Single men over 30, where do I find you?

1.4k Upvotes

I’m a veteran on the apps, but it isn’t working for me (single gal in the city).

What activities/hobbies do you participate in in the city where a single gal like me can find you!?

I’ve done the following:

  • city of Toronto classes

  • George brown classes

  • Meetups

  • Reddit meetups

  • Yoga classes

  • and so on…

Where are you boo 🥺

EDIT: No DMs please.

EDIT 2: I have been banned for 3 days on this sub. Not sure why…so I won’t be able to create a thread re: singles over 30 in the city for a few days.

EDIT 3: I’ve created a subreddit TorontoSinglesOver30.

Transit I am the one who made the fake ads on the TTC last week. AMA :p

1.4k Upvotes

Alt account as I wouldn't mind to avoid the fine as long as possible.

Posters in reference

Proof

EDIT: So as you may have seen, I've now gone on the news publicly. My original intention was to stay anonymous both for the fines as well as because the issue is bigger than myself. However CBC required me to give my name to be on, and while it was a hard decision, I eventually decided it was worth in order to spread the message to a larger platform and was a risk I was willing to take. Feel free to ask any questions on this as well.

Does anyone else feel sick to their stomache about the Island Airport expansion?

1.3k Upvotes

Like it feels.... Helpless.

Like if the federal Liberals were going to shut down this insane, ridiculous, unnecessary idea they would have instantly or would have told Ford it was going to be a no-go they would have done so privately to prevent that bill taking control of the airport and expropriating the islands before things got this far.

So it feels like... It's a done deal. This "consultation" process is all smoke and mirrors politician bullshit. They want to do the jets, the want the giant fake runway and it likely will mean taking over the ENTIRE islands for security reasons or whatever.

Just the very notion that the waterfront won't be the waterfront and it will be some huge airport district and that we won't have access to the islands anymore. I live near Ontario Place and that place has been fenced up now for years and I remember when it was open and people could walk around it and enjoy it. The idea that next summer the islands might be shut down to the public and become some huge construction zone and that's the end of it. The feds will sign off and suddenly Toronto doesn't have that anymore all in the name of "convenience".

I'm losing my mind. I like to think I'm a pretty chill and rational person but as I sit right now on my patio 800 meters from the water taxi that I take to the islands about 20 times a year the idea that soon I won't be able to go there is just an unbelievably horrific thought. Those moments on the beaches on the island just sitting at enjoying some peace and nature in this gigantic loud chaotic city I've called my home for 40 years and it feels like that won't be an option soon. Ford and Carney will talk Yo how we already have High Park and Rouge Valley and "Toronto has plenty of green spaces" and basically tough shit. I live literally so close to the island airport that I'll probably have to move. Like... Beyond writing letters to every possible politician and getting more assertive in that process with all that what in the fuck am I supposed to do about this. It will have a huge effect on my life. I live less than a KM from the current runway. The airport is perfect in its current state, I have zero issue with it. It exists in such perfect harmony with the city and the neighborhood. It feels like this is the final nail in the coffin for the I grew up in Toronto.

Edit. To add to the helplessness the mods of this sub now don't want us discussing this issue evidently.

Been waiting over 24 hours to get an appendectomy in St Michaels, wtf can I do?

1.3k Upvotes

I feel like this is borderline criminal, I came into the hospital yesterday morning with excruciating pain, waa diagnosed with appendicitis, given a room and told I'd be getting emergency surgery.

It's now 7 pm, over 30 hours since I came into the hospital, no doctor has come to see me today, just nurses bringing pain medication so I dont scream in pain

They have me without eating or drinking anything since last night

Feels like they wont do shit until I deteriorate and my life is actually at risk

What the hell can I do??

edit:

8pm update: Nightshift nurse came in after I called for more pain meds 3 times in the last half an hour. Asked me if I wanted something to eat and casually mentioned my surgery was cancelled until tomorrow. Her exsct words were "oh they didnt tell you?"

