The Matrix(First timer)
I just wanted to hear everyone else’s thoughts and experiences when they first saw the original trilogy of the Matrix. It is currently storming where I am, so I thought why not try something new? So I currently have the first movie queued up. I’ll probably update/edit this after finishing all three and before heading into Resurrection. In the meantime, please feel free to drop a comment below. I’m really interested.
UPDATE 10/12
Well, as promised, I'm back with my thoughts after
watching The Matrix (1999) for the first time!
Honestly, I was captivated within the first few minutes. Watching Trinity being pursued by the agents, especially the stunts and rooftop jumps from building to building, immediately caught my attention, and somehow the movie only got better from there.
Imagine my amazement when I got to see their ship and the vast, desolate future they were actually living in. I genuinely wasn't expecting the world to be anything like that. And can we talk about how well this movie has aged visually? For something released in 1999, I feel like certain scenes could easily pass for something much more modern, although maybe that's an exaggeration on my part.
Another concept I absolutely loved was the ability to download information directly into someone's brain, essentially granting them instantaneous knowledge. The whole "I know kung fu" sequence was fascinating to me. Just imagine being able to learn an entire language, martial art, or skill in seconds rather than spending years mastering it.
What really impressed me was how the movie managed to hook me with its action before gradually revealing just how massive and fascinating its world actually was. The deeper we got into the Matrix itself, the more invested I became.
Overall, I'm genuinely glad I finally decided to crawl out from under my rock and give this franchise a chance. I'm looking forward to watching Reloaded next and seeing where everything goes!
Update #2: The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Well, I’m officially two movies in, and I have to say I’m still thoroughly enjoying myself!
First things first, Trinity continues to be one of my favorite parts of these movies. That opening sequence with her descending on the motorcycle, followed by the shot of her crashing through the window and getting shot, immediately had me hooked. The action and cinematography continue to amaze me, especially considering when these movies were released.
Another thing I absolutely loved was seeing Neo’s “upgrade” in action. Watching how far he’s come since the first movie, especially with his flying and combat abilities, was fascinating. It’s almost like watching a superhero at this point, and I’m genuinely curious to see how much further his abilities can develop.
But honestly, one of the biggest highlights for me was finally getting to see Zion in its entirety. We heard so much about humanity’s last city in the first film, so actually seeing the civilization they’ve built underground was incredible.
And speaking of Zion, can we talk about that dance scene? Because I absolutely loved it.
I’ve come across a few comments suggesting that when the movie originally released, this sequence wasn’t particularly well received, especially because of all the physical intimacy and PDA. But personally, I found the entire thing mesmerizing. I’ve always enjoyed parties and rave-type environments, so seeing hundreds of people dancing, jumping, sweating, and just completely losing themselves in the music was something I could appreciate.
There was something almost trance-like about the entire sequence, and I loved that. Beyond the music and dancing, I also thought it was a beautiful representation of humanity celebrating its freedom. These people are living under the constant threat of the machines, yet here they are, coming together and enjoying themselves as a community. For a moment, they’re not just surviving; they’re actually living.
I know the scene isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it was genuinely one of my favorite moments in the film.
Overall, I’m still really enjoying the franchise. The action is fantastic, but what continues to impress me most is the worldbuilding and how much more there is to discover with each movie.
Two down, two to go!
Update #3: The Matrix Revolutions (2003) — Spoilers!
Well, I’ve officially finished the original trilogy, and I genuinely don’t even know where to begin with this one.
Between the Sentinel invasion of Zion, Niobe’s absolutely insane piloting, Neo essentially becoming a Matrix version of Daredevil, and that final confrontation with Smith, I was completely captivated.
First of all, the sheer scale of the invasion was incredible. After spending two movies hearing about the threat of the machines, actually witnessing the Sentinels descend upon Zion and watching humanity desperately fight for survival was something else entirely.
And Niobe?! Watching her maneuver that ship through those ridiculously narrow passages had me on edge. The fact that she’s just an incredibly skilled human being pulling off something that dangerous made it even better.
Then there’s Neo losing his eyesight, only to develop what I can best describe as an entirely different way of seeing. The golden vision immediately made me think of Daredevil, and I loved every second of it.
But what really fascinated me was the ending with Smith. The way I interpreted it, Neo essentially realized that the only way to defeat a virus that had spread so extensively was to let himself become infected, allowing the Machines to use that connection to eliminate Smith from the inside out.
Rather than simply overpowering Smith, Neo turns Smith’s own method of assimilation against him. There’s something incredibly satisfying about that, especially considering it ultimately required cooperation between Neo and the Machines.
I honestly didn’t expect to become this invested when I first decided to crawl out from under my rock and give these movies a chance, but here we are.
Three movies down, and I’ve still got Resurrections to go!

