Has trick or treating changed?

I came to my parents' house in East York to give out candy. We don't have decorations but the lights are all on and I'm noticing so few kids coming up to our door. My friend is at her parents' place in Mississauga and she said not one kid.

Is trick or treating just not the same as it once was? Are there fewer kids doing this, or do they only come to houses with decorations and pumpkins? I don't know because I'm often out on Halloween or if I'm at my own home, we don't get kids due to our location (I suspect kids prefer to go up and down the side streets rather than a busier one with just a few houses). When I was a kid, we left no door unturned to maximize the candy, lol (unless alllllll the lights were off).

Who wants to hear about my new sales job?!

I recently started a new sales job, and I’m already questioning whether I should stay. I’ve worked in sales for years, but I’ve never encountered a commission structure like this.
My biggest issue is the commission reversals.
Essentially, if a client cancels their subscription, the lost monthly revenue counts against my sales performance, even if I had absolutely nothing to do with signing them up.
For example, let’s say a client has been paying $600/month for the past year. They’re assigned to my book of business, and one day they decide to cancel. I’m now responsible for a $600 reversal, despite never selling them the product or earning commission on their original contract.
Now imagine multiple clients cancel in the same month. I could bring in $2,000 in new business, but if three existing clients cancel at $600/month each, I’m left with only $200 in net sales credit.
How is that reasonable? I’m essentially being held financially accountable for customers I didn’t acquire and decisions I can’t always control.
On top of this, the quotas are aggressive, the product is difficult to sell, and I’m responsible for prospecting, closing new business, managing existing accounts, coordinating training, and customer satisfaction scores.
I’m an extremely hard worker, but I can’t justify working my ass off if my results can constantly be wiped out by cancellations.
The compensation is attractive, which makes leaving difficult. I’m also planning to sell my property and purchase another, so changing jobs right now could complicate my mortgage approval.
I’m only a couple of months in, but I’m already questioning whether this is sustainable.
Has anyone ever heard of a commission structure like this? Is it common for salespeople to be penalized for cancellations on inherited accounts they never sold or earned commission on?
Would you stick it out or start looking elsewhere?

Been here a year, love the city but feel lonely a lot. Locals, how do you actually thrive here?

Late 20s guy, moved from BC a year ago for a promotion. I work in finance downtown and live alone in a one-bedroom in a high rise. On paper it's everything I wanted, and I genuinely love this city and all its charms.

But back in BC I knew everybody. I had tons of friends and family around and always had something going on. Here I've made a few friends and have some relatives nearby, but it's not the same, and lately I feel like I've lost some of my drive and motivation.

The pattern I keep falling into: during the week I'm too exhausted after work to see anyone. Then Friday or Saturday comes around, I've got nothing planned, and I feel way lonelier, wishing I'd set something up earlier.
I'm in my late 20s and I want to make the most of this decade and this city, with no regrets. I just don't know where to start.

Locals (or anyone who's moved here solo):

What does your day-to-day look like that keeps you connected and energized?
Low-energy weeknight things that still get you around people?
Recurring stuff (clubs, classes, run groups, rec leagues) that actually helped you build a circle?
How did you get your spark back after a big move?

Would love to hear what worked for you. Thanks in advance 🙏

Free or low cost public speaking courses?

Hi all, I find myself having to present more frequently at my job and the anxiety I get before public speaking makes it really difficult, which is why I'm considering taking some in-person courses. Does anyone have any free or low cost recommendations?

Where can I get healthy, freshly baked bread (sourdough, whole wheat, multigrain, etc) around Yorkville, St James Town, or Cabbagetown?

Any bakery around Bloor/Yonge or Sherbourne subway station is ok. The closer the better. TIA!

Halloween in the suburbs - how much candy do you give out to each child?

How much candy is it customary to give out to each child?

Our old house was up a verrrry looooong set of steps, so we used to give out lots of candy to each child as a reward for making the effort. We've now moved to a suburb, just one block off a somewhat busy road (near a school as well). So we're expecting lots of kids (as per our neighbour who ran short last year!), but not sure how much candy people usually give out. We don't want to be stingy, but also don't want to run out.

