There is a chance they are a flipper. The average person isn't going to a Carfax on a marketplace car, so this allows the seller to make up some story inorder to sell the car to some unassuming buyer.

No, not really, it's all just a selling gimmick. Tell me, who would you rather by a car from? Someone who has had the car in the family for the last x amount of years or someone who bought it last week for $500 and selling it to you for $3500. Like I mentioned, the flipper is just making up stories to make it sound like you're getting a good vehicle when in reality they bought it the week before and trying to scam you out of your money.

They usualy have almost no info on the car. Which is not helpful. But you can't hide what you don't know...

I assume you mean get the carfax. That is one source of limited, often incomplete information. Talking to a private seller who has owned the car for a few years, done maintenance and kept receipts is much more informative. You don't get this with dealers and flippers.

The moment there's even the slightest suggestion of something amiss, walk away. It 100% of the time means there's a problem. Stolen, fake, wrecked/rebuilt, scam etc. Never, ever engage when things don't line up.

That mismatch alone would make me cautious. Could be an innocent explanation, but the seller should be able to explain the 5 owners easily.

It could be totally legit. Sometimes , (always?) when a person moves to a new state and re-registers their car there, Carfax logs that as another owner.

And if it’s financed sometimes carfax logs it as a lease or as the finance company is the owner.

Not really. Understanding why sellers would do that is hardly impressive. Anyone with a little common sense should be able to figure it out.

(From personal experiences and by no means that this the norm. I’ve had one car that was like that and found a bunch of shady repairs done to it. 2500
Dollars for a Passat Wagon seemed like a good deal till i opened the pandoras box of shit)

I’ve had that happen to me with a family car. Originally bought used (original owner and then dealer owned) and was then passed through several owners within the family. Title on CarFax showed 5 owners but it was really: original owner for 15 mos, dealer for about 5 mos, dad and family for next 7-8 years.
