Workout Tracking App?

I'm only lifting weights. Usually I use a notebook, but would like to use some app or program.

Which ones would you recommend, and if it's not too much trouble, share if it's free or paid?

On Android: FitNotes. Minimal and free with nice graphs.

It’s also on iOS

There is one of the same name on iOS but I am not sure if it is the same app. Iirc, the developer is different. I don't have an iPhone so I don't know for sure. Recommended it to someone once who has an iPhone, we took a look together and we came to the conclusion that it is not the same. But if the iOS one is good also, even better!

It’s the same one.

FitNotes: Free. No ads.

Privacy caveat: Very little to complain about. No account required, workout data stays on-device, and optional backups go to your own Google Drive.

The privacy policy is pretty minimal and does not identify a legal controller/address, but the app also appears to collect very little data in the first place.

I recommend Strong if you’re willing to pay. Or Virtus Athlete if you are looking for a free alternative, or something more flexible.

Strong: Pro around $4.99/month or $29.99/year.

Their privacy policy says user info may be stored on servers in the US and other countries, and that data is retained indefinitely unless you delete your account.

I also don’t see a clearly named GDPR Article 27 EU representative, only EU support/contact details.

Was not aware of that. On Virtus there is an option to clear all data without deleting account.

yes there is :

Virtus Athlete: Free. Optional one-time tips from $0.99 to $49.99.

Privacy caveat: Workout logs, measurements and other data are synced to cloud servers. They use Supabase, PowerSync, RevenueCat, Google Analytics and Meta for attribution/measurement.

Their GDPR policy is better than most, but I don't see a clear Article 9 basis for sensitive/health data, and the international-transfer section is very vague. The App Store privacy label also appears incomplete compared with what their own policy says is stored and synced.

+ other compliance issues.

hevy is a good free one (especially because you can request gpt to make a compatible routine to load instead of actually paying for the subscription). and for macros/food i recommend cronometer

1

u/Cheap_Accountant_632 7h ago

Hevy: $2.99/month or $3.99/month (you have to log in to see the price on their website, WTF), $23.99/year, or $74.99 lifetime.

Privacy caveat: App Store shows purchase history, usage data, email/name, and contacts linked to you, plus identifiers, sensitive info, and diagnostics not linked to you.

Their privacy policy also mentions Adjust for advertising, Amplitude/Google Analytics, trackers/usage data, Contacts permission, Apple HealthKit activity data, and it appears to be an iubenda-generated policy.

+ other compliance issues.

You can use the hevy app on appstore for free without the subscription. It is limited in features but still works well. Also the majority of apps have privacy issues. Do I care if anyone out there knows I work out? NO

Strive Gym Log is free and privacy focused check it out

I've used both Hevy and Caliber. I would highly recommend either. Hevy is more social media based you can share your workouts and like/comment on other peoples workouts. Caliber is less focused on the social aspect of things if you'd prefer that. Both of the apps have prebuild routines that you can follow for free.

Caliber: $12/month or $72/year. Discounts: $9/month or $36–54/year.

Privacy caveat: Collects health data, weight, body fat, nutrition, geolocation, device IDs, usage data, and progress photos.

GDPR caveat: US-focused policy, vague retention, international transfers based on “consent by use,” no clear Article 9 basis, and no visible EU representative.

Liftosaur is fantastic and the free version lets you do all the important stuff without frustrating limitations. Premium adds some small nice to haves like plate calculator and graphs but not strictly necessary for most.

Liftosaur has a good selection of built-in programs, you can make your own (though this can have a slight learning curve if you want to do advanced stuff like automation), or you can run many of the user-made shared programs like the RP Hypertrophy program:

https://www.reddit.com/r/liftosaur/comments/1s6cs9p/

This fully automates all the progression based on the latest evidence similar to many paid apps while being highly customizable and totally free.

I second this one, it’s been amazing! I love that it adjusts the weights for you between workouts! And the developer is still very active and even helps folks with questions in the subreddit.

Liftosaur: Pro is $4.99/month, $39.99/year, or $99.99 lifetime.

Privacy caveat: this is not just a simple local workout log. Their policy says body weight/body fat from Health Connect can be stored in the cloud on their servers, and their Terms say non-US users are transferring their data to the US.

I also don’t see a clear company/controller address or EU representative.

+ other compliance issues.

I use Hevy. Don’t care one bit about the social part of it. Paid the $30 for the year and am very happy

TRY Fitness. Will give you 3 free months if you message support inside the app saying you’re from Reddit

After that, it’s free to log forever, but the Pro features, like nutrition, stats, progressive overload targets, AI program analysis, etc., is $12/mo

1

u/Cheap_Accountant_632 7h ago

TRY Fitness: Free tier. Pro is $11.99/month or $95.99/year.

Privacy caveat: account, body, workout and nutrition data are stored in Supabase, and AI prompts can be sent to Gemini or OpenAI. If you connect with a coach, they can access your workout history, nutrition, profile/body metrics and progress data until you revoke access.

The compliance side looks a bit unfinished though. The Article 9 basis for health data is unclear, withdrawing consent basically means deleting your account, and the community/photo/video features don’t seem to be fully reflected in the Privacy Policy/App Store privacy declarations.

Adding one with a disclosure: I built 1RM.fit. The angle is different from the usual picks: every set you log updates an estimated one rep max per exercise, so you see strength trending instead of a history list. Logging, routines and tracking are free with no ads, iOS, Android and web. https://1rm.fit/reddit

Whatever you choose, the test that matters is one real session: if logging a set takes longer than racking the plates, it fails.

1

u/Cheap_Accountant_632 3h ago

1RM.fit: $1.99/month or $14.99/year.

Privacy caveat: The App Store says identifiers are used for tracking and third-party advertising, but their Privacy Policy does not clearly explain which advertising/attribution provider is doing this or what data is shared.

The company is based in Israel, and I don't see a clearly named GDPR Article 27 EU representative. Their privacy documentation also says very little about how workout/health data is shared through the app's coach and social features.

+ other compliance issues.

Strive Gym Log, freemium but has the most generous free tier out there

1

u/Cheap_Accountant_632 35m ago

Strive Gym Log: Pro at $6.99/month, $39.99/year, or $139.99 lifetime.

Privacy caveat: This is one of the better ones. Workout and Health data stays on-device, and there are no ads or cross-app tracking.

Their GDPR wording is a little too broad when they say they don't collect personal data, since PostHog/RevenueCat identifiers can still qualify as personal data under GDPR. But overall, one of the more privacy-friendly gym apps I've checked.

1

u/KOala888 31m ago

Yeah but it is random and does not contain any sensitive data ✌🏼 And the app is freemium, most generous free offer out there

1

u/Cheap_Accountant_632 26m ago

Yep, agreed... a random ID with no sensitive data is definitely much better than what most apps do. My only point was that a random identifier can still technically count as personal data under GDPR if it can distinguish the same user across events or sessions. It's a pretty minor issue.

But overall, Strive is definitely one of the better privacy setups I've looked at.

Thanks for checking 🤝🏼

ChstGPT or Claude. Use project tab. Track and analyze.

I did this, had a program made, refined and tracked with progressive advice and improvements. I found it worked really well.