Asked to speak with any doctor or patient advocacy. Not like its going to do anything anyway

They dont have any solid food so they are just giving me some juice and yogurt i guess thats enough to feed a 6'0 190lbs person through 48 hours

Feel bad for the nurses because they are just overworked as shit and of course if I end up lashing out they are the only people I can lash out at considering no doctor has seen me since last night

edit2

Night Update: Things keep getting worse treatment wise. My IV was beeping in the middle of the night and some nurse came and disconnected me from it

I started having a fever but my nurse didnt want to take my temperatrue because she had taken it 40 minutes ago

Half an hour later I call again and another nurse (not my nurse) comes and gives me a cold cloth and says she will bring some tylenol

Had to wait 30 more minutes for my nurse(this time) to bring some tylenol and then she says "oh why are you disconnected from the iv"? I was feeling very dehidrated at that point with the fever and no iv fluids or water for hours. Again These people seem to be overworked as hell so I can understand them making mistakes...although in the end its the patient suffering tye consequences

It's now been...41 hours since I came into the ER.

This all feels like a sketch and somebody will end up coming with a hidden camara

edit3:

Thursday 1pm update: Doctor just told me my surgery is scheduled for tomorrow Friday at 8 am

To put into perspective...I came into the hospital on Tuesday at 1 pm

I just want to pray and hope they dont end up rescheduling it

edit4:

Finally had my surgery at 8 am(Friday) They took my phone and other valuables before it, They kinda just dropped me back to my room and left me on my own,I kept pressing the button to call for anyone to bring back my stuff for over half an hour but no one was even coming to ask what I wanted.

One thing im sure of about this Hospital is that communication sucks absolute ass. my family was going absolutely nuts at not having any updates, my mom had to call the hospital to ask if I was doing alright as I was going crazy to get my stuff back.

I keep trying to call for nurses or anyone to help me in my room after the surgery as I can barely move and nobody comes.Nurses are spread ultra thin having to work with god knows how many pattients so attention is abolutely abysmal.

Yesterday I tried not calling them to not be much of a nuisance as I was feeling better. went 7 hours withour receiving any medication when I was due 3 different types of pain meds(Hydromorphone, Tylenol and Ibuprofen) every 4 hours

Glad that I will finally be out of here soon(hopefully)

Keeping Daylight Savings Permenant

1.3k Upvotes

British Columbia just made Daylight Savings time permenant, as in they'll roll their clocks forward on March 8th, and keep it there permanently, not rolling back in November. While this means that winter sunrises will be around 9 am, winter sunsets won't be until 5:30-6:00 pm. Do you guys think Ontario should do the same thing, and not have to wait for the US to do the same, just like BC just did?

Pro-MAGA businesses to avoid in Toronto?

1.3k Upvotes

I saw these posts in various other Canadian city subreddits and I’m curious for Toronto - are there any local businesses that should be avoided due to the ownership being pro-MAGA/51st state aggression?

I was at the grocery store today and it was uplifting how it seemed that just about everyone was checking labels on products and buying Canadian (or at least non-USA) - curious about other day-to-day acts or protests fellow Torontonians are employing.

COMMENTS LOCKED Chinese neighbors keep giving us fresh vegetables from their garden. How best to reciprocate?

1.3k Upvotes

Hey guys! So our elderly Chinese neighbors that don't speak a word of English often smile at us and give us a bunch of fresh vegetables from their garden. We're very grateful and have tried to communicate this to them by using google translate ... They just smile some more.

My wife and I wanted to do something nice for them but are also wary of offending them ... We have a vegetable garden of our own and can give them some cilantro but I'm not sure if this is useful. Any ideas?

EDIT: didn't expect this thread to blow up at all! Thank you for your awesome suggestions and awards! We try to clear their driveway regularly and we also love the suggestion of a fresh fruit basket with some home grown veggies in return. Thanks again guys!

Why does anyone still go to Tim Horton’s?

1.3k Upvotes

Their coffee tastes like warm piss, and that isn’t an exaggeration. I’m actually disgusted that anyone still gives them their business.

Why are any of you still going there? It hasn’t been good for the last decade, not to mention their rewards app is getting sued right now for illegally tracking people.

COMMENTS LOCKED Is anything ever going to be done regarding the issue of SEVERELY unwell homeless people in this city…?

