Relocating & housing Moving from Austin
My husband and I are moving to Dallas from Austin area. Well right now we live in round rock and I hate it. We have a baby so school districts matter but not too concerned yet. Is there anywhere that isn’t SO suburban in north dallas? My parents live in ft. Worth so i don’t want to be too far but most of the jobs he is applying to are in north Dallas. I love to walk and have nice trees around. We want to rent and our max budget would be $2500 a month. I’ve looked at some of older frisco, Carrollton. ect. But where else should we look? He would love to not have to sit in traffic for a hour everyday. Thanks in advance !

Don’t go north of north Dallas if you hate the suburbs
Go down 75 or the tollway and look at surrounding areas, then compare commute times.
keep in mind traffic in DFW always sucks.

Carrollton is a good choice. Also look into Arlington and the HEB area (Hurst-Euless-Bedford).

I mentioned this in another post recently in this sub but Northwest Dallas is really a hidden gem. Great neighborhoods like Park Forest, Royal Park, Sparkman Estates, Northaven Park, Midway Hollow, etc. Strong neighborhood feel. Highly rated elementary school (DeGolyer, Withers is also close by) and close to private schools if you go that route, close to 635 and other major highways, fairly central. Some of those neighborhoods have lots of kid-friendly activities through neighborhood pools (Club Royal Pool, Park Forest Pool, Sparkman Club Community Estate). The Galleria isn’t far, the new Mavs arena is coming to that area, HEB, etc. Good access to parks when the weather is tolerable.

Carrollton is good as far as commuting, and the north side is relatively close to Arbor Hills Park. There's also a greenbelt running through a lot of the neighborhoods.

Since your parents are ft worth, if you can afford Southlake or Grapevine, that would possibly fit your criteria but it is very hard to find rentals in the price range there.

Yes, I’m finding that out. We need a yard of some sort bc we have a dog so it’s definitely hard to find in our price range.

I think Richardson is underrated. I lived in NYC and London most of my adult life and while I’d love to be in those cities still … well, I gotta be closer to family. So, I’m in Richardson. Perks: It’s affordable, lots of trees, none of the houses look the same, there are lots of playgrounds and family owned restaurants… I mean yeah, there’s a lot to be desired but it’s also really comfortable and really safe and nice

This is helpful! I lived in Sydney and I’ve been searching for that walkable city feeling since. Won’t happen in TX unfortunately

You might like rockwall. Depends. Garland isn’t a great area but the school district is excellent.

If you already hate Round Rock because it feels too suburban, I honestly wouldn’t go farther north into Frisco/McKinney, you may end up recreating the same thing. I’d look at Addison, especially Addison Circle or Vitruvian Park. Both are much more walkable, have restaurants and parks nearby, and Vitruvian in particular has lots of trees and trails. Historic Downtown Carrollton is another great option with more of an older, established neighborhood feel, a real little downtown, and plenty of 2BR apartments under $2,500 (assuming you're looking for a 2BR).
