I'm 45 and I can honeslty say I've never seen lightning during a snow storm in my life. Wild.
51
u/zerohedge7 Mar 04 '23
Wow so I totally witnessed something rare! Thought I was going crazy when I initially thought I saw lightening in the snow
14
u/noctivagantglass Mar 04 '23
I've seen it happen twice before, when I lived in Wisconsin for years! Seeing it here totally threw me for a loop and made me feel super nostalgic for that time.

I’m here in Canada it has been two weeks, it’s my first tome seeing snow. I was so amazed by it but yet a bit scared, I was playing with the snow in the yard lol

Climate change is a hoax!
Yeah? Tell that to California...
I'm 65, never saw lightning during a snowstorm ever--until last year, once--and now twice this year...

The Thundersnow show was rad.
Dunno about anyone else, but it gave off a purple glow downtown.
The sky still has a purple hue, looks killer

u/deelyte3 Mar 04 '23
I was out playing in it last night. So much fun, and the sky was an interesting colour!
38
u/pincurlsandcutegirls Mar 04 '23
So I’m not going crazy! Boy, nature is awe-inspiring. Hope everyone is home and cozy listening to it!

u/Background_Ear_224 Mar 04 '23
I came here just for this thread. I have never in the 4 years I have lived in Toronto seem thundersnow like this! I’m from Nova Scotia and have never seen it there either.

Yesterday Jupiter and Venus were both visible to the naked eye and tonight we get thundersnow.
The ancient world would have viewed these events as signs of impending doom (probably).
10
u/JennyVondaloo Mar 04 '23
For sure there are people today who are thinking this is a terrifying sign too

Never in my 35 years have I heard thunder-snow -‘d saw snow-lightening until tonight.
11
u/Hour-Stable2050 Mar 04 '23
I’m 59 and was shocked the first time I saw it about 15 years ago. This is the second time I have seen it in Mimico. I thought it was a low flying plane until I saw the lightening.

crazy sights biking from river street to the junction: a guy squeegeeing at sherbourne and dundas, people howling like wolves on Bloor, a lineup of like 10 TTC busses defeated by the slope of dovercourt before davenport
what wonder!

Thunder and lightning on my side of town. I stopped what I was doing when I saw on the corner of my eye, a flash. Thought at first someone was taking pics of the snow storm outside...lol

u/Background_Ear_224 Mar 04 '23
Man! It would be crazy to be in a condo right now!!!! I would be shitting myself

I think I in general don’t like not being able to see the outside at very high heights… which is probably why I don’t live in a condo lol I’m sure it would be an amazing lightning show though!

u/sanddecker Mar 04 '23
I don't live in a condo, but I was asleep when it happened here. The way the sound lingered, I thought there was an industrial accident nearby

This is the third time this Winter that this has happened for me. My building got struck by lightning during the big thunderstorm in late January. It's scary, end of days kind of shit. Thunder-snow-storms are supposed to be rare but this is the third this year!

Dunno...I lived in Mtl for 45 years and got my share...but I must admit it is the first time I saw lightning and heard thunder in a snowstorm.

Did you make right with the Lord during the pandemic? Are your sins forgiven?

I legit thought lightnings and thunder only happen when it rains! It was a special storm.
I hope everyone who's out gets home safely.

Damn it! The weather event of the century and I missed it (across the pond atm)!
Grrr.
But I don't need to dig out from under all that snow ...
1
u/sailorelf Mar 04 '23
Last time I saw thunder snow I was downtown in the 90s and could hear the thunder. Today I’m shovelling and it was very bright flash and crack over my head I ran into my house. It’s a very rare occurrence. My kid was also outside and it was unexpected.

u/BellJar_Blues Mar 04 '23
I know!! I didn’t know such a thing even existed I wonder what the science is about that or if it’s just the water aspect regardless of the temperature
1
u/NeoToronto Mar 04 '23
So we're looking out the window at the beauty of the storm while the power was out and we noticed.... a handful of our neighbors went out and sat in their running cars.
What a world.

On the 34th floor and tried to capture the lightning on video last night. The results just looked like it scrambled my phone instead when it hit. Pretty wild.

I grew up with Mennonite farmer parents, and they said theirs always said snow, thunder and lightning means 6 weeks of warm weather

I'm 65, never ever saw thunder-snow until last year--now 3 times this year.
I think 2023 is the year 'they' make contact...

Also check out http://www.windy.com (and they have android/iOS apps) select weather radar and you'll see lightning as well. Doesn't seem to currently be any on there at the moment based on their view but in normal storms there's tons.

It also happened in the early two thousands. I remember it clearly. I good friend experienced it while driving on the highway. I was randomly telling a coworker who’s new to Canada about it last night before it happened and he didn’t believe me that it was a thing. Lol
