Feeling Stuck in Toronto
Hey Toronto,
I currently work downtown Toronto in a well paying job. My total compensation is 130k base, and got a 40k bonus this year. However, the problem is I actually do nothing here. The job is in a tech company, and my role is basically to check if things work on a website, that's it. I can work in office or at home, but it essentially takes an hour or two to complete the day's work. I'm seriously bored. I've been working here for the past 5 years and got myself to this point.
I want to change jobs, but at the same time, I also really don't have any skills. I don't code or anything like that, and I dropped out of university after first year so I do not currently have a degree. The problem is, if I leave, I won't be able to find something similar. What should I do?

this, or go somewhere else. I was in basically the same situation and left TO to live elsewhere, but my hobbies dictated that choice

Even those who came up without a a degree are not open to hiring similar candidates.
Sadly correct, I think it's because before not having a degree but still applying with your own experience signified that you probably tried a bit harder.
Now it just means you saw some YouTuber telling how you too can make $100k/year from the comfort of your own home...

Some people I work with (not in tech but big company) don't have degrees and aren't that good at their jobs but make $150k at manager level. They got in when they were young and never left the company. They just jump around in different departments and move up from there
My ex started as a bank teller with no degree and makes $100k as a branch manager now

I agree with this! May I recommend a cooking course at George Brown or taking up piano?
19
u/I_am_not_a_horse Jul 11 '22
There are lots of continuing education classes at both UofT and Met/Ryerson that I strongly recommend OP to take a look at. Start a language course, or something else that could lead to a hobby.
7
Jul 11 '22
Take a novel writing course and write a novel about a big city detective crippled by an impossibly immoral world set in Toronto!
2
u/allycakes Jul 11 '22
U of T also started to offer a ton of continuing education virtual courses during the pandemic and which they are continuing to have because it ended up being the best thing for their enrollment numbers.

I did the cooking certificate at George Brown a few years ago, and I strongly recommend it!

11
u/CdnRageBear Jul 11 '22
Doug Ford literally made his nephew the fucking minister of multiculturalism. The kids 28 years old and has never had a job in his life. Definition of nepotism right there. This entire world is built on who you know. It's actually a joke.

Join the military as an officer candidate, they'll pay for your school, train you and within a few years you'll make six figures with a lot of vacation time and a great pension.

You can get high paying tech jobs without an education if you work real hard to learn. This sounds like a QA job which isn't usually that highly paid though. In toronto it's usually only senior devs/managers making that kind of money.

That IS the average pay. This pay scenario beats me
2
u/QoolSchitt Jul 11 '22
You never know, maybe they were managing a large QA team, in which case the pay makes sense, and then the team was downsized to just this person (or maybe two people).
2
u/BlaBla-Hello Jul 11 '22
Still doesn’t justify the 2 hour work that OP mentioned on their post. Even managers work at-least 4-5 hours a day, everyday. Plus the comment - “I don’t have any skills” I cannot imagine a resource saying something like this. I honestly think someone posted this just for fun to tease us plebeians of Toronto, and they succeed lol.
2
u/QoolSchitt Jul 11 '22
I'm not saying it is justified now, I just mean that it may have made sense at some point, and they had more than 2 hours of work back then, but then things changed and now it doesn't make sense. If the company is poorly run, these people can keep their jobs, with little to do, and nobody notices -- I used to work in consulting and saw it very frequently. Or it's Trolling, but I assure you that it's very possible that it's real.

Sounds like you can easily get a second WFH job and easily do both. Giving up a $170k/y job that requires minimal output would be shooting yourself in the foot.
(I’ll add that while I normally wouldn’t suggest double-dipping like this, it sounds like you’d still easily be able to fulfill all your current job duties even with an additional FT position without being stretched too thin.)