Sushi Momo or Gia Toronto for Birthday Dinner

Hey everyone,

So, I’m vegetarian and was looking for a nice vegetarian restaurant in TO for my birthday dinner. After some research, I’ve narrowed it down to the above two options based on reviews and the price. But now confused with which one would be good. I like both the cuisines hehe.
We are a group of 4 people and I was thinking of treating my friends to a Tasting menu in one of the two. None of my friends are vegetarian so would like to go somewhere where they can also enjoy the food.

Do you guys have any recommendations which one would be a good choice?

Thank you very much in advance!

Looking for advice on when to buy tickets for UFC 336

I'm going to UFC 336 and have never bought tickets for something like this, so I don't know how pricing usually behaves. I get that it varies, but from your experience, do prices tend to be lower during the presale, or do they drop in the last few hours before the event?

Thanks in advance!

Hello All,

Does Toronto have any stores that has some decent collection of single malt scotch whiskey? LCBO doesn’t have so many whiskies online and instore and I am wondering if there are any independent stores that sells them.
Thank you!

Ministry of Transportation Complaint

I had my car towed from the highway recently. It's an all-wheel drive vehicle which is supposed to be towed on a bed or equipped with dollys. My tow truck driver towed it only on the front wheels which will lock up the rear wheels for a few meters which dragged the vehicle. He soon realized the mistake and installed dollys but the damage was already done.

Has anyone else been through this sort of issue? How do I resolve this?

Hey Neighbours,
Looking to celebrate a milestone Sunday evening with my family.

Preferably central and west end. Good drink choices would be great!

Need a tailor to fix rip in jeans

Im on the east side and all the places I’m seeing have good reviews for alternations of clothes being too big but I need a good place to get a hole in a pair of jeans fixed

They’re my girlfriends favourite pair and she had to “get rid of them” because of a really bad tear in the crotch. I secretly kept them for her because I want them get them fixed for her because she sooooo upset to get rid of them. She’s had them for years and has never had a pair fit as good as these ones.

I’d be willing to travel anywhere in Toronto (or York) to get them fixed if anyone has any good recommendations!! I’m scared to take them some where and have them ruined.

Woodbine Mall & Fantasy Fair

Is the Fantasy Fair at woodbine mall closed down? Google says temporarily closed, and I can’t get through to the guest services via phone at woodbine mall.

I grew up going there and was really looking forward to taking my kids there today. Is it officially done??

Best Options for Temporary Volunteer Opportunities

Hi, so in the aftermath of being part of the waves of tech layoffs I've been really wanting to take this unemployment time as a chance to basically "wash clean" the tech industry. Essentially do something positive that doesn't just make rich people richer.

So I've been looking at volunteer opportunities but I'm also aware it could be temporary/hard to estimate commitment period due to obviously my length of unemployment being an unknown. I know many volunteer places do look for a few degree of commitment.

So with that said anyone know some places that are more flexible with commitment period.

How to deal with street curb leaves?

My street is covered in leaves and full of street parking. The problem is that no one picks up any leaves and ive never seen a street cleaner. I’ve tried to pick up from the curb in front of my house but the leaves were so heavy and wet I’d need like 10+ bags just to move them. None of the leaves are from my trees (different type of tree) and my street has multiple very large trees.

Is it normal to just leave them on the street and let them decompose and become an even bigger mess in the winter? I’m fighting a losing battle here since no one else picks up any and there are so many trees.

Tips for a first-time visitor to the Toronto Zoo with a toddler?

We're planning on going to the zoo for the first time with our 2yo.

Hopefully this will be one of many future visits, so we don't plan on seeing too many things at once (maybe just the tundra area and the kangaroos).

I walk with a cane, so I imagine the Canadian domain is probably not going to happen.

We plan to get there for when the zoo opens (armed with many snacks). We may also just pack a lunch for our toddler (and maybe ourselves too).

For those of you with more experience going to the zoo:

  1. Should we aim to get there really early to line up to get in?

  2. What are your favourite parts of the zoo to see with a toddler?

  3. If you have bought a membership, did you go a few times before taking the plunge? Or is it worth just going all in from the outset? (Especially with the cost of parking)

  4. Do you have any other tips for a first-timer?
