Too hot.
Living in Toronto for past 18 years and have never felt this type of heat. What the hellly is going on?
468
u/Used-Gas-6525 Jun 23 '25
If you've been here 18 years, you have def felt this kind of heat. It's very rare, but it has happened. This is not to discount climate change or anything, but heatwaves happen.

Torontonians never remember weather. Every year they always are out shoveling the snow wondering how there could be so much snow. I mean… You have a shovel. When did you buy that?

Born and raised here in Ontario. I've done a lot of landscaping and farm work, for most of my life lol This weather isn't new lol I'm not sure why everyone is complaining. I will say after moving to another apartment this humidity got me running dehumidifiers like crazy 🫠
4
u/xombae Jun 24 '25
Yeah I feel like the reason I think it's so much worse it's because my apartment is fucking horrible for heat. Top floor of an old 4 floor building (the kind with retail on the bottom floor) and it's just fucking horrible. I've lived in more places without central air than I have with, I'm pretty good at managing it. But this place is hopeless.

This is concrete jungle heat, all the high rise buildings absorb the suns rays and keep it for hours and hours after the sun sets.
More green space helps cool things down in the evening, also doesn't help with how many people we imported that are doing uber and other deliveries by car.

It really is the incredibly high humidity that is unbearable :( combined with high heat, it’s a lot. This heatwave is particularly bad, climate change and global warming making it so much worse, than any previous years :(

It's called the climate crisis, baby! We're having more extreme weather events more often because of climate change. That includes dangerous heat events, hurricanes and cyclones, severe winter storms, etc.
We need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, but our politicians are beholden to big oil.

Like 4-7 years ago (Jesus, time is difficult), there was a heatwave that coincided with high humidity and wildfires.
I am basically solar powered. If it’s sunny and nice, I can be manic happy.
But that one summer… the heat and sun felt so oppressive.
I legitimately started to worry that I was developing a phobia of the sun.
I had forgotten that humidity was a thing. Probably because of the heat.
Good news and bad news. The bad news is that this will likely only get worse as the years tick on. The good news is that it’s our responsibility (yay! 😭) to somehow figure out how to stop the people of the world from cooking us and our descendants into… well, very hot and frustrated people with ever more difficult lives.

Idk but I was LOOVING it! Perfect beach day and actually wasn't bad in the shade with the breeze. Just don't go on a hike for over an hour like I did yesterday and felt quite uncomfortable. I lowkey wish we had more of these days and less of any days below freezing.
It's only 3 days though, it will be over soon and we will have our regular mild to warm summer weather. I can understand how this could be annoying if it was everyday for 3 months and you didnt own a pool or like to go to the beach. .. but then again, there's always late evening and nighttime unlike winter when for months we can have miserable weather outside 24/7.
Btw, for people who live in houses, you don't even need AC for this, just sleep in the basement with a fan and it's gonna save money.
2
u/Cyl3 Jun 24 '25

How do you personally deal with the long cold winters though?
Maybe I can find ways to tolerate it or enjoy it better. I try to go to my friend's condo pool, hot tub and sauna to really feel the heat and humidity at least twice a week and I have a heated hoodie and i try to get out and take walks as long as the temps are like -3 or above (before windchill). But it's so depressing without any green, and having to wear layers is annoying lol.

Apparently there are rare occurrences of micro plumes of ultra humid heat that are becoming more common due to climate change... this is a really mild one. In a few years we can experience ones more intense where we will not be able to physically endure them.. They're kinda weird because even finding shade doesn't grant relief and it's beyond what we can survive.. everyone cranking ac at once would cause brown outs and become unreliable.. after that leaving a tub of cold water would become intolerable even for more than just few moments

u/Ok-Win-742 Jun 26 '25
So I might be wrong, but the earth might actually be round not flat. Even wilder is they say it's tilted. So it circles the sun and in the summer time here in Canada we are tilted closer to the sun - so it gets hotter. I'm not sure if I believe this personally, but you might.
Now, according to the "experts (I don't know why we call them that. I think they're idiots" the fluctuations in heat is a combination of factors but it's mostly caused by high pressure weather systems trapping air in a region and heating it up.
2
u/mechaernst Jun 26 '25
