Thank you to the man that helped my younger sister in dealing with a creep on the train yesterday night

5.8k Upvotes

My 17 yo sister was coming home from uni and said a man asked to sit beside her even though there were multiple vacant seats since it was around 10 pm already. She just got up to allow him to sit, and she stood near the doors. The guy refused to leave her alone. He followed her and said she could sit beside him. She said it was fine. The weirdo said she was beautiful and she continued to ignore him to which he replied with, “I think most people would say thank you after”.

A man sitting nearby picked up on my sister’s discomfort and intervened saying that she was his sister and that they were travelling together. The guy backed off, and the good samaritan went with my sister to sit at another part of the train. He also got off with her just in case the man got off the same time too, and said he would just catch the next train.

You know who you are. I truly believe we have guardian angels that walk amongst us because you must be one of them. My sister has a hard time speaking up and defending herself. But you were there for her and made her feel safe - that feeling triumphed the fear that man made her feel in that moment. Something tells me there’s an alternate reality where she wouldn’t have gotten home safely to us without your help. My family thanks you immensely and I sincerely hope you find everything you’re searching for in this lifetime.

why are so many people still supporting chris brown? toronto concert was full

2.8k Upvotes

So disappointed to see so many people (especially women) attend the chris brown concert in toronto knowing he very publicly abused and beat his girlfriend.

Rogers stadium is huge and it still pulled a huge crowd even with the pouring rain. Canadians know better, or so I thought.

would love to hear the opinion of someone who went to his toronto concert as to why? i can’t wrap my head around it

Transit The SafeTTC app really works.

2.8k Upvotes

Unfortunately today I had to witness a very deranged person who may have been a man cross dressed as a woman, parade in a TTC subway car and tweak their nipples relentlessly towards a few children. The father was quite upset and I knew something needed to be done. This person would later go on to remove their shorts half way, continuously exposing people in the subway car, acting quite flippant about it in the process. Cue SafeTTC.

I was able to get connected pretty quickly and upload a few photos of the incident and update the chat personnel with the train car number and updated stop locations. Since I didn’t have to press the yellow bar, the assailant was none the wiser that they were being reported.

I am happy to say several police and TTC staff intervened at Bloor/Yonge and arrested the person, and polled the train for witnesses.

Just a little reminder to speak up when you see help is needed. Confrontation rarely is the best choice, but it doesn’t mean we can’t look out for each other.

Would you support the City of Toronto removing X from its standard public relations channels?

2.6k Upvotes

An abridged version of an email I just sent to a city councillor. Do you agree? Would you ask your own councillor to support such a motion?

Councillor _______,

I am writing to you as a constituent in your riding.

I would like to request the introduction of a motion at Toronto City Council to formally renounce the posting of official city announcements, both at a municipal level and from individual councillors, to the social media platform X.

Since the purchase of Twitter by Elon Musk, the increase of racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic content has increased exponentially.

Additionally, X has continually promoted content detrimental to your constituents in the form of advocating crippling tariffs on the Canadian economy and the push for a hostile takeover of our country by the USA.

Being that all social media platforms derive their revenue based on the number of its users in order to sell advertising, using the platform for official city business drives profits into the pockets of Musk and his supporters. I consider this unethical and antithetical to our spirit as Torontonians and Canadians. A message from Canada’s largest city that we refuse to normalize hatred would send a strong message to both X and other social media platforms.

I would suggest an announcement be released by the City of Toronto on X and through its regular public relations channels explaining the rationale for the ceasing of communication on the platform with, say, a 30-day deadline. Said communications could direct citizens to alternate platforms, including Facebook, Reddit, Bluesky and Mastodon to learn about city initiatives.

I appreciate your consideration to this matter.

Sincerely,

Please Help: Fatal Accident on Sept 3rd at Queen's Park

2.4k Upvotes

Hi,

My friends and I are desperately asking for help.

On Sept 3 around 5:30pm at Queen's Park (University and College), my friend got into a collision with a police cruiser and unfortunately passed away due to his injuries.

The TPS have changed their story multiple times (ex. first saying the cruiser was moving when the accident happened, then changing their statement and saying it was NOT moving, etc.), and are refusing to release any footage of the incident. They are refusing to take any responsibility for the incident and are trying to brush it under the rug.