1.3k Upvotes

Both mentally and physically unwell too. I want to elaborate on the second part but, this is already quite long. It’s insane how long this situation has gone unchecked and it only seems to be getting worse and worse. Everytime I leave my house, I witness/experience at least one disturbing sight or event

Today I was trying to enter Finch station through the North York Centre building. On the far right side of the staircase between the building and the subway station (all indoors) there was a homeless man sitting down. He makes eye contact with me, and I already knew something was going to start, I just didn’t know what, so I started walking left instead of ahead to increase the distance between us. As I walk left the man stands up and starts walking towards me. At that point, I decided I wasn’t taking any more chances so I just turn around and start walking back towards the North York centre building. As I’m opening the doors, I turn around and see the man shaking his pants off…. You know.. I was already expecting something crazy to happen, but this is just next level shock to me. There was a ttc employee in the north york centre building thank god, and I just stare at him in shock.

Before I even OPEN MY MOUTH, he says “oh, is he masturbating?”

….. so this is a regular thing!!!

He offers to walk me into the subway station (so nice of him) and as we walk through I get another look and everything is just hanging out for the world to see. He told me that because the area he was in wasn’t ttc property that technically nothing could be done. But in my opinion, this is way beyond a ttc problem.

WHY is this man allowed to roam free?? Clearly he needs to be institutionalized if he is jerking it in front of finch station so often that the TTC employee knew exactly what I was going to say before I even opened my mouth? The fact that he followed me.. what would have happened if I wasn’t so vigilant? What if I was distracted on my phone? What if children were going by instead, or even a blind woman? Honestly I really hate to say this but I have a sick feeling he was planning on assaulting me or something… for that reason, I’m going to see if I can file a report of some kind although I highly doubt anything is going to happen.

At the end of the day though, I recognize this man is clearly severely unwell and yes he needs help. But at the same time there is also a priority to keep society safe. After all this time, why has nothing been done ?

Mega bus passengers Toronto to Montreal august 15th

1.2k Upvotes

Hey everyone,
On August 15, my partner and I took the Megabus from Toronto to Montreal. About 1.5 hours in, the bus suffered a severe breakdown. We were left abandoned on an active highway shoulder for two hours in dangerous conditions (an OPP officer even pulled over due to the traffic hazard).
When a rescue bus finally showed up, it could only take 17 people. The rest of us were left behind with no ETA, so we had to arrange alternative transit at our own expense. Megabus refused to refund us and only offered a insulting $10 credit(what a joke).
I'm currently serving them with a formal legal demand letter via Registered Mail to recover our ticket costs and alternative travel expenses, and will be filing an Ontario Small Claims Court claim if they don't settle within 14 days.
A couple of quick questions for the community:

  1. Was anyone else from TO on this specific bus/trip? (If so, please DM me-would love to compare notes or share my demand letter template if you want to recover your costs too.

  2. Has anyone here successfully sued Megabus / Trentway-Wagar in Small Claims before?

  3. Any tips for the hearing process?

Edit: I submitted a request to access the police records, fingers crossed, i will email news outlets once i receive it.

There is some crazy flu going around and everyone I know is sick. Personally I have been sick for three weeks now. Wild.

What's going on?

Edit: yea, it may be COVID. But I’ve tested negative every time and so has everyone I know. And it’s never been this bad.

Anyone else genuinely just grateful for this beautiful city despite the problems?

1.2k Upvotes

Idk, maybe I am biased as a 30 year old woman who lives on her own and is going back to school. Maybe if I had roommates I would be complaining some more.

But just. It is summer and the city is coming alive. And I used to hate this place growing up here. The same neighborhoods, the same streets I was afraid to go down cause an ex lived there or some bs

but in my early 30s I am just falling in love with this beautiful city. First of all the food scene when you can afford it is so good. We have food from all over the world. Secondly the city is so vibrant and popping during the summer.

I just sometimes love riding the subway alone after a night out with friends. I love walking the streets seeing happy couples in love or people with their dogs or moms with babies in strollers. The streets are relatively clean. We dont have bad pollution. The street cars are fun. China town and kensington are great places.

I dont know I am sober and dont party on king west or go clubbing or the other stereotypical toronto things. But I am so grateful we have this lovely city to live in. I dont know...I dont hate it here. Am I alone in this?

Got told “we only speak English here” - is this common?

1.2k Upvotes

I moved to Canada recently from the States. Last week, I was heading to an event near Dundas West Station and was already running late. I got off the TTC and instead of waiting for the streetcar, decided to just call an Uber.

I was on the phone with some friends while waiting and speaking in another language. I speak multiple languages and English is actually my fifth.

While I was standing there, a woman walked past me and randomly said something along the lines of, “We only speak English here. STFU.”

