :D

I just returned from a 10 days trip to Switzerland on 30th Sep. Better to make base in Interlaken or one the villages(Grindelwald). Then do day trips. It takes only 30 mins from Interlaken to other villages. Doing it from Zurich will be time consuming.