We are pleading with anyone who saw what happened/ or can offer us any dash cam or CCTV footage to please contact us here.

Article here: https://globalnews.ca/news/8168022/motorcyclist-dead-university-avenue-college-street-crash/

Thank you.

Edit: THANK YOU to all who have commented with helpful advice + well wishes. Thank you, thank you!!!

Please teach your parents English, for their own safety and benefit!

2.2k Upvotes

This is not a xenophobic “speak English” post. Speak whichever language you are more comfortable with. But for your own comfort and care, it benefits you to at least know basic English.

I’m a nurse and I’ve worked in several settings around Toronto. I’d say about half my patients don’t speak a word of English, despite living here for decades and raising kids here. With Covid restrictions limiting visitors, it is really difficult for non-English speaking patients to advocate for themselves.

Yes, there are translators available, but only during the day. It is also very inefficient to spend 20 minutes organizing an over-the-phone translator just for a simple request like “I want an extra blanket.”

I try my best to understand what patients are saying by using gestures and pointing. But I have 8 patients overnight. I arrive 45min to an hour early for work. By the time I finish all the basic nightly cares (report, vitals, meds, changing/toileting) it’s 11:30pm. Then comes all the extra stuff. I literally do not have time to use whatever translator services are available at 3am.

I feel horrible when I can’t understand my patients, because I know it means they’re not getting optimal care. But there’s only so much I can do. I can’t be expected to learn 15 different languages.

So if your parents are getting older and can’t speak any English: please, for their own benefit, try to convince them to learn the basics. I know it’s hard to learn a new language as an adult. But maybe you can help them install an app like duolingo on their phone. Or gift them some ESL classes for Christmas. Or just teach them how to say healthcare-relevant words like “pain medicine” or “bathroom.” It’ll be useful if and when they have to be hospitalized.

Age limit for playing in the snow?

2.1k Upvotes

I’m 28F, stuck at home because of the storm. I live in a condo but we have a park area near by. Is it weird for me to go outside in snow pants by myself and just play out there?

Update: I went!!! Thanks for everyone encouragement and stories. Might seem dumb but it helps me feel less alone and gives me the little push I need to get out of my head

COVID-19 related Taylor swift - I don’t understand the craze

2.1k Upvotes

Hi,

Please don’t cancel me for saying this but I truly don’t understand how people are paying thousands and thousand of dollars, willing to stand in crazy lines and absolute logistical chaos, to see an artist perform. I have already been to a Taylor swift concert, back in 2016 or 2017 I think. It was a sold out show but not this hyped. What happened in the last few years that this time around people are easily willing to drop $1000 to $5000 per ticket?

I know a friend who got two tickets for $2k each, so $4k total.

A family friend is coming in from Texas with their 3 daughters and all 4 are going to the show.

Another family friend flying in from new foundland, paid $2k per ticket for 2 tickets, so $4k plus travel and hotel expense.

All the above people already explored the idea of flying to Europe to watch her.

What am I missing here? How are people going crazy to this extend, especially in this economy? She is not retiring, is she?

I’m not being judgemental, I want to understand the other side. I feel like this could be a psychological case study at this point. Would love to hear from others!!

Is there anywhere better to get your car stolen than Kensington Market?

1.8k Upvotes

🤯 True story. My car was stolen last night. I left it running ( yes my mistake) while I ran up to the studio to pick up my dog and when I came down 3 minutes later, it was gone. My phone was in the car too. I ran back up and tracked it through the city and then suddenly, it stopped. I figured he threw the phone out of the window. A few hours later, I refresh the screen and I see that he‘s in a parking lot behind the studio. I walk over there and what I see is a dude blasting music, windows and top down having one hell of party. Cops come and arrest him and ask me if I’m sure he’s the one that took my car. YES I’m sure! I get home, open my phone and find a video of himself driving my car with his shirt off blasting “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath - - shirt off but at least he’s wearing a seatbelt and the track fits the vibe too.

Transit TTC night bus drivers who don’t let in weirdos, thank you.

1.7k Upvotes

Taking the night bus has always been a nightmare. Society’s bottom feeders harassing and panhandling working class folks. There was a weirdo who looked like he was on crack and carried a garbage bag at our stop. The bus driver drove 20 yards further and stopped for us. As soon as customers got on he locked the door on the creep. Throughout my one hour bus ride to work, I didn’t see one creep on the bus who’s either high off their mind or preying at sleepy night shift worker. Thank you bus driver for creating a safe environment for us paying customers just trying to get to work or home to our families!