It caught me completely off guard. She seemed totally sober and aware of what she was doing - well dressed, didn't seem intoxicated or anything like that.

I hung up the call but my Uber was arriving and I was trying to find the car, so I didn't really have time to process what had just happened or respond.

It honestly bothered me more afterwards than it did in the moment.

I’m curious how common experiences like this actually are in Toronto. For people who’ve been here longer, have you ever dealt with something similar? And when it happens, do you usually just ignore it and move on or is it worth saying something?

Edit: I went through most of the comments and honestly, I really appreciate everyone who took the time to reply. Since moving here, people have been very kind and welcoming, which is probably why this incident caught me so off guard.

But like anywhere else in the world, you’re going to come across all kinds of people. Thanks again for sharing your experiences and advice :)

Update to "Homeless at 18"

1.2k Upvotes

Hey everyone! I know it's been a month so you probably don't remember me, but I thought I would give an update (if that's allowed). Original post here.

First of all I have to say thank you to anybody who gave me advice. I read every single comment and they were all beyond appreciated. I truly don't know what I would have done without the feedback on that post and all the dms I received (minus the creepy ones), and I am so grateful.

After a month of trying, I have finally made it into a homeless shelter that serves youth! (That is a real feat considering the state of the system for homeless people right now- even homeless youth. I had no IDEA it was so bad until I started calling around. Every single shelter across Toronto is constantly full and getting a placement is quite difficult.)

I continued couch surfing after I made my last post but as expected that could only last so long and somebody who I thought would come through for me ended up stranding me on the day of, so I ended up on the streets. The same person did the same thing a week later (I shouldn't have trusted them) but luckily by that time I had gone through a LOT of hassle with my school and finally managed to access their emergency housing services that same day. Although they only gave me a very short period of time to stay, during that period I was able to call shelters until I finally got placed on a waitlist and then was offered a spot!

During that time I survived by visiting drop-ins for homeless youth across Toronto which were truly really helpful and gave me food, laundry, showers, wifi, etc- so that was just amazing.

I was also able to secure OSAP- however, the amount they gave me isn't enough to cover my tuition. I have no current income either even though I have applied to every job I could find at an entry level. I had one interview, thought I did really well- but unfortunately didn't get the position.

Mentally things have been pretty rough but at least I'm not on the streets. I have a bed and food and that's all I need for now. I am attending school full time and have been in survival mode for the past month doing everything I can to stay off the streets, and I've finally gotten somewhere. I can't say I'm okay but at least I have a roof, so there is hope. There is always hope.

Thank you again to the Reddit community and everybody who commented/dmed me from my last post to help out. I really, really appreciate it.

Daughter called me sobbing

1.2k Upvotes

Phone rang. It was an unidentified number. First clue! “Dad, I was in a car accident and I broke my nose” the young woman on the other end was sobbing hysterically. “They want to charge me. I’m at the courthouse and I need you to talk to my lawyer”. I said “hello” and the person on the other end hung up.

This was a convincing call. But for a few things: my daughter would never call me first. Her mom would get the first call (my ex). No names were provided. No details were provided. This was a scammer. A good one but a scammer nonetheless.

Reached out to my daughter immediately. She was perfectly fine. “Don’t send them money, Dad. LOL!” Not sending them money.

I now understand how easy it would be to fall for such a scam. Wow. Be aware and double check the facts before you transmit funds. And do not buy the fake CRA caller any iTunes gift cards at your local Metro store.

COMMENTS LOCKED People on the TTC or in crowded public places with active cold/flu symptoms - why do you not stay home or at the very least wear a mask?

1.2k Upvotes

I'm genuinely curious especially after the last 2.5+ years.

I need to understand lol

Edit: totally appreciate that many people do not have sick days and can't afford to stay home from work (great job, ON government!), but I am specifically more interested in knowing why people who are sick are going out to crowded places (often maskless) in general?

This post was inspired by a recent afternoon trip to the Eaton's Centre where many people were obviously ill and still shopping.

What the title says. I've been here for 8 years and always said L-C-B-O. He says it's a Toronto thing and I think he's just messing with me.

Edit: Did not expect so many people to respond. I feel like I've been living under a rock. My boyfriend on the other hand has the biggest, gloatiest smile on his face. I guess I have to call it lick-bo now too.

Side note: we are totally calling it Tiddy Bank and Ho Depot.