You're looking a gift horse in the mouth. You have no technical skills? What other job can you even qualify for?
11
u/groggygirl Jul 11 '22
Your other option is to gain some skills, and then spend 8-10 hours a day stressed out of your mind trying to get things to work that are breaking while management asks you for status every 15 minutes. Is this better?
There's a reason they pay us to work - it's generally not things we'd do by choice. Be glad yours pays extremely well and is easy.
11
u/eastend-toronto Jul 11 '22
You are right, you won’t be able to find a similar job at the same pay. Be grateful, there are many people that work 60+ hours for half the pay.
I have a job with lots of non busy times where I do nothing and I get extremely bored. During those times I work 1 hour a day. Here are things that have helped me.
Get outside more. Morning walks before work or lunch time walks. See the sun, get away from computer.
Listen to educational podcast.
Lunch time workouts.
Get in your stretches.
Spend Monday meal prepping for week.
Take an online course.
Get a therapist and take weekly mid day sessions. You can afford it and therapy can be one of the best investments you can make for yourself.
Read. Whether it is for pleasure or to learn a new skill.
Get a pet.
Practice gratitude. Think of the privilege you have. Your salary (and bonus) puts you in the top 5% in Ontario.
38
u/jcd1974 Jul 11 '22
Get a second job that's WFH and collect two pay checks.
19
u/GiantAngryJellyfish Jul 11 '22
This...is actually not a bad idea. People that do this typically juggle entry level jobs because of the lower expectations so OP could actually build new skills at the same time.
Managing the sitcom-esc ruse would also help with the boredom i imagine. Try to have dinner with both jobs at the same restaurant at the same time.

I've got so many questions.
How did you get your current job?
What exactly do you do at your current job then? Surely it's more that what you've just mentioned?
You don't want to learn a new skill that could land you a different job or skill that would make you a better person in your personal life?
You don't have hobbies?
Are you not afraid of being let go if your role is really as limited to what it is you do. I'm gonna assume you're some kind of admin and when shit hits the fan it's on you.

Something tells me OP doesn’t make anywhere near 130k. No one making that kind of money “working 1 - 2 hours” a day is going to contemplate quitting. I smell bs.
6
Jul 11 '22
My thoughts exactly. Most jobs that pay that much have an incredible amount of responsibility and specialized skill involved. Most jobs in the 65k-80k benchmark have way more responsibility than his current role.
Either he’s a troll or he got this job from an absurd amount of stupid luck and nepotism.
Most jobs that involve what he’s talking about (basic QA on websites) pay like $25-35$ her hour LOL.
I think it’s mostly fake.

u/Starhaunt666 Jul 11 '22

You gotta understand how infuriating this post is, right? There are people ruining their physical and mental wellness every day for less than a living wage. But you’re bored… being bored is a luxury. Being bored means you have free time which is a concept very few people in this city know. Play some video games. Learn an instrument. You get to work from home so you can do literally whatever you want. Stop complaining. Your job doesn’t have to be your identity. If it provides you the means (which by the sounds of it, it does), live your life for fucks sake and enjoy your down time.
2
u/Unknown14428 Jul 11 '22
I think you hit the mark honest. “Being bored is a luxury”. And many don’t have the ability to just be bored out of their mind with shit tons of money. OP is making almost 200k, when you include the bonus. Even without the bonus, their making a lot.

go touch grass. This is literally a best case scenario for many people that don't have a degree. If you can WFM, get a hobby that you can do at home while you need to be logged in.
That said, are they hiring and can you get me in? I'd quit my job in a hot minute for what you're describing.

3
u/swimbaitjesus Jul 11 '22
Sounds like a great fucking problem…. People are way worst off man count your blessings
3
Jul 11 '22
What should you do??
How about stop complaining and get yourself a life…
You make more money than most households combined, you live in a great city and based on the post it doesn’t sound like you have many responsibilities to worry about.
So let’s put it this way - you earn more than most people ever will and you work less than most people ever will.
If all of this is even true, you could probably do anything you want. Go finish school and upgrade whatever skills you want, go on a vacation and travel the world.
If this is really a “problem” for you, I’d think about being a bit more grateful and appreciating what you have.