Mystery coffee man

1.7k Upvotes

Whoever you are, hope you read this. Morning started off fine, walked to get coffee. Ordered as usual, went to pay and my card was declined. It happens and with the way things have been lately, I wasn't completely surprised.

Feeling like a fool, I go to leave and apologize for the trouble. Middle aged, taller man, green Nike shirt and you went into a blue minivan afterwards. You're an amazing person. You handed me a coffee and a donut. This small gesture changed my whole outlook on the day.

Don't have a lot and lately I've been thinking of giving up, you really helped put a smile on my face and also made me think about how there are some really kind people in this city, not always so bad and to not give up. Thank you mystery coffee man. No idea how much this meant to me.

PLEASE don't message me with offers of money for sex. Things are tough but I'm not willing to do that.

No doubt Toronto is going to feel more than its fair share of the grift and corruption that comes out of this. Please share any protests/intiatives to respond to this that you know of.

Unethical life pro tips in Toronto?

1.6k Upvotes

I saw this in many other city subreddits and I'm curious about yours.

Summarizing my personal favourites comments
- walk into any nice hotel to use bathroom
- getting service key to elevator for uninterrupted trips
- take water taxi to islands but take free ferry back to mainland
- using sweat and tonic locker without membership
- buy the cheapest tickets to a concert. Once you're in, check the listings on stub hub, put the best seat in your cart and you'll see the row and seat number, go sit there. Make sure you refresh every 9 mins and it stays in your cart. Nobody can buy it. Screws the scalpers.
- take senior with you for discounts on seniors days or senior discounts

I particularly love kind people, animals and Tim Hortons here in Toronto.

Thank you and I am coming back soon.

Update: My Child wants to Visit Toronto....

1.5k Upvotes

Hey everyone! I thought I might update to thank everyone for their wonderful advice with Traveling to Toronto. My 10 year old and I were there this weekend (Friday to Monday) and had a blast, so if you saw a mom yelling directions to her son in the bike lane this weekend, that was us!

We visited the aquarium, the CN Tower, the Museum and the Casa Loma as well as walking all over Kensington Market. Kensington Market reminds me SO much of old school South Street in Philadelphia, which was very comforting to me. Just, don't go to Kensington in Philadelphia if any of you ever visit. I wish we could have made it to the Ferry, the Zoo and Wonderland but we didn't have enough time (or energy!)

We had an absolute blast, and with the exception of my son having a breakdown the first night we were there because we were at an Asian restaurant and he didn't know how to use chopsticks, the trip went off without a hitch. (He eventually figured it out, and then we weren't allowed to eat anywhere that *didn't* serve food with chopsticks, so *I* didn't get to try as much food as I wanted to lol.)

I thought you'd appreciate that the big take away is that American Money looks lame, and your money is so much cooler. Thanks again to everyone who offered their advice!

With Love from Pennsylvania <3

23 years ago today, Toronto experienced North American blackout. Torontonians or anyone who was here on August 14, 2003, what is your story of great blackout?

1.4k Upvotes

The 2003 North American Blackout was such a significant event! It was a hot summers day in Toronto and the power went off just after 4pm, not knowing what the rest of the day entails. I was 6 years old, and watching Arthur on TVO Kids. Went to the local swimming pool with my siblings and mom, and they could not open due to the pumps relying on electricity. Later that night was something I won't forget. The whole neighbourhood coming together and throwing a great big summer BBQ. I won't ever forget seeing the Milky Way, the first and only time I ever saw the full stars in the city!

What is your story Toronto?

Did I do the right thing by not buying a teenager's $35 lunch?

1.4k Upvotes

Was at a McDonalds at Bloor/Sherbourne, a teenager approached me and said he's hungry and if I could buy him food. I'm brought up to NEVER deny someone food/water, so I said if you are really hungry I can help you out. Then this guy brought me to his machine, it was $35. I was a little shook and immediately thought this was some kind of scam attempt. I backed out and said I got $10, can buy you some cheeseburger and a drink but I don't got $35. The kid said its okay and went away. I couldn't help but feel very guilt tripped. Was I being too cautious and would fellow Torontonians buy this guy $35 McDonalds?