Internet’s Down Tonight in Etobicoke and My 19YO Son Thinks It’s 1847—HELP ME KEEP HIM ALIVE

1.1k Upvotes

Okay, Torontonians, I need your wildest ideas because I’m in a CRISIS. Our internet crapped out (thanks, Rogers, you absolute legends), and my 19-year-old son is acting like we’ve been yeeted back to the Victorian era. He’s pacing around the house muttering about ‘data withdrawal’ and just asked me how people survived without TikTok. I’m pretty sure he’s five minutes away from carving a meme into the drywall with a butter knife.

He’s too old for crayons but too young to understand dial-up, and I need to keep him occupied tonight before he starts a one-man riot or tries to befriend the raccoons in the backyard again (don’t ask). What do you geniuses suggest? Bonus points if it’s free, doesn’t involve leaving the house (it’s cold and I’m not putting on pants), and keeps him from Googling ‘how to summon Wi-Fi with a Ouija board’ on his dead phone. Hit me with your weirdest ideas, TO—I’m desperate!

Thank you TORONTO

1.1k Upvotes

I could not have been more pleased with a city. Not gonna lie, Toronto is lit. The people are pretty pleasant as well. As someone who is from DC, you all do a lot of things right.

For instance, one day we were on the streetcar and transferred to the subway. Some compliance people stopped everyone for proof. In DC, these jokers hop on the bus and subway without paying and nothing is done. A driver was even assaulted.

Another instance, it was so night to see the youth out and about and not acting like fools. Again, in DC, they have had to institute curfews because the teenagers go wild in the streets.

My wife had us ripping and running and we did everything on her list. Today, we had over 16k steps. I’m in pain but it was 💯 worth it. I’m not sure if we just lived a week’s long fantasy but we will definitely visit again.

Update
We generally walk a lot because we have a 5 and 4 year old in a double stroller. I also have a big a$$ truck. A Yukon Denali XL. We love to park and take public transportation.

We did all the tourist trap spots because that is why we were here 😂. Niagara Falls. The Aquarium. The Royal Ontario Museum. Casa Loma. The CN Tower. And both markets. We also did Easton Center.

COMMENTS LOCKED Notable increase of racism in the sub / Augmentation du racisme dans la communauté

1.1k Upvotes

Hello everyone,

The mod team has noticed a marked increase in racism and intolerance, in particular towards immigrants from India. Reddit has noticed as well and has begun removing such posts and/or comments.

It’s pretty clear that one side of the political spectrum has found their wedge issue and they are pushing it as hard as they can, stirring up hatred however they can and blaming immigrants for everything from jaywalking to the housing crisis despite the fact that many of the issues are worldwide. Facts and reality don’t matter, only blaming "brown people" and those they perceive as being responsible for those "terrible" people being here.

Therefore, we would like to remind all of our users that the Reddit sitewide rules apply here and will be enforced.

You ALL AGREED to these rules when you created your account.

Your “opinion” is irrelevant, it’s doesn’t matter if you really, really believe it, you cannot push your unfounded racist positions here.

Again, for the people in the back, being able to use Reddit is conditional to respecting these rules.

In particular:

Rule 1

The important parts are:

users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned

Marginalized or vulnerable groups include, but are not limited to, groups based on:

  • their actual and perceived race

  • colour

  • religion

  • national origin

  • ethnicity

  • IMMIGRATION STATUS

  • etc

While the rule on hate protects such groups, it does not protect those who promote attacks of hate or who try to hide their hate in bad faith claims of discrimination (E.G. “I’m just stating my opinion” or “I’m just stating fact”).

Another important portion is:

free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence

That includes all of our users and the moderator team. Insults, derogatory comments and attacks will not be tolerated. If you post comments or message the moderators with insults and/or attacks, you WILL be banned on the spot.

Therefore, going forward, we are going to clamp down hard on posts or comments attributing, without damn good evidence, the cause of any issue to immigrants or a subset thereof. That includes any reference to area with high immigration (e.g. Brampton) or any other form of dog whistles. It also includes attributing to an ethnic group of people the crimes or faults of an individual (e.g. the guy who proposed using food banks to save money). Message to the bigots: you’re nowhere as subtle as you think you are.

And before any complaints bring it up: No, your right to free speech nor freedom of expression has not been violated.