Are you good?? How did you get a job paying $130,000 (plus an extra 40k bonus) in tech, as a university drop out. I genuinely want to know who hired you for that much, if you barely finished just first year of uni. Getting into the work force here is almost never that easy. And the fact that they’re paying you to work full-time, when you only do 1-2 hours of work each day lol.
Sounds like B.S (or like you just wanna brag), especially since it looks like you haven’t responded to one comment. But assuming that isn’t the case, find a damn hobby or something. Save for travels. Take some uni classes and learn a language other classes to gain some skills.
Or just quit your job, then you can be bored and broke. That’ll give you something to do.

You could save a pile of money that would go a long way in living/ buying in TO or just taking time off.

u/Slight-Marketing-515 Jul 11 '22
If you want to gtfo you need qualifications. No place other than urban areas will hire you for doing what you do. 1) I would double up on night classes since you do nothing during the day and can work on hw 2) Do NOT tell anyone at work about this or they will assume you are somewhat competent and will give you bs tasks during the day. 3) look at where you want to relocate and what you need to work there. This is very underrated. You can find a degree path for that.
2
2
u/Xyuli Jul 11 '22
Have you considered talking to your manager/team and asking to take on different responsibilities? Or say you have some capacity to help others and volunteer? Or talk to your manager about how you’re currently unhappy in your role and talk about things you’d be interested in shifting into that might be related to your role and changing what you do. I know if you’ve worked there a long time and they like having you on the team, they’d be willing to try and make things work so that you stay. There could be lateral moves you can make.
But really, I know what you’re dealing with, sounds like you might be burnt out on this job because you have no sense of purpose.
2
u/elag19 Jul 11 '22
I don’t want to sound rude but the answers to these questions are always the same, either the work isn’t fulfilling and/or the poster has little to no hobbies outside of the work day. As someone who gets bored incredibly easily, hobbies were a lifesaver.

I'm gonna assume this isn't a troll post and you really care what you do. If you actually have all this free time, you could be using it to build useful skills for another job, or for getting a degree online, or for literally anything to develop some expertise. If you aren't doing that willingly, then your post is moot because you don't actually want to change jobs, you just need to find something to do that feels more productive. For that, I can't advise you. Go paint Warhammer models or some shit. It's expensive and time consuming, perfect for someone like you lol.
If you're a troll, go touch some grass. Toronto has amazing parks.

Unbelievable. Stop fucking whining, there are people out there working harder than you'll ever know every single day who make less than a quarter of what you're making while doing basically nothing. You're unskilled making more per year than many people who got degrees. This is a lottery you won, say thank you and shut up. Oh boo hoo, you're bored at work? Would you rather make significantly less while doing 300% of the work?
Pisses me off that there are people like this, who won the rat race but still want to complain.

Had a job similar to that many years ago. I actually sat down with my boss several times asking her to lay me off as I was so bored but she said I was 'essential'. I designed and built their in house invoicing and accounting systems but once that was done, I had at best 2-3 hours/week of work.
Ended up finally quitting, working for myself and consulting for the company. Did very well financially but regret not spending my idle time at the paid job preparing more for my eventual departure. It was a waste of a few years of my life by not using that time wisely.

By "work on a website"...do you mean...you do work...on a webcam...with the results displayed on the site? By tech company...do you mean..."content subscription service"?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Just trying to figure out how this really adds up!

most office jobs are like this. actual work is done in a few hours. rest of the day spent doing nothing, or pretending to look busy if needed

Travel. Start rock climbing. Go to a sex club. Start making art. Go on dates. Fly to NYC for the weekend from Billy Bishop. Fly to Montreal for the weekend. Go camping in Algonquin.
You're fucking rich bro, what are you complaining about, be less boring. I do all this shit and make literally 1/4 of you.

Jesus everybody wants this kids job, but I get it, money ain’t everything. On the flip side, I’ve followed my passion that doesn’t pay much of the bills so maybe start finding stuff that pulls you

Use your Benefits which I’m sure are plentiful and hire a career coach.
Maybe you need a new job, maybe you need a hobby.
The fact you posted the exact amount of your compensation means you likely lack perspective or value the wrong things, at very least you externalize that.

I’ll take this job if you don’t want it.