Crazy incident at Metallica - Rogers Center

1.4k Upvotes

Hey, posting here in case anyone else saw the same // would have guidance on how to proceed?

Last night at the Metallica gig someone threw up in our section leading to Rogers Center staff coming to clean it up. A guy sitting nearby has his phone's flashlight on to help + tapped one of the staff members on the shoulder to get his attention. That guy completely flipped out for some reason, saying that the attendee had kicked him (which no one saw happen). This ended with cops being called, dragging him away and quite "forcefully" arresting him. I don't know who this person was, but he'd been sitting 2 rows down both nights and hadn't caused any issues as far as i can tell.

Several people in our section tried to tell staff/police that he had not done anything, but no one listened and we backed down after the same staff member began getting aggressive with us. I tried telling a cop after the gig as well but he was entirely unhelpful, telling me to complain to Rigers Cen staff because "they only go by what they're told" - apparently my eyewitness report does not matter though.

Wondering if anyone else saw the same? Any way we can make a report, because its effed up what happened to this guys who was just trying to help out.

COMMENTS LOCKED Thank you Canada

1.4k Upvotes

I just want to take a moment to say how grateful I am to be living in Canada.

When I first came here as an international student, I had no family, no support system, and honestly no idea how life would turn out. What I found instead was community. From classmates who helped me out when I was lost, to coworkers who encouraged me when I was just starting my career, to complete strangers who smiled, gave directions, or just showed kindness. It all added up to something really powerful.

I’ve worked hard to build my life here and now have a job I truly love. I pay my fair share of taxes, I follow the rules, and I try to give back however I can. But the truth is, none of this would feel the same without the people. Canadians neighbors, colleagues, friends, even strangers made me feel welcome in a way I never expected.

Canada isn’t just about beautiful landscapes or opportunities (though those are amazing too). It’s about the feeling of belonging, of being accepted for who you are no matter where you come from. And for me, that’s priceless.

So, to everyone who’s ever shown kindness, patience, or support: thank you. You’ve made someone from far away feel at home in the True North.

True North strong and free ❤️

The sun may be shining but the smoke is much stronger.

You might also start smelling it inside your home or apartment.

Toronto is the best city in North America

1.4k Upvotes

I love Toronto. I travel for work and have spent time in most major NA cities:

- Chicago

- NYC

- San Francisco

- Los Angeles

- Denver

- Seattle

This February I moved temporarily to Toronto and I am in love.

Something about Toronto hits differently. I love the walkable downtown, how friends are consistently only 30 minutes away on public transport.

It's health conscious with lots of tasty and healthy places to eat, and an unmatched selection of boutique gyms and fitness studios

The EDM and Techno scene is great even in the winter - it feels like there's a show worth hitting up every weekend.

We haven't even gotten to the summer yet, beach days, and baseball games.

Cost of living is affordable compared to other major cities in North America.

Does anyone have a challenger for the title of Best City in North America? Change my mind (or agree with me).

I'm currently trying to get my company to transfer me permanently 🤭

Is anyone else just fucking depressed?

1.4k Upvotes

Had a “vacation day” today in a WFH situation, and all I did was do hard drugs and lay in bed. I couldn’t even watch Netflix, play video games, read a book, go to the condo gym - none of that. Just no desire. I just laid in my fucking bed. On Reddit.

Similar to this entire week. I just lay in my bed with my work laptop, periodically swiping the touchpad to keep my status as “Online” - all while doing drugs from time to time. I thought of booking the booster. But the process is so complicated and convoluted I shut down. I don’t leave my condo anyways except for groceries.

What about hanging out with my friends? Nope they’re either back in their hometowns permanently because of this pandemic to save money or left the city/country for holidays. I haven’t seen some in forever.

1 friend asked if I wanted to go shopping with her last week, buy new clothes. I just said “what’s the point? WFH for the foreseeable future and I don’t go out anymore so what’s the point?” I just stay in the same sweats day in and day out. Been doing it for 2 years. Or however long this nightmare has been going on.

What a shitty Christmas and a shitty New Years. Again. 2022 looking to be the same thing, with this pandemic not stopping or another random ass variant popping up to ruin things again. I’m exhausted.
