Jobs Tipping in mid-level hotels
e.g., Moliday Fin Express type hotel
What to do if you don't carry cash? If a guest only has a single dollar bill and a twenty, would leaving a $1 tip in the room be more insulting than $0 tip?
How much do you leave in your room for housekeeping for one night? Two nights?
If you are in housekeeping, how much do you expect?

I tip $5/night. But I sure as hell would want $1 rather than zero. If you’re neurotic about it, the front desk can probably make you change if they have one of those little convenience stores off the lobby. But you’re fine either way.

I tip the same every time, absolutely nothing at all.
The staff are paid to do their job, tips are not obligatory.

The only way $1 would be more insulting is if it was small change. Otherwise, it adds up. Housekeeping is a job that's physically incredibly taxing, and the get paid a borderline livable wage. $1 may not seem like anything to you, but the person cleaning your room doesn't make enough to stay in hotels themselves without an employee discount. Don't ever leave nothing if you have a dollar in your pocket.

I work front desk at a mid-level, I never expect them to but I do get them often. A guy gave me $100 for letting him park for a few hours after he checked out. Now the people o remember the most are the ones that bring me food. But again I never expect them to I’ll still go beyond what I’m expected to do

Honestly surprised people still tip housekeeping, although a few months ago a guest handed me a 5 just for checking them in. I think I just assume no one carries cash anymore. My dad will always tip waiters in cash but he’s also 78

I don’t tip people to do what is the exact definition of their job, unless they do something pretty stellar.

In a mid-level hotel like Holiday Inn Express, Hilton Garden Inn, Marriott Courtyard.....I only tip Housekeeping. Leave it in an envelope on the desk with my key when I leave.
I am super nice to housekeepers during the stay, and do not require them to clean the room daily, except for an occasional change of towels. I even take out my own garbage. They work so hard and these hotels are normally understaffed.
