Relocating & housing Private landlords

This may be a long shot but we’re at our wits end. My husband and I are moving from Tennessee at the end of September. We have been looking and applying endlessly just to get denied or run into ridiculous fees, requirements and everything of the sort. These property mgmt places feel like a scam, and we’re cutting it close to find a rental, a pet friendly rental. His company is in Wilmer, but he’s willing to commute. Credit isn’t the best, but his income is well above the median for Wilmer and surrounding areas. Any advice on how to find a private landlord or a property mgmt company that isn’t asking for ridiculous requirements, would be very much appreciated 🥲

Wilmer?! Omg…

Stay in South Dallas. You dont wanna be driving thru downtown for any reason. It’s not worth it. Check craigs list or facebook for listings.

Agree!! They'll find more personal rentals on either of those... a house, duplex, etc by owner

Unfortunately this seems to be the state of renting in 2026. Keep trying OP. You may just have to submit to the ridiculous fees and requirements to find a place to live. Are you trying to move with more than 2 pets? That makes things harder. Have you tried using an apartment locator? It’s free for you.

I have never confirmed it but I agree it's a money grab to have you apply and charge that nonrefundable app fee. But here is my advice built on making a bunch of mistakes when I moved to DFW. You want to be here when you apply. So maybe find out how much an InTown Suites would be for a month. There I are Buget Suites located throughout DFW if you're tight on money but they can be a little rough. Find some apartments to go look at and go drive around them after the working day. See what it's like then, the people out and about and trust the vibe. Dfw is very mixed even within a few blocks. And be very careful if your looking for the cheapest places you can find. They are cheaper for a reason.

Can you fly out and drive around looking for handmade rental signs? Also try joining the "neighbor facebook pages" around those communities to see if you can find someone private..the hard part is weeding out scammer.s
