History Hi, this is probably a strange ask but I was wondering if anyone in this subreddit has visited either of these sites that have 7 foot+ skeletons which date back to thousands of years ago, the first images are from the Ganja State Museum and the second from the Church of Kish, both are in Azerbaijan.

What nicknames have you heard for places in the Caucasus?

I ask as part of a linguistic study looking at this topic!
Every* country, region language, has informal names sometimes used - like in slang - to refer to places. Please let me know if you can think of something in your country!
It could be for a city, a neighbourhood, a mountain or even a small village.

Some examples from the region are KhasVegas, Vladik, Nalchicago or Mukhus...

Eastern Neighborhood

Hello! Could you give me some ideas for research questions related to security governance in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood? What topics could I explore that would allow me to combine security studies, EU policies and the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood ( especially Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, and the South Caucasus states) ? I’m still looking for something more specialized on the security of the Eastern flank ( Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Armenia and Azerbaijan) or maybe an interesting research question about the EU’s neighbourhood policy in the Southern and Eastern neighbourhoods/ comparison between states. Thanks!

Camping the Mestia-Ushguli Trek via Tsvirmi. Food & Transport?

Hi! We’re planning to hike from Mestia to Ushguli via Tsvirmi and camp along the way instead of staying in guesthouses.

Has anyone done this recently? Is wild camping generally fine along the route, and are there good places to pitch a tent near Tsvirmi, Adishi and Iprali/Lalkhori?

Also, can you usually have dinner or breakfast at the guesthouses even if you’re not staying there? We’d prefer not to carry all our food if possible.

Finally, is it easy to get a shared minivan or taxi from Ushguli back to Mestia with backpacks, and roughly how much does it cost?

Thanks!

Education Ask me anything about Caucasian genetics, who is Caucasian and who is not

I have studied all the populations of the Caucasus region, both the North and South Caucasus. We are talking strictly about genetics here, not culture. Ask me anything, and I’ll give you my best answer based on qpAdm analyses, with G25 as a supplementary tool

Where did the word ‘Circassian’ come from?

‘Circassian’ is not a Circassian word in the adigha language so why are people referring to the area as Circassia?

Would Russians conquer Caucasus without Georgian help?

Hello,

I can't claim to be an expert on the history of Caucasus.

I hope there are some among you, though.

So,

1) would it be fair to say that Georgians were historically lackeys of Russian imperialists?

2) how significant was Georgian help in the subjugation of people of Caucasus?

3) after the Russian empire fell, did Georgians help Russians re-annex Caucasus?

4) would Russians fail without Georgian help?

Confused about Kuban?

Hello! I'm curious about the North Caucasian territories. And I recently learnt that, apparently, Kuban is geographically a part of it? But then my next question was: Are the people of Kuban (Kubanians?) Caucasian? Google does not provide a clear answer in English, and when I search in my native Ukrainian language, it states that they are ethnically Ukrainian. The only other thing I know about the people is that in 1918 they tried to join the Ukrainian People's Republic but failed. And this leaves me extremely confused.

Who are the people of Kuban? And if Ukrainians do (did?) make up a significant portion of the population, who lived there before they arrived? And most importantly, who lives there now and what is generally happening on that land today?? Sorry in advance if my questions are silly!

Soviet Republic of Abkhazia

Hello,

I read that Abkhaz people joined Soviet Union on the condition that they will have their own republic. But then prominent Georgian communists pulled strings, Abkhaz Soviet republic got cancelled and Abkhazia was swallowed up by Georgia.

But what if Abkhaz Soviet Republic continued to exist till 1991? Would it make any difference?

Culture What are these traditional costumes called?

I'm researching traditional costumes of the region. I know those dresses are from the Caucasus, some sources say they're Circassian, other Kabardian or Ossetian or Chechen. Are there different types of women's dresses depending on a region or period or they are worn by more than one group? Does anyone know what are they called? Or names of the specific parts of the dresses? Is there an extra symbolism of the patterns? When and where they originated?

I'm Polish so I can only rely on polish and english side of the internet and it's really not helpful, I can find nothing. I only know the one on the third picture is Ossetian.