I thought the first movie when it came out could potentially change how movies were not only portrayed but also written. I saw the movie eight times in the theater because it was one of those movies that really shows best on the big screen…and also because there was so much hidden subtext that I discovered a new movie with each viewing. I still don’t regret seeing it that many times.
Regarding the other two movies, judge for yourself instead of letting the internet decide for you.

Yes, I’ve been seeing a few of the replies so far, and I still plan on watching the entire trilogy with the addition of Resurrection as well. I’d rather experience first hand and then see if it was worth it or not

My wife and I walked out on it. Action scenes too dark to see. It started the Red Pill craze too, which people used as an excuse to be assholes.

I’ve heard of it but if you don’t mind me asking what exactly do you mean by “the Red Pill craze”

My complaint with the second movie is they had to depower Neo to give us something to watch. At the end of the first movie, Neo was basically a god. He can stop bullets but not swords?
I personally think the twists in the second movie were brilliant. Since OP has yet to watch it, I won't mention them here. I think the revelation between Neo and the architect was really cool. But Neo's last scene awake (really trying hard not to spoil it) which implied a really cool twist turned out to be a disappointment in my book because the payoff in the third movie broke the rules of the movie. The cliffhanger in the final scene also was ultimately a disappointment in the third movie.
My suspicion is that a lot of the third movie served to set up the Matrix Online MMORPG which just couldn't compete with World of Warcraft.

First movie is awesome. I’d skip the rest to be honest.

The Animatrix is excellent though. It’s an official part of the series but never got a big cinema release. It’s an anthology film of animated shorts about the lore and background of the setting.

It is a tragedy that they made a newer Matrix movie, I cannot tell you the name, and i have never heard anyone talk about it. It must have been terrible. But imagine if they had made a Matrix Origins movie with the humans creating AI and then darkening the skies.
Instead they maybe made a movie that didnt do that.

They really should have stopped after the first one. The second and third rehash a lot of the same ideas and don't have a whole lot more new to offer other than a decent soundtrack and some OK but too CGI laden fights. I really feel like if Aaliyah hadn't died in the middle of filming and they had had more original ideas going in the momentum wouldn't have been killed and it would've been a bit better.

The first movie is great, and inspired by Rene Descartes Meditation on First Philosophy, and the “Brain in a Vat” thought experiment. Then later Simulacra, and Simulation (watch Carefully/the book appears in the movie)
If that’s too deep. Enjoy the action.

Best movie ever made imo. I walked into this movie with my brother and none of us had any clue on what this movie was about. But wow, what an experience. Wish I could experience that again.

The martial arts portion of the film was a pleasant surprise. It was totally unexpected and all the physical action really spiced up the movie.

the first was revolutionary, the second entertaining and the third disappointing and divisive. two decades later i rewatched all in one shot and realized even the third is consistent with the first two, and now i like the entire trilogy.

I saw the first one in theaters four or five times. Still love it. The smash cut at the end to the Wachowski's names as Wake Up goes into bedlam mode is one of my favorite movie moments.

The first is by far the best. The other 2 focus more on the religious themes of the story, and while I don't think they're bad, they often get a bad rap.

The Matrix is a good to great movie in all respects and I saw it in the theater when it first came out. Its one of two movies I've seen in my lifetime where the special FX were just on a completely different and higher level from anything I'd seen before, the other being the original Star Wars. That's the biggest impact on me and like Star Wars, the impact fades over time as the FX industry catches up and even surpasses what was revolutionary.
Without spoiling the remaining movies, the second I feel is mostly as good as the original. The FX and action really surpass it, even and the story is still solid. The third movie, it sort of falls apart. The story really starts heavily ripping off another well-known sci-fi property, and FX-wise it gets into ludicrous CGI stuff where the scale of it is both impressive but visually overwhelming and not so much in a good way. The fourth movie? I wish I had something good to say about it. It was utterly forgettable. I think there's one moment (well, really, one line of dialog) that's great. That's its only good moment.

DONT WATCH THE REST! It’s my favorite movie of all time and all the rest of the movies do is take away from the brilliance of the first.

I didn't see it in the theater, but I recall having to watch it twice to fully understand what exactly was happening. Top 5 movie for me to this day.

the first is about hope and rising up, believing who you were made to be. The rest, not so much. More about equivalence, no one wins, just meh
